Urnunta-ea was a Mesopotamian goddess originally worshiped in Girsu as one of the daughters of Ningirsu and Bau. She might have been associated with rain clouds. She is known from an Early Dynastic inscription of Urukagina, from texts from the reign of the Second Dynasty of Lagash, and from the god list An = Anum . In the last of these sources she appears in the circle of deities associated with Lisin, rather than Bau or Ningirsu.

Name

The theonym Urnunta-ea can be translated from Sumerian as "who comes out of the lap of the prince" (implicitly: Ningirsu). [2] It was written in cuneiform as d úr-nun-ta-è-a. [3] It is sometimes romanized as Urnunta'ea [4] or Urnuntaea. [5] A variant spelling, dúr-é-nun-ta-è-a, is known from the Gudea cylinders. [3] Thorkild Jacobsen [1] and Dietz Otto Edzard suggested reading it as Uragrunta-ea. [6] However, according to Manfred Krebernik  [ de ] this is erroneous. [3] A further variant known from a fragment of an Old Babylonian litany from Kish describing the pantheon of Kesh or Adab, as well as from a single Neo-Babylonian (or later) copy of the god list An = Anum , dbur-nun-ta-è-a, reflects the reinterpretation of the name as "she [came forth] from the Euphrates". [7] Structurally similar theonyms include Meslamta-ea, Šaturnunta'e and Nu-E2.NUN-ta-e. [8] [a]

Associations with other deities

As early as during the reign of Urukagina, Urnunta-ea was regarded as a child of Bau and Ningirsu. [7] In the composition preserved on the Gudea cylinders, she and Zazaru, Nipa'e, Ḫegirnuna, Ḫesaga, Zurmu and Zarmu are jointly addressed as daughters and "unruly children" of Bau and Ningirsu and as the lukur (high-ranking female attendants) of the latter. [6] Based on the description of the members of this group as a source of abundance, Jacobsen proposed that they represented the rain clouds. [1] Gebhard J. Selz  [ de ] notes that Ḫegirnuna seemingly was originally an independent deity of greater importance than the other six, and on this basis assumes that initially only Urnunta-ea, Zazaru and Nipa'e, who also occur together in an earlier inscription, formed a group defined by their shared status as daughters of Bau. [10]

In An = Anum, Urnunta-ea instead occurs among the children of Lisin (tablet II, line 77). [7] According to Ryan D. Winters this most likely reflects a degree of overlap or interchange between the circles of deities associated with Bau and these belonging to the local pantheon of Kesh, one of Lisin's cult centers. [11]

Worship

Urnunta-ea was worshiped in Girsu. [3] The first known reference has been identified in an Early Dynastic inscription of Urukagina of Lagash. [10] It deals with his building activities in Girsu, as well as Tiraš and Antasur, presumed to be settlements in its immediate proximity. [4] It mentions the construction of chapels dedicated to Urnunta-ea, Nipa'e and Zazaru in a new temple of Lammašaga. [5] Fragments of this text have been identified on a clay cone and jars found in Girsu. [12] No other attestations of Urnunta-ea are available from the Early Dynastic period. [10]

An unprovenanced inscription of one of the two rulers from the Second Dynasty of Lagash bearing the name Ur-Ningirsu, most likely Ur-Ningirsu I, [13] [b] commemorates the construction of a house of worship for Urnunta-ea. [14] [c] It was located in Girsu, and most likely was a chapel in the temple of Lammašaga, in this case identified as a title of Ninsun rather than a distinct goddess. [5]

The composition preserved on the Gudea cylinders, a hymn commemorating the reconstruction of Ningirsu's temple Eninnu, [15] also mentions Urnunta-ea. [3] She is described praying on behalf of Gudea alongside six other goddesses also regarded as daughters of Bau and Ningirsu. [6]

