Kleve is a town in the Lower Rhine region of northwestern Germany near the Dutch border and the River Rhine. From the 11th century onwards, Cleves was capital of a county and later a duchy. Today, Cleves is the capital of the district of Kleve in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is home to one of the campuses of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.

The men's eight competition at the 1968 Summer Olympics took place at Virgilio Uribe Rowing and Canoeing Course, Mexico City, Mexico. It was held from 13 to 19 October and was won by the team from West Germany, with the teams from Australia and the Soviet Union claiming silver and bronze respectively. It was West Germany's first appearance as a separate nation, though the United Team of Germany had won gold in 1960 and silver in 1964, with West Germans making up those teams. The silver medal was Australia's best result yet in the event; the nation had previously taken bronze in 1952 and 1956. The Soviet Union reached the podium in the men's eight for the first time since earning silver in 1952. Twelve teams from 12 nations attended the competition. Five of the teams replaced a total of five rowers during the competition, making for a total of 113 rowers who participated in the races.
David Campbell is a Canadian Olympic middle-distance runner. He represented his country in the men's 1500 meters at the 1988 Summer Olympics. His time was a 3:42.97 in the first heat.
Jennifer Walinga is a retired rower who competed between the 1980s to 1990s. As a member of the national rowing team for Canada, Walinga placed 4th at the 1983 Junior World Championships in Vichy, France, 2nd at the 1984 U23 Sr B World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, and 5th at the 1985 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium. In coxed four events, Walinga won gold at the 1986 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 1986 World Rowing Championships. At the 1987 World Championships, the team placed 5th in Copenhagen, Denmark. She and her crew of Tricia Smith, Heather Clarke, and Jane Tregunno (Stamp) had a seventh place finish in the coxed four at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
