Ulrike Felt (born 1957) [1] is an Austrian social scientist,active in the field of Science and Technology Studies. Currently,she holds the chair for Social Studies of Science and is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. [2] She also acted as the president of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST). [3] From 2002 to 2007,she has been editor-in-chief of the journal "Science,Technology,&Human Values".
Trained as a physicist,she acquired her PhD in Physics at the University of Vienna in 1983. [4] [5] From 1983 until 1988,she was part of a research team investigating the history of the European High Energy Physics Lab (CERN) in Genève. Subsequently,she was part of the Department for the Philosophy and Social Studies of Science at the University of Vienna,which had been newly founded under the lead of Helga Nowotny,becoming an assistant professor in 1989. Since 1999,she is full Professor of Social Studies of Science. From 2004 to 2014,she was Head of the newly founded Department of Science and Technology Studies. [5] She has held guest professorships at the Universitédu Québec àMontréal,the UniversitéLouis Pasteur,Strasbourg,the ETH Zurich and visiting scholar at the STS group at Harvard. She has been part of numerous international professional committees and held many scientific advisory posts,among them being a member of the expert advisory group "Science and Society" for the European Unions 6th Framework Program,and has been co-director of the EC DG Research expert group on "Science and Governance",from 2005 to 2007. She was the leading founder of the interdisciplinary Master program "Science - Technology - Society",which has been set up at the University of Vienna in 2009. She has been editor of the leading STS journal "Science,Technology,&Human Values" (SAGE) from 2002-2007 and has been the leading editor of the new Handbook of Science and Technology Studies (MIT Press,2017). Since 2014 she is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. [6] [7]
Ulrike Felt has published widely in different areas of Science,Technology,and Society. Throughout her work,questions of the public engagement with science and of science policy have been a major concern for Felt. Her work on public perception of different technologies,the organisation and reflection of different participatory events as well as on the complex relations of science and democracy has contributed in many innovative ways to the debates in STS and beyond.
An important line of her work has focused on changing modes of knowledge production within the sciences,and on how this impacts ways of working and living within research cultures. She has introduced the concept of "epistemic living spaces" [8] in order to describe how the social and epistemic are co-produced within scientific work spaces:
"By epistemic living space,we mean researchers' individual or collective perceptions and narrative re-constructions of the structures,contexts,rationales,actors and values which mould,guide and delimit their potential actions,both in what they aim to know as well as in how they act in social contexts in science and beyond." (Felt/Fochler 2010:4f) [9]
Using this concept,she has pointed to the potential implications of recent changes within career structures and the organization of the sciences for the knowledge produced within contemporary societies,focusing recently on changing temporal orders of research practices and policy.
Another line of her work has focused on how science and technology are embedded within local and national contexts. By introducing the notion of "technopolitical cultures" (Felt et al. 2010), [10] Felt has pointed to the nationally distinct ways of how technoscience is entangled with cultural norms and values. Further,she is interested in how novel technologies like nano or genetic testing become imagined and integrated within specific local contexts. These questions are closely tied to her methodological interests. Felt and the Department of Social Studies of Science have engaged not only in the development of novel qualitative social science methods,but also in reflecting the performativity and politics of both participatory engagements and traditional socio-scientific methods.
More recently,and lying across her different research interests,she has been engaging with the role of changing temporal structures and the growing importance of future in shaping the interface of science,technology and society.
Finally,since late 2015 she is leading a new interfaculty research platform at the University of Vienna "Responsible Research and Innovation in Academic Practice". [11]
Science studies is an interdisciplinary research area that seeks to situate scientific expertise in broad social,historical,and philosophical contexts. It uses various methods to analyze the production,representation and reception of scientific knowledge and its epistemic and semiotic role.
Science and technology studies (STS) or science,technology,and society is an interdisciplinary field that examines the creation,development,and consequences of science and technology in their historical,cultural,and social contexts.
Public awareness of science (PAwS) is everything relating to the awareness,attitudes,behaviors,opinions,and activities that comprise the relations between the general public or lay society as a whole to scientific knowledge and organization. This concept is also known as public understanding of science (PUS),or more recently,public engagement with science and technology (PEST). It is a comparatively new approach to the task of exploring the multitude of relations and linkages science,technology,and innovation have among the general public. While early work in the discipline focused on increasing or augmenting the public's knowledge of scientific topics,in line with the information deficit model of science communication,the deficit model has largely been abandoned by science communication researchers. Instead,there is an increasing emphasis on understanding how the public chooses to use scientific knowledge and on the development of interfaces to mediate between expert and lay understandings of an issue. Newer frameworks of communicating science include the dialogue and the participation models. The dialogue model aims to create spaces for conversations between scientists and non-scientists to occur while the participation model aims to include non-scientists in the process of science.
Karin Knorr Cetina is an Austrian sociologist well known for her work on epistemology and social constructionism,summarized in the books The Manufacture of Knowledge:An Essay on the Constructivist and Contextual Nature of Science (1981) and Epistemic Cultures:How the Sciences Make Knowledge (1999). Currently,she focuses on the study of global microstructures and Social studies of finance. Knorr Cetina is the Otto Borchert Distinguished Service Professor and chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago.
Helga Nowotny is Professor emeritus of Social Studies of Science,ETH Zurich. She has held numerous leadership roles on Academic boards and public policy councils,and she has authored many publications in the social studies of science and technology.
A knowledge productionmode is a term from the sociology of science which refers to the way (scientific) knowledge is produced. So far,three modes have been conceptualized. Mode 1 production of knowledge is knowledge production motivated by scientific knowledge alone which is not primarily concerned by the applicability of its findings. Mode 1 is founded on a conceptualization of science as separated into discrete disciplines. Mode 2 was coined in 1994 in juxtaposition to Mode 1 by Michael Gibbons,Camille Limoges,Helga Nowotny,Simon Schwartzman,Peter Scott and Martin Trow. In Mode 2,multidisciplinary teams are brought together for short periods of time to work on specific problems in the real world for knowledge production in the knowledge society. Mode 2 can be explained by the way research funds are distributed among scientists and how scientists focus on obtaining these funds in terms of five basic features:knowledge produced in the context of application;transdisciplinarity;heterogeneity and organizational diversity;social accountability and reflexivity;and quality control. Subsequently,Carayannis and Campbell described a Mode 3 knowledge in 2006.

The Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) is a non-profit scholarly association devoted to the social studies of science and technology (STS). It was founded in 1975 and as of 2008 its international membership exceeds 1,200. In 2016,over 2,000 people attended the society's annual meeting in Barcelona,co-hosted by the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST). Its 40th anniversary celebration at Cornell University was attended by notable STS scholars such as Trevor Pinch,Sheila Jasanoff,and Bruno Latour.

Sonia Livingstone is a leading British scholar on the subjects of children,media and the Internet. She is Professor of Social Psychology and former head of the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science. While Livingstone’s research has evolved since the start of her career in the 1980s,her recent work explores media and communication in relation to society,children and technology. Livingstone has authored or edited twenty-four books and hundreds of academic articles and chapters. She is known for her continued public engagement about her research areas and has advised the UK government,European Commission,European Parliament,UN Committee on the Rights of the Child,OECD,ITU and UNICEF,among others,on children’s internet safety and rights in the digital environment. In 2014,Livingstone was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) "for services to children and child Internet safety".
Anton Pelinka is a professor of political science and nationalism studies at the English-speaking Central European University of Budapest. Prior to this appointment,Pelinka was a professor of political science at the University of Innsbruck,one of Austria's largest universities. During his career he has also served as a dean,with his most recent tenure in this role occurring between the years of 2004 and 2006 when he was dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Innsbruck.
Ulrike Beate Guérot is a Berlin-based German political thinker and Founder and Director of the European Democracy Lab (EDL). In April 2016,the University for Continuing Education Krems appointed Ulrike Guérot as Professor for European Policy and the Study of Democracy. She was the head of the Department for European Policy and the Study of Democracy. From 2021 until March 2023,she held the professorship for European Politics at the University of Bonn.

Johannes Willem "Johan" Schot is a Dutch historian working in the field of science and technology policy. A historian of technology and an expert in sustainability transitions,Johan Schot is Professor of Global Comparative History at the Centre for Global Challenges,Utrecht University. He is the Academic Director of the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) and former Director of the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex. He was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2009. He is the Principal Investigator of the Deep Transitions Lab.
Viola Vogel,also known as Viola Vogel-Scheidemann,is a German biophysicist and bioengineer. She is a professor at ETH Zürich,where she is head of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology and leads the Applied Mechanobiology Laboratory.
The quadruple and quintuple innovation helix framework describes university-industry-government-public-environment interactions within a knowledge economy. In innovation helix framework theory,first developed by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff and used in innovation economics and theories of knowledge,such as the knowledge society and the knowledge economy,each sector is represented by a circle (helix),with overlapping showing interactions. The quadruple and quintuple innovation helix framework was co-developed by Elias G. Carayannis and David F.J. Campbell,with the quadruple helix being described in 2009 and the quintuple helix in 2010. Various authors were exploring the concept of a quadruple helix extension to the triple helix model of innovation around the same time. The Carayannis and Campbell quadruple helix model incorporates the public via the concept of a 'media-based democracy',which emphasizes that when the political system (government) is developing innovation policy to develop the economy,it must adequately communicate its innovation policy with the public and civil society via the media to obtain public support for new strategies or policies. In the case of industry involved in R&D,the framework emphasizes that companies' public relations strategies have to negotiate ‘reality construction’by the media. The quadruple and quintuple helix framework can be described in terms of the models of knowledge that it extends and by five subsystems (helices) that it incorporates;in a quintuple helix-driven model,knowledge and know-how are created and transformed,and circulate as inputs and outputs in a way that affects the natural environment. Socio-ecological interactions via the quadruple and quintuple helices can be utilized to define opportunities for the knowledge society and knowledge economy,such as innovation to address sustainable development,including climate change.
