V-A-C Foundation is an international non-profit private organization founded in 2009 with an emphasis on supporting contemporary art exhibitions and projects emerging from Russia and the former Soviet Union.
Founded in 2009 by businessman and philanthropist Leonid Mikhelson and Teresa Iarocci Mavica, [1] who has been Director of the Foundation since its inception, [2] the V-A-C Foundation is a nonprofit organization that initiates, supports, presents, and preserves contemporary art projects by internationally based visual and multidisciplinary artists, with a particular emphasis on artists located in, or emerging from, the Russian Federation and the former Soviet Union. [3]
In 2015, Italian starchitect Renzo Piano was commissioned to design the foundation's venue (GES-2) in Moscow. [4] [5] In 2017, V-A-C Foundation's Venetian headquarter Zattere was launched. Located in a renovated historic palazzo situated on Zattere and overlooking the Canale della Giudecca, this venue hosts exhibitions, events and residencies. The renovation of the historic Palazzo delle Zattere was carried out by local architect Alessandro Pedron, transforming the building into a new centre for contemporary culture for the city of Venice. GES-2, also known as MGES-2 and Tramvaynaya – is a decommissioned power station on the Bolotnaya Embankment, in the Yakimanka District of Moscow. Originally launched in 1907, it was the second major power station built in Moscow. GES-2 operated from 1907 to 2014. After its closure, GES-2 was sold to the V-A-C Foundation, who initiated a restoration and renovation project to convert the main building and surrounding area into a new cultural venue for the city of Moscow. GES-2 is being redesigned by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.
Polina Vladimirovna Kanis is a Russian artist, winner of the Kandinsky Prize (2011) and the Sergey Kuryokhin Prize (2016). She graduated from the Rodchenko Art School (Moscow) in 2011. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, film festivals and film screenings, including a solo exhibition at the Haus der Kunst Munich (2017)., the VISIO program at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence (2019), the parallel program of the Manifesta 10, in 2015 at the Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the VI Moscow International Biennale of Young Art (2015), the Moscow International Experimental Film Festival, the Hamburg Short Film Festival (2019) and many others. Her films are in the collections of numerous museums and foundations, including the Fonds régional d'art contemporain Bretagne, Fondazione In Between Art Film, Rome, Foundation Kadist, Paris, etc. Kanis was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten programs in Amsterdam (2017-2018) and ISCP New York (2020).
