The University of Kentucky cheerleading squad represents the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. It was founded in 1905 and its first cheerleaders were yell leaders who were usually male. [1] University of Kentucky's first coed squad began in 1938, consisting of four males and four females. [1] The coed squad became the norm in the late 60s, early 70s. [1] T. Lynn Williamson was the cheerleading advisor from 1978 until his retirement in 2020. [2] Williamson oversaw the program and brought in coaches to help build and advance the cheerleading program. [1] Willimason's role encouraged Dale Baldwin to attend the University of Kentucky, who was a member of the University of Kentucky Cheerleading squad when the team won its first national championship in 1985. [2] The University of Kentucky cheerleading squad has won the Universal Cheerleaders Association National College Cheerleading Championship twenty-four times. [3]

National recognition

University of Kentucky cheer has won national championships the following years: 1985, 1987–88, 1992, 1995–2002, 2004–06, 2008–10, 2012, 2014 and 2016–19. [3] There has not been another team to win as many national championships as the University of Kentucky cheerleading squad. [1]

Blue squad

The Blue squad, formerly known as the Wildcat Squad in the 80s, [1] consists of at least 12 members (6 females and 6 males), not including alternates, who compete for the National Championship, and cheer for football and men's basketball. Members receive a scholarship up to in-state tuition at the University of Kentucky. [5]

White squad

The White squad, formerly known as the Ladycat Squad in the 80s, cheers for women's basketball and some football games. Over the years, the squad has increased in size from having four couples (8 people) in the 80s when Dale Baldwin was on the team to 20-25 cheerleaders. [1] Members of the White squad do receive some tuition scholarships. [5]

Hazing scandal

In 2020, the University of Kentucky cheerleading team was involved in a hazing investigation which resulted in firing of the cheerleading staff members, Head coach Jomo Thompson was fired along with assistant cheerleading coaches Spenser Clan, Ben Head, and Kelsey LaCroix while longtime advisor T. Lynn Williamson retired. [7] The scandal included hazing, public nudity and use of alcoholic drinks. In the aftermath, over 800 former Kentucky cheerleaders issued a statement in support of the coaches. [8]

Alumni reunion

Every five years, there is a cheerleading reunion for anyone that has cheered on the University of Kentucky cheerleading team. [1] Dale Baldwin, a cheerleading historian, has looked through yearbooks and roosters to locate and bring alumni together for these reunions. 350 former cheerleaders were at the last reunion. [1]

The Universal Cheerleaders Association Division I-A College Championships were first introduced in 1978 on CBS Sports. Top cheerleading teams from colleges across the U.S. and foreign countries perform routines consisting of gymnastics, partner stunts, dance moves, pyramids and high-tosses called basket tosses. The championship is split into large co-ed, small coed and all-girl divisions, with large co-ed being the most prestigious of the three. The University of Kentucky has won the most co-ed championships with 25 national titles. The University of South Florida won the most recent co-ed event in 2023, making it three championships in a row for the Bulls. The 2023 all-girl competition was won by Western Kentucky University, their second title in three years. Only four teams have ever won consecutive championships in UCA Division I-A history. The University of Kentucky has done it five times. The Wildcats first accomplished this in 1987-1988 and, most recently, from 2016 to 2019. The other cheerleading squads to achieve consecutive championships are the University of South Florida (2021-2023), NC State (1990-1991) and Ohio State University (1981-1983). The competition is run by Varsity Spirit.

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Spirit Squads comprise the cheerleading organization at the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. Being the first program ever to form worldwide, the University of Minnesota is consequently considered the "Birthplace of Cheerleading". Today, the Gopher Spirit Squads consist of four separate squads: a cheer squad, a dance team, a hockey cheer squad, and the school's mascot, Goldy Gopher. The squads consistently perform well at national competitions including 21 national championships in dance since 2003, a 2nd-place finish for All-Girl in 2013, a fifth-place finish in 2017, and four-time national champion Goldy Gopher in 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018. The current head coach is Sam Owens.

Kiara Nowlin is an American gymnast, World Champion power tumbler and an internationally ranked Cheerleader. She was a part of the 2007 World Age Games held in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada (WAG) Gold Medalist in Tumbling, the 2008 and 2009 USAG Winter Classic First Place Tumbler, and the 2009 USASF Gold Medal Young Athlete Merit Scholarship Recipient. She was at the 2009 World Age Games held in St. Petersburg, Russia, gold medalist in tumbling and gold medalist in double-mini trampoline. Nowlin also competed for the California Allstars in the Small Senior Co-Ed division (Smoed) and competed in the Unlimited Co-Ed division, and has won three U.S. All Star Federation Cheerleading Worlds Gold medals with her team. She was on the acrobatic gymnastics team at Baylor University from 2013 to 2017.

The US National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) was established as a way to bring cheerleaders together to learn new skills. Since 1951, the NCA has held summer camps, and is credited with the invention of the herkie jump, the pom pom, the spirit stick and being the first uniform manufacturer.

Cheer Extreme is most well known for its Small Senior and Large Senior teams, which received numerous national titles and have ranked in the Cheerleading Worlds competitions, with Cheer Extreme Senior Elite winning the first-place title in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2023. At the 2015 Cheerleading Worlds, Cheer Extreme's Coed Elite won first place. Also at the 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021 Cheerleading Worlds, Cheer Extreme's SSX won first place. Cheer Extreme has over 850 National Champion titles.

Memphis Pom is a collegiate dance team from the University of Memphis. The team has won 15 national titles.

The episodes focus especially on five individual Cheer Team members and include elements of the history of cheerleading, including the formation of the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA).

Monica Aldama is an American cheerleading coach. She is the coach of the co-ed cheerleading team at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.
