The United States Post Office is a historic building located in downtown Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. Built in 1914, the structure was designed in the Neoclassical style, with Oscar Wenderoth as the supervising architect. The 1893 Colombian Exposition in Chicago was a major influence in the building's design. [2] The foundation is composed of North Carolina granite, while the walls are dark red brick that is laid in an English cross bond. The main entrance is framed by a portico that is held up by four columns of the Doric order. The interior features woodwork of white oak, a marble-terrazo floor, and a vaulted ceiling. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. [1]

The Old Post Office is a Beaux Arts-style building in downtown Iowa City, Iowa, United States. Built of Indiana Limestone in 1904, the post office was expanded in 1931. The addition was designed and built in such a way that it is indistinguishable from the original structure. It remained the city's central post office until 1975, when a new facility was built. After two years of vacancy, it was bought by the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center; it was selected over other sites due to its central location. Four years of renovations, concluded in September 1981, resulted in its opening as a senior center. On April 17, 1979, midway through the renovation, the building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the center serves thousands of area residents monthly; nearly 90,000 visits were made to the center in 2003, of whom approximately 2/3 were lower-income. In 2021, the building was included as a contributing property in the Iowa City Downtown Historic District.

The Princess Sweet Shop is a historic building located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. It is noted as "an outstanding example of Art Deco design from 1935. The Carrara Glass façade, and streamlined woodwork are typical of Art Deco design of the 1920s and 1930s, but a rarity in a small town in Iowa." Ernie Karrys(Karamitsanis) and Nicholas P. Pergakis opened the Princess in 1915. Two years later, The Sweet Shop opened by Harry Pergakis. These three men were born in the town of Asprokampos, Greece. It was common for Greek immigrants to establish candy shop around the U.S.. They combined their operations at the Princess location in 1928. Sadly, Nicholas died of cancer in September 1928 at age 39.<relative of N. Pergakis> The building was destroyed in a fire on December 25, 1934. Local architect L.L. Klippel designed the new building, which was completed in 1935. It was the first building in Iowa Falls that was air conditioned. Members of the Harry Perkagis family maintained ownership until 1987. The business is still in operation as a soda fountain under different ownership.

The former United States Post Office is a historic building located in Creston, Iowa, United States. Built in 1901, the building housed the post office on the main floor and a federal courtroom on the second floor. The combination Beaux-Arts and Georgian Revival structure was designed by James Knox Taylor who was the Supervising Architect of the United States Department of the Treasury. The Beaux-Arts style is found in the cornice, lucarnes, portico, and the door and window enframements. The Georgian Revival is found in the general mass and elevation of the building, window detail, use of brick, the hipped roof, and the division of the main facade into a projecting central pavilion and single-bay wings. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The post office has subsequently been relocated to a more modern building, and this building has been converted into commercial space.

First National Bank is a historic building located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. The bank traces its founding to 1882 when the Commercial Bank of Iowa Falls was established. Its name was changed to First National when they built a two-story brick building at this location two years later. In 1917 the bank decided it needed a new facility, so they turned to the Lytle Company of Sioux City, Iowa, which specialized in designing bank buildings. They designed this two-story brick Neoclassical structure. A rich surface pattern on the building was achieved with the use of terra cotta and special colors of brick. First National continued in business here until December 21, 1932, when it closed its doors. Iowa Falls State Bank was organized and opened in this building on May 25, 1933. In more recent years they expanded into the modern building immediately to the west.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Estes Park Band Shell</span> United States historic place

Estes Park Band Shell is a historic building located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. Planning and construction of the band shell were a community project that began in 1931. They engaged Iowa Falls native L.L. Klippel to design the structure, and N.F. Guernsey of Sioux City, Iowa to landscape Estes Park. Completed later in the year, the Mission/Spanish Revival structure features two bell towers with round arch balconies that flank the proscenium arch. There is a cement basement that houses rehearsal space. The walls are stucco, and the structure is capped with a tiled hip roof with bracketed eaves. Over the years the band shell has hosted concerts, dances, and a variety of entertainment activities. Labor unions and political parties have held rallies here. Wendell Willkie spoke here when he ran for president in 1940. The band shell was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mills Tower Historic District</span> Historic district in Iowa, United States

The Mills Tower Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of six resources, including two contributing buildings, and four non-contributing buildings. All of the buildings are associated with the Illinois Central Railroad (IC). The Dubuque & Sioux City Railroad, an affiliate of the IC, laid the first rail track to Iowa Falls in 1866. The following year the Iowa Falls & Sioux City Railroad, another IC affiliate, continued construction of the line to the west, and it reached Sioux City by 1870. The Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway (BCR&N) by way of its affiliate the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Falls & North Western, entered Iowa Falls in 1880. Two years later it was expanded to the north and intersected with the IC main line, which required a controlled crossing. Little is known about this first crossing and what it contained.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Union Cemetery Gardener's Cottage</span> United States historic place

Union Cemetery Gardener's Cottage is a historic building located in Iowa Falls, Iowa, United States. When the town was platted in 1855 there was no provision for a cemetery. The women of the community formed the Social Gathering of Iowa Falls with the purpose of establishing a cemetery. They raised money and purchased the first 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) in 1860 from the three men who laid out Iowa Falls. By 1900 the organization minutes began referencing the need for the building for the sexton during stormy weather. It was not until 1918 that the Ladies Social Gathering authorized the construction of a building that they called a chapel and mortuary. The single-story American Craftsman cottage was designed by W.L. Peddicord. While it was used for a variety of functions, it appears that it was never used as a chapel. It has generally been used to house the sexton's tools, and it has been used as the cemetery office. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cedar Falls Post Office</span> United States historic place

The old Cedar Falls Post Office is an historic building located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1918, this was the city's first federal government building, and Black Hawk County became the only county in the state with two post offices that reported directly to the United States Post Office Department. It was built at the time when the design of federal building's were controlled by the Department of the Treasury. This building was designed by James A. Wetmore, who was the Acting Supervising Architect of the U.S. Office of the Supervising Architect. It was built by Des Moines contractor Frederick C. Weitz. The single-story Neoclassical brick structure features a symmetrical facade, a slightly recessed central bay, a round-arched entryway flanked by round arched windows, and Bedford stone trim.
