The Vaanam Art Festival is an annual cultural event organized by filmmaker Pa Ranjith's Neelam Cultural Centre. The festival aims to celebrate Dalit culture, promote social awareness, and provide a platform for artistic expression. It takes place in April, coinciding with Dalit History Month and the birth month of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. [1]
The inaugural edition of the 'Vaanam' festival took place at St. Ebbas Girls School on RK Salai in Mylapore, Chennai, over a span of three days, commencing with an opening ceremony at the hands of renowned filmmaker Pa Ranjith. The festival, featuring a diverse range of cultural expressions, including song, dance, drama, and art, aimed to foster discussions and debates on critical societal issues. [2] Pa Ranjith, who was behind the festival, highlighted the significance of the event in addressing prevailing social challenges and initiating conversations on universal equality. [1] The festival showcased various performances, including the 'Parai&Oppari' presentation, the 'Magizhchi' album launch & performance' by The Casteless Collective, [3] and a 'Parai performance' by numerous skilled artists. Beyond entertainment, 'Vaanam' incorporated literature workshops, story-telling sessions, Silambam demonstrations, Therukural street-drama, puppet shows, and thought-provoking plays like 'Munnavar.' [4] Notable social campaigner Jignesh Mewani, in a spirited speech, emphasized the role of art forms, particularly cinema in the style of Pa Ranjith, as crucial mediums for advancing the war against caste. The festival's title, 'Vaanam,' symbolizes the equality of all under the sky, reinforcing the call for universal equality and pride. [5]
The festival commenced with the PK Rosy Film Festival at Prithvi Theatre in Saligramam, showcasing the best of Dalit cinema from across the country. [6] It served as a curtain-raiser for the larger Vaanam Festival for Dalit History Month. [7] The festival featured a diverse range of events, including a photography exhibition documenting the lives of marginalized communities, an art exhibition challenging mainstream perspectives, and a theatre festival showcasing productions from versatile theatre groups. Additionally, the festival honored the late Dalit Subbaiah, known for his advocacy of Ambedkarite and Marxist ideologies. The literary festival included the presentation of an award to writer Raj Gauthaman and interactive sessions for contemporary writers. [8] The cricket competition and Verchol, a two-day Dalit literary meet in Madurai, added further dimensions to the festival. The artworks exhibited at Dakshina Chitra Heritage Museum questioned identity and existentialism, offering a platform for nearly 22 Dalit artists to express their perspectives on caste issues. [9]
The 2023 edition of the Vaanam Art Festival, curated by director Pa Ranjith's Neelam Cultural Centre, took place in April, coinciding with the birth month of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Dalit History Month. The month-long festival featured a diverse range of activities, including a book exhibition, the PK Rosy Film Festival, the Niththam Art and Photography Exhibition, [10] the Dhamma Theatre Festival, and the Verchol Dalit Literary Festival. [11] Notably, the festival aimed to provide a platform for subaltern youth to engage actively in political thought and discourse. [12] The events took place at accessible locations in Chennai, challenging conventional associations with the upper caste glare. The Niththam exhibition showcased the everyday lives of subaltern individuals through the lens of photography, with contributions from around 40 artists, including first-time photographers from Nepal, Maharashtra, and Kerala. The literary festival featured panels moderated by young, first-time writers, fostering vibrant discussions on writing and philosophy. [11]
Poet and assistant director Viduthalai Sigappi, associated with filmmaker Pa Ranjith, faced legal action for reciting a satirical poem titled 'Malakkuzhi Maranam' (deaths in manholes) during the Vaanam Arts Festival. [13] The poem, addressed the issue of manual scavenging deaths. The Bharath Hindu Munnani, a right-wing outfit, filed a complaint, leading to the Tamil Nadu police registering an FIR against Sigappi. Neelam Cultural Centre defended Sigappi, emphasizing that the poem aimed to draw attention to societal ignorance about manual scavenging deaths and was not intended to insult religious beliefs. The controversy sparked condemnation from various quarters, with support for Sigappi coming from individuals like actor Kalaiyarasan, Sriperumbudur MLA K Selvaperunthagai, filmmaker Lenin Bharathi, writer-activist Shalin Maria Lawrence, and director Shan. The culture of Chennai, popularly called the "Gateway to the South India", is distinct from that of any other Indian city. Being a cosmopolitan hub, the city's culture reflects its diverse population that has resulted in a unique blend. Though a modern metropolis, Chennai continues to be traditional and conventional in certain ways. Traditional music, dance and all other art forms of Tamil Nadu are very popular in the city. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi formerly known as the Dalit Panthers of India or the Dalit Panthers Iyyakkam is an Indian social movement and political party that seeks to combat caste based discrimination, active in the state of Tamil Nadu. The party also has a strong emphasis on Tamil nationalism. Its chairman is Thol. Thirumavalavan, a lawyer from Chennai and its general secretary is the writer Ravikumar.

