Upper Nile University (UNU) is a university in South Sudan.

Location

The university's main campus is located in the town of Malakal, Upper Nile State, on the banks of the White Nile. This location is approximately 650 kilometres (400 mi) by road north of Juba, the capital and largest city in that country. [2] The coordinates of the main university campus are: 9 33 00N, 31 39 30E (Latitude: 9.5508; Longitude: 31.6600).

Upper Nile University is one of the five public universities in South Sudan. The list includes the following institutions:

  1. University of Juba in Juba
  2. Rumbek University of Science and Technology in Rumbek
  3. University of Bahr El-Ghazal in Wau
  4. Upper Nile University in Malakal
  5. John Garang Memorial University in Bor

NB: University of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal in Aweil, Not yet established, not yet constructed, and not yet opened.

History

Upper Nile University was founded in 1991. Due to the Second Sudanese Civil War, some of the university faculties were relocated to Khartoum, Sudan, for the safety of staff, students and infrastructure. Following South Sudan's independence in July 2011, the university is consolidating all activities to its main campus in the city of Malakal, Upper Nile State, in South Sudan's northeast.

Bahr el Ghazal itself was a former province which was split from the Anglo-Egyptian mudiriyat, or province of Equatoria in 1948. The eastern border was the White Nile with Jonglei State on the opposite bank. To the northeast lied the Unity State. Other borders included Warrap State towards the northwest, Western Equatoria to the south and west, and Central Equatoria to the south.

Southern Sudan was an autonomous region consisting of the ten southern states of Sudan between its formation in July 2005 and independence as the Republic of South Sudan in July 2011. The autonomous government was initially established in Rumbek and later moved to Juba. It was bordered by Ethiopia to the east; Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south; and the Central African Republic to the west. To the north lies the predominantly Arab and Muslim region directly under the control of the central government. The region's autonomous status was a condition of a peace agreement between the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M) and the Government of Sudan represented by the National Congress Party ending the Second Sudanese Civil War. Ramciel is a location in South Sudan that will serve as the site of the future national capital. John Garang, the third president of Southern Sudan, allegedly wanted to place the national capital in Ramciel during his administration, but he died before South Sudan achieved independence and its largest city of Juba became the capital instead.

The South Sudan National Cup is an annual knockout association football competition in men's domestic South Sudanese football. Organized by the South Sudan Football Association, the cup began in 2012, not long after South Sudan gained independence.
