Équateur was a province in the northwest of the Belgian Congo and the successor Republic of the Congo, now known as Democratic Republic of the Congo. It had its origins in the Équateur District of the Congo Free State, the private property of King Leopold II of Belgium. It was upgraded to the status of a province in 1917. Between 1933 and 1947 it was named Coquilhatville. In 1962 it was divided into three smaller provinces, but there were recombined in 1966. Équateur was one of the eleven provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo until 2015, when it was split into the new, smaller Équateur province, as well as the Tshuapa, Mongala, Nord-Ubangi and Sud-Ubangi provinces.
The University of Kinshasa, commonly known as UNIKIN, is one of the three major universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with the University of Kisangani and University of Lubumbashi. Originally founded in 1954 as Lovanium University during Belgian colonial rule, the current university was established following the division of the National University of Zaire (UNAZA) in 1981. The university is located in Kinshasa's Lemba commune.

UNIGOM was established in 1993 as the Centre Universitaire du Nord-Kivu (CUNK) and later elevated to university status in 2005. People mostly mix these two different and separate entities. At its creation, the C.U.M was an Extension of national public universities" amongst which the University of Kinshasa, the University of Lubumbashi and the University of Kisangani. Loyola University of Congo, also referred to by its acronym ULC, is a private Roman Catholic higher education institution run by the Central Africa Province of the Society of Jesus in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was founded by the Jesuits in 2016. The Jesuits have pursued educational efforts in Kinshasa since 1954, and have named the university after the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius of Loyola.
Shalom University of Bunia, also known as USB, is a private Christian university located in the city of Bunia, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With an enrolment of over 1100 students for the 2019–2020 academic year, it is one of the largest universities in the city of Bunia, along with Bunia University (UNIBU). It currently has six faculties offering 35 majors. It is one of 11 universities authorized to offer doctoral studies in the DRC.
The Université Pédagogique Nationale, formerly named the Institut Pédagogique National, colloquially referred to by its acronym UPN, is a public institution of higher education dedicated to training teachers, enhancing their skills, and promoting studies and research in applied pedagogy. Located in the Ngaliema commune of Kinshasa, the university is led by Professor Masanga Maponda Anastasie. Established in 1961, it is the first pedagogical university in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Free University of the Great Lakes Countries, is a private Christian educational institution located in Goma, in the North Kivu Province of the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). ULPGL was founded in 1985, as a result of the Institut Supérieur de Théologie Protestante and was granted university status by the government in 1991. It is sponsored by six Protestant denominations, including two Baptists, two Pentecostals, one Anglican (EAC), and one Methodist (CLMC).
Jean-Claude Baende is a politician in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is a national deputy who represented represented Mbandaka in the National Assembly in 2011, and served as governor of Équateur Province from 2009 to 2013. Baende unsuccessfully ran for president during the 2023 Democratic Republic of the Congo general election.
