Umaru Pate (born 1964) is a Nigerian professor of media history and an academic. [1]

He is the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, Gombe State [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] and the former Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Bayero University Kano, [7] the president of Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), a member of UNESCO Network of Communication Professors.

Early life and education

Umar Pate was born on 4 January 1964 at the District Head's Palace, Song Local Government of Adamawa Emirate, Nigeria. [8] He had his Primary School Leaving Certificate at Nassarao Jeleng LEA Primary School in 1976. He then proceeded to Government College Maiduguri where he emerged as the overall best graduating student of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), GCE O' Level in Arts department in 1981. [9]

Afterwards, he attended college of preliminary studies, Yola, in 1982 for an Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) that qualified him for a direct admission into 200 level in 1984. Pate graduated with a degree in Mass communication in 1987 and then bagged Master of Philosophy University of Ghana, Legon and Phd at University of Maiduguri in 1990 and 1997 respectively. [1]  

Career

Umar Pate started his career at the department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri in 1988, he became an associate professor in 2002. He was appointed a Professor of Mass Communication and Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Bayero University Kano in 2007. [8] [10]

On 20 October 2007, Pate became Professor of Media and Society. [11] [12]

International appointment

In November 2017, Pate was appointed by UNESCO in Paris as a director representing Africa on the Six persons Board of Directors of the prestigious International Network of UNESCO Professors in Communication (ORBICOM) that has its headquarters at University of Quebec at Montreal, Canada. [1]

Recognitions/awards

He has served as a consultant for several organization both locally and intentionally such as USAID, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNESCO, World Bank, Ford Foundation etc. [13]

Not neglecting his tradition and culture, professor Pate is also the Kaigama of Adamawa state which translates to the chief of defense of staff and also one of the 11 Kingmakers of the state. [14] He has over 66 national and international publications in different part of the world. [15] [16]

Some of the awards The VC of FUK, Umar Pate got was the "Award of excellence for service to humanity" by the National Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ). [17] [18]

Adamawa State Polytechnic is a tertiary educational institution in Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. It was established in 1991 through a merger of the College of Preliminary Studies Yola and the Staff Development Institute, Numan. The new polytechnic provides national diploma programs in computer science, statistics, accountancy, business studies and secretarial studies. The polytechnic, run by the State government, is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education. The institution has become affiliated with the University of Maiduguri for the purpose of running degree programmes.

Modibbo Adama University, Yola is a public research university in Girei, a town in Adamawa State, Northeastern Nigeria. It is one of the four federal technology universities established with the sole purpose of advancing science-based research. The university is accredited by the National Universities Commission. The university offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees. The Vice Chancellor is Abdullahi Liman Tukur.

Alhassan Mohammed Gani is a Nigerian academic and administrator who is the former vice-chancellor of Federal University Kashere, in Gombe state.

Sunusi Mamman was the vice chancellor of Umaru Musa Yar'adua University from 2017 to December 15, 2022. His appointment as the university's substantive vice chancellor came after the tenure of Professor Idris Isa Funtua expired. Professor Sunusi Mamman was once the acting vice chancellor of the university from February to June 2015 and the deputy vice chancellor (administration) of the university from 2014 to 2016. A professor of special needs education with special interest in cognitive exceptionalities. His reign as acting vice chancellor was characterised by massive structural development which gave rise to the utilisation of the 2013 Needs Assessment funds of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (tetfund) that financed for the constructions of additional male and female hostels, Post Graduate Students Hostel and other developmental structures. He also introduced several constructions in all the five faculties of the university. He sponsored academic and non-teaching staff to pursue higher degrees in many universities at home and abroad thereby boosting the workforce in the university.

Ibrahim Adamu Kolo was a Nigerian academic. He lived in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

Abubakar Kundiri is a professor of soil science. He is the former vice chancellor of Federal University Dutse and Federal University Wukari, Taraba State, in Nigeria.

The Federal University of Kashere, also known as FUKashere, is a public conventional university situated in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. Kaletapwa George Farauta is a Nigerian professor and politician, who is the current deputy governor of Adamawa State since 2023. She was the vice chancellor of Adamawa State University, Mubi from 2017 to 2022. She is a former Adamawa State commissioner of education and executive chairman of Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board.

Haruna Kuje Ayuba is a Nigerian professor of environmental science and the current Vice Chancellor of Bingham University.

Mala Mohammed Daura is a Nigerian academic and administrator. He has been the Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University, Damaturu since January 1, 2020, following his appointment by the Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni. He is the fourth Vice Chancellor of the university.
