Dr. John Garang Memorial University Of Science and Technology (DrJGMUST) is a public university in the Republic of South Sudan. The school is named after the Sudanese Politician John Garang.

Location

The university's main campus is located in the town of Bor, Jonglei State, on the banks of the White Nile River. This location lies approximately 185 kilometres (115 mi), by road, north of Juba, the capital and largest city in that country. [1] The approximate coordinates of the main university campus are: 6° 13' 12.00"N, 31° 33' 0.00"E (Latitude: 6.220000; Longitude: 31.550000). The coordinates are approximate because the university campus does not yet show on most publicly available maps.

History

The university was founded in February 2007, as the John Garang Institute of Science and Technology. The institute was elevated to university status in 2010. [3] [4]

As of January 2014, the university maintained five Colleges and one Institute, with plans for new ones to open in the future. The following Colleges are currently in operation: [5]

Dr. John Garang De Mabior was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005, he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement as a commander in chief during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks, from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005. A developmental economist by profession, Garang was one of the major influences on the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan’s independence from the rule of Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir.

The SPLA-Nasir was a splinter faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), a rebel group that fought in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Originally created as an attempt by the Nuer tribe to replace SPLA leader John Garang in August 1991, it gradually became coopted by the government. The break away of Riek Machar from SPLM/A resulted in Nuer ethnic group massacring Garang's ethnic Dinka from Bor in the Bor massacre in 1991. This split resulted in the 1994 National Convention of New Sudan in Chukudum.

Abel Alier Kwai is a South Sudanese politician and judge who served as First Vice President of Sudan between 1971 and 1982 and as President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region between 1972 and 1978. Abel Alier was a politician who managed to complete his college education among many Southern Sudanese. He is an internationally respected judge, human-rights lawyer and activist on behalf of Christians in the Sudan. Former Vice President of Sudan (1971–1982), he served as the first president of the High Executive Council of Southern Sudan. He sits on the Permanent Court of International Arbitration in The Hague and is recognized as Sudan's most prominent Christian lawyer. His latest book is Southern Sudan: Too Many Agreements Dishonoured.

Kuol Manyang is a South Sudanese politician. He is a member of the SPLM. He became governor of Jonglei state on 15 December 2007, following the first former governor, Philip Thon Leek from Dinka Bor, to curb cattle raiding and abduction of children in the region.
