The University Granth Nirman Board (UGNB), also known as the Gujarat State University Granth Nirman Board (GSUGNB), is a book-publishing firm in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which publishes reference works at a break-even prices.

Organisation

The education minister of Gujarat is the chair-person of UGNB. The general body includes vice chancellors of all state universities, directors of various government departments, seven nominated members who are educationalists associated with higher education and three members from the book publishing and selling industry. [1]

History

When a national scheme to promote regional languages and introduce them as a medium of education and research at University level was introduced, the Government of India established the Granth Nirman Board in every state. Accordingly, University Granth Nirman Board was established in 1970 at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Initially, the Government of India granted it funds to publish book but since 1976, the Government of Gujarat bears its administrative costs. [2]

Publications

The Board publishes reference books for courses in various fields which are taught at university level in the state. These reference books are prepared by the experts in the relevant fields. As these books are published for students, they are kept inexpensive. [2]

The UGNB publishes books in Gujarati at a break-even prices for university and college students. By 2015, it has published over 1485 books in the humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, applied sciences, law, education, agriculture, animal husbandry and veterinary sciences, journalism, commerce and management, as well as dictionaries. [1] [3]

In 2011, UGNB published trilingual terminological dictionaries in 33 subjects. [3] In 2014, it published the edition of Meghadūta , a lyric poem by Kālidāsa, with translation in five Indian languages: Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati, English and Marathi. [4]

Controversies

The Indian National Congress (INC) protested and asked for recall of Gujarat ni Rajkiya Gatha (The political history of Gujarat) published by the Board. The INC cited inaccuracies in the book for the reason. [5] The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) accused the Board of corruption in purchase of a car and using funds for activities other than publishing. The Board had denied the accusations. [6]

Kumarpal Balabhai Desai is an author, critic, editor, journalist, columnist and translator from Gujarat, India. He studied and later taught at the Gujarat University. He is associated with several social and Gujarati literary organisations such as Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. He has written and edited more than hundred books including biographies and several works on Jainism. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.

Jhaverchand or Zaverchand Kalidas Meghani was an Indian poet, writer, social reformer and freedom fighter. He is a well-known name in the field of Gujarati literature. He was born in Chotila where the Government College has been renamed for this literary figure as Raashtreeya Shaayar Zaverchand Meghani College, Chotila. Mahatma Gandhi spontaneously gave him the title of Raashtreeya Shaayar. Besides this he received many awards like Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and Mahida Paaritoshik in literature. He authored more than 100 books. His first book was a translation work of Rabindranath Tagore's called Kathaa-u-Kaahinee titled Kurbani Ni Katha which was first published in 1922. He contributed widely to Gujarati folk literature. He went from village to village in search of folk-lores and published them in various volumes of Saurashtra Ni Rasdhar. He was also the Editor of Phulchhab Newspaper of Janmabhoomi group.

Gaurishankar Govardhanram Joshi (1892–1965), better known by his pen name Dhumaketu, was an Indian Gujarati-language writer, who is considered one of the pioneers of the Gujarati short story. He published twenty-four collections of short stories, as well as thirty-two novels on social and historical subjects, and plays and travelogues. His writing is characterised by a dramatic style, romanticism and powerful depiction of human emotions.

Vishnu Pandya is a journalist, biographer, poet, novelist, writer and political analyst from Gujarat, India. He has been the chairman of Gujarat Sahitya Akademi since 2017. He has been active in journalism for the last 40 years. Along with column writing in a Gujarati daily, he serves as General Secretary of Vishwa Gujarati Samaj.

Carlos González Vallés S.J., popularly known as Father Vallés, was a Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest and author. He lived in India for five decades and wrote extensively in Gujarati and on mathematics. He also wrote in English and Spanish. He was a recipient of the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, the highest award in Gujarati literature, in 1978. He was awarded the Padma Shri posthumously in 2021.

Ramanlal Jethalal Joshi was Gujarati language literary critic and editor from India. He studied and later taught at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. He served at several literary and educational institutions. He edited, authored and published criticism in more than forty-two books. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 1984.

Anantrai Manishankar Raval was a Gujarati critic and editor from India. Born and studied in Amreli, he worked briefly with a daily. He taught at several colleges before joining government as a director of language department. He wrote criticism chiefly under the pen name Shaunak and edited several works of Gujarati literature and litterateurs.

His other significant works include Aansu Ane Chandaranu (1963), and Gujarati Navalkatha, a work of literary criticism on Gujarati novels. Sharma was awarded the Gujarati literary honours Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, in 2004, and Dhanji Kanji Gandhi Suvarna Chandrak, in 1995.

The Gujarat Sahitya Akademi or Gujarat Sahitya Academy, established in 1981, is a government institution dedicated to the development of the languages spoken in Gujarat, India and their literature. Gujarati, an official language of Gujarat, is one of them; the others are Hindi, Sanskrit, Kutchi, Sindhi and Urdu. As of 2022, Bhagyesh Jha is the chairman of the Akademi.
