Urban School of San Francisco is an independent high school located in the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco, California, United States. [1]

Contents

History

Urban was founded in 1966 [2] by a group of Marin Country Day School parents. [3] Urban has grown from 22 students into a student body of over 400. [4]

Leadership

After 32 years, Mark Salkind, a 1970 Urban graduate, [5] retired as Head of School in June 2019. Dan B. Miller was appointed Head of School in July 2019. [6]

Student life

Assistant Head of Student Life, Charlotte Worsley oversees Urban's over 40 student clubs, including 14 for-student by-student affinity spaces. [7] Additionally, Urban has active student government, outdoor and class trips program, and a student newspaper, yearbook, and online literary and arts journal. Performing arts opportunities include fall and winter theater productions, circus class performances, and the annual One Acts Festival, as well as comprehensive jazz band, choral, and ensemble programs. [8]

Athletics

A member of the Bay Area Conference and Bay Counties League-West (BCL-West), Urban hosts title-winning interscholastic teams in baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Athletic practices and games are held in the Mark Salkind Center Gym, the St. Agnes Gym, and other venues throughout the city and in Golden Gate Park. Over 65 percent of all Urban students participate on 27 boys, girls and co-ed athletic teams in the department. [9]

Student newspaper

Urban's student newspaper, called "The Urban Legend," is a member of the National Scholastic Press Association.

The Alcazar Theatre was a 1,145 seat theatre located at 260 O'Farrell Street, San Francisco, California, between Mason and Powell, built in 1911 by architects Cunningham and Politeo for producer Fred Belasco, replacing the previous Alcazar Theatre one block to the east, which was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake fire. This venue soon became one of San Francisco's leading legitimate theatres offering a wide range of productions, and like its predecessor, also housed a popular resident stock company. The new school occupies the former premises of St. Elizabeth High School in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, California, where the majority of the households are currently Hispanic. The purpose of the school is to provide an affordable, college prep education to needy students in the depressed area of inner-city Oakland, the underserved families of the East Bay. The athletic program of Cristo Rey participates in the CIF North Coast Section as a non-league affiliate.

Brooke Andersen is an American track and field athlete known for throwing events. Her personal best in the hammer throw of 80.17 m (263 ft 0 in), set May 20, 2023 in Tucson, Arizona, ranks her as the #3 thrower of all time. Her personal best weight throw is 25.07 m. On July 17, 2022, at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Brooke Andersen won the gold medal with a hammer throw of 78.96 m.
