USS Zara (SP-133) was a steam yacht that was built in Scotland in 1890, passed through a number of British, Canadian and US owners, and ended up as a passenger steamship in Greece after the First World War. She was renamed several times, becoming Solgar, Electra and finally Zoodohos Pigi. In the latter part of the war she spent a year as an armed yacht in the United States Navy.
Fleming and Ferguson built Zara at Paisley, Scotland, launching her on 3 June 1891. Her registered length was 152.0 ft (46.3 m), her beam was 21.1 ft (6.4 m) and her draft was 11 ft 7 in (3.53 m). Her tonnages were 195 GRT, 81 NRT and 247 Thames Measurement. Her first owner was a Peter Coats, who registered her in Glasgow. [1]
At an unknown date one A Edward Tower had acquired Zara and registered her in New York City. By 1902 he had passed her on to an HB Moore, who kept her registered in New York City. By 1910 her owner was a GP Grant in Canada. In 1914 a William W Near acquired the yacht, renamed her Solgar, and registered her in Toronto. [1]
By 1917 Solgar belonged to a David H Friedman of New York City. On 27 April 1917 the US Navy acquired her from Friedman, changed her name back to Zara, and commissioned her with the pennant number SP-133 at New York City on 22 May 1917.
Assigned to the section patrol in the 3rd Naval District, Zara cruised the waters of Long Island Sound for almost a year. She was decommissioned on 13 April 1918 and offered for sale.
Though her name was struck from the Navy Directory on 1 May 1918, the Navy retained Zara as guard vessel at Whitestone, Queens, New York, near the western entrance to Long Island Sound.
Zara was sold on 13 September 1919 to Atmoploia Stauroudi of Greece, who converted her into a passenger ship. [1]
USS Winchester (SP-156) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919. Prior to and following World War I, Winchester was a private yacht, later renamed Renard. In World War II, Renard was requisitioned for use in the Royal Canadian Navy as a patrol vessel, keeping her name. She was returned to her owners in 1944.
USS Kanawha II (SP-130), later called USS Piqua (SP-130), was a steam yacht that was built in 1899, and which the United States Navy used as an armed yacht in the First World War. She was commissioned in 1917 as Kanawha II, with the "II" added probably to distinguish her from the oiler USS Kanawha (AO-1). She was renamed Piqua in 1918, probably for the same reason.
USS Sultana (SP-134) was a steam yacht acquired under a free lease by the United States Navy in World War I. She was outfitted as a patrol boat and was assigned to escort duty in the North Atlantic Ocean. She rescued survivors adrift in the water, and protected cargo ships from U-boat attack, and was returned to her owner at the close of the war.
USS Christabel (SP-162) was a civilian steam yacht that was built in Glasgow in 1893 for a Scottish industrialist. She had an American owner by 1910, served as a United States Navy patrol ship in the latter part of the First World War, and afterward was returned to US civilian service.
USS Emeline (SP-175) was a steam yacht acquired by the United States Navy in World War I. She was outfitted with military equipment, including 3-inch guns, and was commissioned as a patrol craft, assigned to protect shipping in the North Atlantic Ocean. She saved the lives of survivors of shipwrecks, and provided escort protection from German submarines for commercial ships. Post-war she was sold to the highest bidder, who had the yacht sail to San Diego, California, for delivery.
USS Corona (SP-813) was a steel-hulled steam yacht that was launched in Scotland in 1905 as Corona. In 1917 the United States Navy had her converted into an armed yacht. She was based in France until 1918, and then in reserve in Connecticut. In 1921 she was sold back into civilian use. In 1928 she was re-registered in Peru, where she became a merchant ship. She sank off the Peruvian coast in 1941.
USS Halcyon II (SP-582) was a yacht acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War I. She was outfitted as an armed patrol craft and stationed in Boston harbor in Massachusetts. She spent much of the war patrolling the Massachusetts waterways for German submarines and, in 1919, was decommissioned after being damaged in a collision.
USS Helenita (SP-210) was a yacht leased from its owner by the U.S. Navy during World War I. She was outfitted as an armed patrol craft and initially assigned to North Atlantic Ocean duty, but found to be too lightly built for the ocean. She was then relegated to patrol of Long Island Sound and the Delaware Bay until war's end, when her guns were removed and she was returned to her owner.
USS Zoraya (SP-235) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy from 1917 to 1919.
USS Gem (SP-41) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919.
USS Joyance (SP-72) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919.

The third USS Mohican (SP-117), later USS SP-117, was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919.
Aphrodite was a steam yacht that was launched in 1898. When completed in 1899 she was the largest steam yacht yet built in the US. In 1917 she was commissioned into the United States Navy as the patrol vessel USS Aphrodite (SP-135). She was based in France from 1917 to 1918; in England from 1918 to 1919; and then returned to her private owner.
The second USS Sovereign (SP-170) was an armed yacht that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1918 to 1919.
USS Hopestill (SP-191) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919.
The first USS Sabalo (SP-225) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1919. Following World War I, Sabalo was sold to private interests before returning to service as a patrol vessel in World War II, this time with the Royal Canadian Navy, renamed Cougar. Returning to private ownership following the war, the vessel sank in a hurricane in 1950.
