Urkeri is a small village located in the district of Uttar Kannada in the state of Karnataka in India. It has a population of about 963 persons living in around 214 households. Urkeri is a temple Village. The main deity is Lord Ganesh. Lord Ganesha is revered as the village God in these villages, in the north Kanara district. The chariot ceremony of Ganapati is celebrated on Maghi Pournima. The temple is the main attraction at Urkeri, receiving many devotees per year. Urkeri Shree Swayambhoo Devasthana is an ancient temple.

THE STORY OF SHREE SWAYAMBHOO VINAYAKA DEVARU, URKERI is as follows: There was starvation in a part of North India where King mandhata was ruling. So he migrated from North India to the place Kundgoni which is very near to Urkeri. He wanted to construct Krishna Idol. But he did not get it the way he wanted. He approached Guru ji Bharadwaj and explained his problems to him. Guru ji Bhradwaj asked him to perform Shri Ganesh pooja and start his work so that he would not face any obstacles. On that night Lord ganesha came into King Mandhata's dream and informed where he will be. Next day King mandhata went there and found Cow dung (Gomaya).He prayed to Lord Ganesha and worshipped Gomaya only assuming Lord ganesha is in that place. Note that Gomaya is very very pure. After he worships King was able to get the Krishna Idol the way he wanted and that Krishna is Our Dear Lord Ghore Gopal Krishna. Our Dear Lord Ganesha came from earth in that place. As it has come from the earth it is called as Sri Swayambhu Vinayak Deva. May Sri Swayambhu Vinayak Deva blesses all. Every day many devotees come to temple and get his blessings. People do Bhajanaa every day in the evening. This God Vinayaka is the dearest God to everyone.
The earliest history of the village is not known.
Urkeri is full of coconut and Arekanut trees. Rice is normally grown as annual plant over here. All the people will gather during Ganesha Chaturthi in the temple and offer pooja to the God. Farmers of this village will play suggi (a type group dance) once in a year.
Urkeri is an important place where most of the people learn Sanskrit.

Urkeri is about 450 km from Bangalore, 240 km north of Mangalore and about 65 km from Karwar. It is near the college towns Suratkal and Manipal. Urkeri can be reached by buses and Autos from Kumta (5 km), on National Highway 17(NH-17). Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation KSRTC also runs buses from many Kumta to Urkeri. It near Gokarna. Private buses (Vijayanand Roadlines - VRL, Sugama, Sea Bird, etc.) operate night journeys from the capital city of Bangalore to Kumta daily. It can be reached by train Konkan railway on the Mumbai to Mangalore route. The railway station is 5 km away from the village.
Ashtavinayak literally means "eight Ganeshas" in Sanskrit. Ganesh is the Hinduism/Hindu deity of unity, prosperity & learning and removes obstacles. The term refers to eight Ganeshas. Ashtavinayaka yatra trip refers to a pilgrimage to the eight Hindu temples in Maharashtra state of India that house eight distinct idols of Ganesh, in a pre-ascertained sequence. The Ashtavinayak yatra or pilgrimage covers the eight ancient holy temples of Ganesh which are situated around Pune. Each of these temples has its own individual legend and history, as distinct from each other as the murtis in each temple. However, there are other temples of eight Ganesh in various other parts of Maharashtra; the ones around Pune are more well known than the former.
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of Ganesha to earth from 'Kailash Parvat' with his mother goddess Parvati/Gauri. The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals. Observations include chanting of Vedic hymns and Hindu texts such as, prayers and brata (fasting). Offerings and prasadam from the daily prayers, that are distributed from the pandal to the community, include sweets such as modaka as it is believed to be a favourite of Lord Ganesh. The festival ends on the tenth day after start, when the idol is carried in a public procession with music and group chanting, then immersed in a nearby body of water such as a river or sea. In Mumbai alone, around 150,000 statues are immersed annually. Thereafter the clay idol dissolves and Ganesha is believed to return to Mount Kailash to Parvati and Shiva. The festival celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence and is observed throughout India, especially in the states such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, and is usually celebrated privately at home in Tamil Nadu. Ganesh Chaturthi is also observed in Nepal and by the Hindu diaspora elsewhere such as in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, other parts of the Caribbean, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, United States, and Europe

Sankashti Chaturthi is an auspicious day dedicated to Ganesha. This day is observed in every lunar month of the Hindu calendar on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha. If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday it is called Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi. Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi is considered highly important among all Sankashti Chaturthi days. The Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati Temple is a Hindu temple located in Titwala, a small town in the Kalyan taluka of Thane district – near Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu, elephant-headed god of wisdom Ganesha. Titwala is believed to be the putative site of the hermitage of sage Kanva, foster parent of Shakuntala who was born here. Ganesh Jayanti, also known as Magha shukla chaturthi, Tilkund chaturthi, and Varad chaturthi, is a Hindu festival. This occasion celebrates the birth day of Ganesha, the lord of wisdom. It is a popular festival particularly in the Indian state of Maharashtra and it is also celebrated in goa held during the shukla paksha chaturthi day in the month of Maagha as per almanac, which corresponds to the Gregorian calendar month of January/February. In 2019, Shri Ganesh Jayanti falls on 8th February (Friday). The distinction between the Ganesh Jayanti and the more popular, almost pan-Indian Ganesh Chaturthi festival is that the latter festival is observed in the month of August/September. According to one tradition, Ganesh Chaturthi is also considered as the birthday of Ganesha. This festival of Ganesha is also called as the Tilo Chauth or Sakat Chauthis in Uttar Pradesh, where Ganesha is invoked on behalf of the son of a family. It is also called as Tilkund chaturthi in Maharashtra.

Panchama is a small village famous for the temple of Panchama Ganesh or Siddha Vinayaka as it is locally known. Legend says that the Gajapati King Purushottama deva of Puri on the way to his conquest of the Kanchi Kingdom recovered the image in the hollow of two trees of Bara and Ashwattha and paid his homage to the image after its consecration. Since then the place is sanctified and has become an important centre of Ganapataya worship, preserving the great tradition of Panchadevata worship of Orissa. The idol still remains inside the trunk of two large ficus trees. A temple is constructed around it. Around 200,000 devotees from Orissa and Andhra Pradesh visit this shrine on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Shri Ganesh Mahima also called Shri Krishna Vivah is a 1950 Hindi mythological film directed by Homi Wadia. The film was made under Wadia's Basant Pictures Banner with music composed by S. N. Tripathi. Meena Kumari, after her career as a child artist, started doing adult roles as heroines in mythologicals and fantasy genres before she made it in mainstream cinema with Baiju Bawra (1952). Shri Viswa Vinayaka Mandir also called Ganesh Mandir is a Hindu temple of Ganesha. It is located in Rhenock Rungdung,East Sikkim, India.