Gudea (Sumerian: 𒅗𒌤𒀀, Gu3-de2-a) was a Sumerian ruler (ensi) of the state of Lagash in Southern Mesopotamia, who ruled c. 2080–2060 BC (short chronology) or 2144–2124 BC (middle chronology). He probably did not come from the city, but had married Ninalla, daughter of the ruler Ur-Baba (2164–2144 BC) of Lagash, thus gaining entrance to the royal house of Lagash. He was succeeded by his son Ur-Ningirsu. Gudea ruled at a time when the center of Sumer was still ruled by the Gutian dynasty, and when the Akkadian king Ishtup-Ilum ruled to the north in Mari. Under Gudea, Lagash had a golden age, and seemed to enjoy a high level of independence from the Gutians, a language isolate speaking people who had arrived from regions to the northeast of Mesopotamia.

Bau (cuneiform: 𒀭𒁀𒌑 dBa-U2; also romanized as Baba or Babu) was a Mesopotamian goddess. The reading of her name is a subject of debate among researchers, though Bau is considered the conventional spelling today. While initially regarded simply as a life-giving deity, in some cases associated with the creation of mankind, over the course of the third and second millennia BCE she also acquired the role of a healing goddess. She could be described as a divine midwife. In art she could be depicted in the company of waterfowl or scorpions.

Zababa was a Mesopotamian god. He was the tutelary deity of the city of Kish and was regarded as a god of war. He was initially seen as a son of Enlil, though in Assyria during the reign of Sennacherib he started to be viewed as a son of Ashur instead. The goddess Bau came to be viewed as his wife after her introduction to Kish in the Old Babylonian period.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nanshe</span> Mesopotamian goddess

Nanshe was a Mesopotamian goddess in various contexts associated with the sea, marshlands, the animals inhabiting these biomes, namely bird and fish, as well as divination, dream interpretation, justice, social welfare, and certain administrative tasks. She was regarded as a daughter of Enki and sister of Ningirsu, while her husband was Nindara, who is otherwise little known. Other deities who belonged to her circle included her daughter Nin-MAR.KI, as well as Hendursaga, Dumuzi-abzu and Shul-utula. In Ur she was incorporated into the circle of Ningal, while in incantations she appears alongside Ningirima or Nammu.

Pabilsaĝ was a Mesopotamian god. Not much is known about his role in Mesopotamian religion, though it is known that he could be regarded as a bow-armed warrior deity, as a divine cadastral officer or a judge. He might have also been linked to healing, though this remains disputed. In his astral aspect, first attested in the Old Babylonian period, he was a divine representation of the constellation Sagittarius.

Aya was a Mesopotamian goddess associated with dawn. Multiple variant names were attributed to her in god lists. She was regarded as the wife of Shamash, the sun god. She was worshiped alongside her husband in Sippar. Multiple royal inscriptions pertaining to this city mention her. She was also associated with the Nadītu community inhabiting it. She is less well attested in the other cult center of Shamash, Larsa, though she was venerated there as well. Additional attestations are available from Uruk, Mari and Assur. Aya was also incorporated into Hurrian religion, and in this context she appears as the wife of Shamash's counterpart Šimige.

Ḫegir (𒀭𒃶𒄈) or Ḫegirnunna (𒀭𒃶𒄈𒉣𒈾) was a Mesopotamian goddess who belonged to the pantheon of Lagash. She was considered a daughter of Bau and Ningirsu.

Gatumdug was a Mesopotamian goddess regarded as the tutelary deity of Lagash and closely associated with its kings. She was initially worshiped only in this city and in NINA, but during the reign of Gudea a temple was built for her in Girsu. She appears in a number of literary compositions, including the hymn inscribed on the Gudea cylinders and Lament for Sumer and Ur.

