Uttam Kumar, widely known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema. His career spanned three decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 1980. Kumar is regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema and also the most popular and successful film star in Bengal.
Supriya Devi was an Indian actress who is known for her work in Bengali cinema for more than 50 years. She is best known for her portrayal of Neeta in Ritwik Ghatak's Bengali film Megha Dhaka Tara (1960). She was conferred the Filmfare Award and the BFJA Award twice. In 2011, she received the Banga-Vibhushan, the highest civilian honour in West Bengal. In 2014, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, the fourth highest civilian award in India, for her contributions to the entertainment industry.
Sabitri Chatterjee is an Indian actress who is known for her work in Bengali theatre and cinema. Her career spans more than 60 years. She is the recipient of BFJA Awards for two times. In 1999, she was conferred with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting in Bengali theatre. In 2013, she was awarded by the Government of West Bengal its highest civilian award; the Banga Bibhushan. In 2014, Government of India conferred upon her its fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri.
Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Saptapadi is a 1961 Indian Bengali-language romantic drama film by Ajoy Kar, starring Suchitra Sen, Uttam Kumar, Chhabi Biswas and Chhaya Debi. Music direction and playback singing for Kumar voice was by Hemanta Mukherjee and in Sen's voice by Sandhya Mukherjee. The story is based on a 1958 novel by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay. This is regarded as one of the greatest romantic film in the history of Bengali cinema. The film become highest grossing Bengali film in 1961. It was featured retrospectively at the 45th IFFI in the "homage section" of Indian panorama.
Amanush (transl. Inhuman) is a 1975 Indian action drama film made in both Hindi and Bengali languages, produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Uttam Kumar, Utpal Dutt and Asit Sen. Both the versions were hits. The film was based on Shaktipada Rajguru novel Naya Basat which he written based on Sundarban. The film music composed by the popular Bengali singer-composer Shyamal Mitra.
Chowronghee is a 1968 Indian Bengali drama film by Pinaki Bhushan Mukherjee, starring Uttam Kumar and Subhendu Chatterjee who played the lead role and Biswajit Chatterjee, Supriya Devi and Anjana Bhowmick in supporting role. The music of the film composed by Ashima Bhattachariya who also produced this film. The film is based on a Bengali novel of the same name by Shankar and was a huge hit in its own right. The film is regarded as one of the greatest film in Bengali cinema and for Uttam's career.
Anand Ashram is a 1977 Indian drama film directed and co-written by Shakti Samanta, based on a story by film director and novelist, Sailajananda Mukhopadhyay. It starred Ashok Kumar, Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles. This film has a Bengali version too with the same title released on the same day, Samanta has previously made another double version, Amanush (1975) with the same lead actors, however this film didn't do well at the box office. The same story was earlier filmed as 'Doctor' in 1940 starred by Pankaj Mullick, Jyoti Prakash, Ahindra Choudhuri, Bharati Devi.
Bikash Roy was an Indian actor and filmmaker who is known for his work in Bengali cinema. He is well known for his character roles and for his own style of acting in Bengali films from the late 1940s until the mid-1980s.
Sesh Anka is a 1963 Indian Bengali-language thriller film directed by Haridas Bhattacharya and made by Kalpana Movies, Kolkata. This film was loosely inspired by the 1958 film Chase a Crooked Shadow. The film starred Uttam Kumar in lead with Sharmila Tagore, Sabitri Chatterjee, Pahadi Sanyal, Bikash Roy, Kamal Mitra and others in supporting role. Critics stated this movie as one of the best thrillers in Bengali Cinema. The film was remade in Tamil in 1964 as Puthiya Paravai and was an inspiration for the Hindi movie Khoj (1989).
Jadi Jantem is a 1974 Indian Bengali-language drama thriller film directed by Tarun Majumdar as Yatrik. This movie was released under the banner of Chitrajug. Uttam Kumar played the role of main protagonist of the movie, Mr. P. K. Basu, Bar-at-law. This movie was based on the thriller novel Nagchampa of Narayan Sanyal.
Bon Palashir Padabali is a Bengali romance drama film directed by Uttam Kumar, who also co-wrote the screenplay. It is an adaptation of a 1960 same name novel by Ramapada Chowdhury. This is a dream project for Uttam and one of the second film where he directed. The film was released on 9 February 1973, under the banner of Uttam' foundation Shilpi Sangsad. The film became a success at the box office. This is multi-starred film, starring Uttam himself with Supriya Devi, Anil Chatterjee, Bikash Roy and many others.
Basu Poribar is a 1952 Bengali film directed by Nirmal Dey under the banner of M.P Productions. Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Supriya Devi, Bhanu Banerjee and Jiben Bose play lead roles. The film was released on 11 April 1952. It was the debut film of legendary Bengali actress Supriya Devi. It was the first successful film starring Uttam Kumar it's become superhit at the box office. After seven back to back flop films he was called 'flop master general', and he considered to leave the film industry. The success of this film saved his career. The film was remade in Hindi as Hum Hindustani in 1960.
Surya Sikha is a Bengali romance drama film directed by Salil Dutta. This film was released on 12 July 1963 in the banner of Chhayachhabi Pratisthan. The film starring Uttam Kumar Supriya Debi in lead role and Chabi Biswas, Utpal Dutta and others played supporting role.
Sanyasi Raja is a Bengali drama film directed by Piyush Bose and produced by Asim Sarkar. The film stars Panchanan Bhattacharya, Ahindra Choudhury, Chandrabati Devi, Anubha Gupta, Anup Kumar, Shyam Laha, Kamal Mitra and Uttam Kumar in the lead roles.
