Synopsis:

A story of friendship, love and the brutal training of 14 Japan Coast Guard officers becoming rescuer divers. The rescuer divers, on the front line in rescue activities in heavy seas and always one step away from death, are a group of specialists in a profession that only 1% of all Coast Guard officers qualify for. In order to receive that qualification they have to undergo 50 days of grueling training in rescue activities. The young Coast Guard officers, including Daisuke Senzaki, take on the challenge of that hellish training. The story concentrates on the lives of the divers after having passed their examination.

Umizaru (海猿) is a 2004 Japanese action drama film directed by Eiichiro Hasumi. It is the first feature-length film of the Umizaru projects, preceding the 2005 11-episode Fuji Television and Kyodo Television drama series Umizaru Evolution and followed by the 2006 film Limit of Love: Umizaru. The film is the first of the three-part film and television project. The project is adapted from the popular 12 Shogakukan manga books Umizaru written by Yōichi Komori (小森陽一) and illustrated by Shūhō Satō from 1998 to 2001. The film stars Hideaki Itō as Japan Coast Guard (JCG) rescue diver Senzaki Daisuke, and Kato Ai as his love interest Izawa Kanna.

Daisuke Satō was a Japanese board game designer, novelist, and manga writer. He was known for his alternate history novels Seito and Red Sun Black Cross, among others. He wrote the story for his manga Imperial Guards and Highschool of the Dead. Imperial Guards was nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2007 and for the first Manga Taishō in 2008. He died on March 22, 2017, from ischaemic heart disease. After Daisuke's death, the decision was made to leave Highschool of the Dead unfinished.