Lisin was a Mesopotamian deity initially regarded as a goddess and addressed as ama, "mother," who later came to be regarded as a god and developed an association with fire. The name was also applied to a star associated with Nabu, presumed to correspond to Antares. Lisin's spouse was Ninsikila, whose gender also changed between periods. It was believed that they had eight children. The initial cult center of Lisin is uncertain, with locations such as Abu Salabikh, Adab and Kesh being often proposed. She is attested in texts from various cities, including Umma, Lagash, Nippur and Meturan. Only a single literary text focused on Lisin is known, a lament in which she mourns the death of one of her sons, for which she blames her mother Ninhursag. Both female and male version of Lisin also appears in other similar texts.

Nindara was a Mesopotamian god worshiped in the state of Lagash. He was the husband of Nanshe, and it is assumed that his relevance in Mesopotamian religion depended on this connection. His character remains opaque due to his small role in known texts.

Nindub or Ninduba was a Mesopotamian god associated with exorcisms. He is attested chiefly in sources from the state of Lagash, including Early Dynastic offering lists and the cylinders of Gudea. He continued to be worshiped in this area in the Ur III period. However, in the Old Babylonian period he appears only in a small number of god lists presumed to reflect archaic tradition.

Shulshaga (Šulšaga) or Shulsagana (Šulšagana) was a Mesopotamian god. He was a part of the state pantheon of the city-state of Lagash. His name means "youth of his heart" in Sumerian, with the possessive pronoun possibly referring to Shulshaga's father, Ningirsu.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Geshtinanna</span> Mesopotamian goddess

Geshtinanna was a Mesopotamian goddess best known due to her role in myths about the death of Dumuzi, her brother. It is not certain what functions she fulfilled in the Mesopotamian pantheon, though her association with the scribal arts and dream interpretation is well attested. She could serve as a scribe in the underworld, where according to the myth Inanna's Descent she had to reside for a half of each year in place of her brother.

The Gudea cylinders are a pair of terracotta cylinders dating to c. 2125 BC, on which is written in cuneiform a Sumerian myth called the Building of Ningirsu's temple. The cylinders were made by Gudea, the ruler of Lagash, and were found in 1877 during excavations at Telloh, Iraq and are now displayed in the Louvre in Paris, France. They are the largest cuneiform cylinders yet discovered and contain the longest known text written in the Sumerian language.

Dumuzi-abzu, sometimes spelled Dumuziabzu, was a Mesopotamian goddess worshiped in the state of Lagash. She was the tutelary deity of Kinunir.

Lammašaga was a Mesopotamian goddess who functioned as the sukkal of Bau. She belonged to a class of protective deities known as Lamma. She was originally worshiped in Lagash and Girsu, though attestations are also available from other cities. A hymn focused on her was copied in scribal schools in the Old Babylonian period.

Nin-MAR.KI was a Mesopotamian goddess. The reading and meaning of her name remain uncertain, though options such as Ninmar and Ninmarki can be found in literature. In the past the form Ninkimar was also in use. She was considered the divine protector of cattle, and additionally functioned as an oath deity. She might have been associated with long distance trade as well. It is possible that in art she was depicted in the company of birds, similar to her mother Nanshe. Other deities associated with her include other members of the pantheon Lagash, such as Dumuzi-abzu and Hendursaga.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Igalim</span> Mesopotamian god

Igalim or Igalimma was a Mesopotamian god from the local pantheon of the state of Lagash. He was closely associated with Ningirsu, possibly originating as the personification of the door of his temple, and was regarded as a member of his family. His older brother was Shulshaga and his mother was Bau, as already attested in Early Dynastic sources. Until the end of the Ur III period he was worshiped in Lagash and Girsu, where he had a temple, though he also appears in a number of later texts.

Zame Hymns or Zami Hymns are a sequence of 70 Sumerian hymns from the Early Dynastic period discovered in Abu Salabikh. Their conventional title is modern, and reflects the recurring use of the formula zame, "praise". They are the oldest known Mesopotamian collection of hymns, and some of the oldest literary cuneiform texts overall. No copies have been discovered outside Abu Salabikh, and it is possible that they reflect a local tradition. However, partial parallels have been identified in texts associated with other sites such as Fara and Kesh.
