Ground transport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has always been difficult. The terrain and climate of the Congo Basin present serious barriers to road and rail construction, and the distances are enormous across this vast country. Furthermore, chronic economic mismanagement and internal conflict has led to serious under-investment over many years.
Katanga was one of the four large provinces created in the Belgian Congo in 1914. It was one of the eleven provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 1966 and 2015, when it was split into the Tanganyika, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Haut-Katanga provinces. Between 1971 and 1997, its official name was Shaba Province.
Lubumbashi is the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the country's southeasternmost part, along the border with Zambia. Kindu is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the capital of Maniema province. It has a population of about 200,000 and is situated on the Lualaba River at an altitude of about 500 metres, and is about 400 km west of Bukavu.
The University of Kinshasa, commonly known as UNIKIN, is one of the three major universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with the University of Kisangani and University of Lubumbashi. Originally founded in 1954 as Lovanium University during Belgian colonial rule, the current university was established following the division of the National University of Zaire (UNAZA) in 1981. The university is located in Kinshasa's Lemba commune.
The University of Lubumbashi, also known by the acronym UNILU, is one of the largest universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located in Lubumbashi in Haut-Katanga Province, previously Katanga Province. The campus is located in the northern part of the city, west of the airport.
The Vodacom Ligue 1 is the top division of the Congolese Association Football Federation, the governing body of football in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1958. In 2013, the highest attendance was set in the match DC Motema Pembe – AS Vita Club, which saw an attendance of 80,000 football fans at Stade des Martyrs. TP Mazembe is the most successful club with 20 titles.

The University of Mbuji Mayi (UM) is an accredited private university in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the province of Kasai-Oriental, city of Mbuji Mayi. The university is one of the many initiatives by the "Fondation Cardinal Malula". The UM, exists alongside other institutions of higher learning such as the C.U.M. People mostly mix these two different and separate entities. At its creation, the C.U.M was an Extension of national public universities" amongst which the University of Kinshasa, the University of Lubumbashi and the University of Kisangani. Shalom University of Bunia, also known as USB, is a private Christian university located in the city of Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With an enrolment of over 1100 students for the 2019–2020 academic year, it is one of the largest universities in the city of Bunia, along with Bunia University (UNIBU). It currently has six faculties offering 35 majors. It is one of 11 universities authorized to offer doctoral studies in the DRC.