Diwan Bahadur Rettamalai Srinivasan, commonly known as R. Srinivasan, was a Scheduled Caste activist and politician from then Madras Presidency of British India. He is a Paraiyar icon and was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and was also an associate of B. R. Ambedkar. He is remembered today as one of the pioneers of the Scheduled caste movement in India. This literature encompasses various Indian languages such as Marathi, Bangla, Hindi, Kannada, Punjabi, Sindhi, Odia and Tamil and includes diverse narratives like poems, short stories, and autobiographies. The movement originated in response to the caste-based social injustices in mid-twentieth-century independent India and has since spread across various Indian languages, critiquing caste practices and experimenting with different literary forms.
Parai also known as Thappattai or Thappu is a traditional percussion instrument from South India. It is a traditional instrument used to make announcements and played during festivals, folk dances, weddings and functions. The instrument in played predominantly by Tamil people in Tamil Nadu and other regions with significant Tamil diaspora such as Sri Lanka. There are many variants of the instrument, but generally consists of a drum made of wood, open on one side and closed with a stretched animal hide on the other side along with two wooden sticks used for beating the drum.
Blue Star is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language sports drama film directed by S. Jayakumar in his directorial debut and jointly produced by Pa. Ranjith under his production banner Neelam Productions along with R. Ganesh Murthy and G. Soundarya under Lemon Leaf Creation Pvt Ltd. The film stars Ashok Selvan as the main protoganist, with Keerthi Pandian, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Prithvi Rajan, Bagavathi Perumal, Elango Kumaravel and Lizzie Antony in supporting roles, and Saju Navodaya in an extended cameo. The film features music composed by Govind Vasantha with cinematography handled by Thamizh A. Azhagan and editing done by Selva R. K. It was released on 24 January 2024 to positive reviews from critics.

Pa. Ranjith is an Indian film director, screenwriter and film producer who primarily works in Tamil cinema. He made his directorial debut with the 2012 romantic comedy Attakathi, before earning unanimously positive reviews for his second film, the political action-drama Madras (2014). He wrote and directed the action-drama films Kabali in 2016 and Kaala in 2018, both starring Rajinikanth.

The film follows Pariyan (Kathir), who belongs to an oppressed caste and enters into law college with a lot of hope, and strikes up a friendship with Jothi Mahalakshmi (Anandhi), who belongs to an upper caste, which irks Jothi's family members. He wakes up to the realities of caste oppression and discrimination, after being harassed by them.
The Casteless Collective is an Indian indie band based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The band was formed in 2017, with support from the Neelam Panpaatu Maiyam started by filmmaker Pa. Ranjith and filmmaker and film composer Tenma, founder of the label Madras Records.
Dalit History Month is an annual observance as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the Dalits or Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. It is celebrated in April all over the world by Ambedkarites, followers of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Discussions, storytelling, history projects, special publications in media, and art works are organized during this month. The Canadian Province of British Columbia recognized April as Dalit History Month.
Dalit Film and Cultural festival (DALIFF) is an international Film festival dedicated to Dalit-Bahujan cinema. This festival gives platform to content from dalit issues victimised by caste discrimination and often ignored by mainstream. First Dalit Film and Cultural festival was held in New York City in February 2019. Various films by Ambedkarite Dalit artists were screened.The Hollywood Reporter stated that the first Dalit Film Festival victoriously unspooled in New York."
Ambedkarism is the name given to the teaching, ideology or philosophy of B.R. Ambedkar, an Indian economist, barrister, social reformer, and the first of Minister of Law and Justice in the first cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru. Ambedkarism includes special focus on subjects such as fraternity, democracy, communal electorates, conversion out of Hinduism, political power, rule of law, Navayana, among others. An Ambedkarite is one who follows the philosophy of Ambedkar. Prominent followers of Ambedkarite ideology include Periyar and Jyotirao Phule among others.
The 2019 Ponparappi violence happened on April 18, 2019, during the polling day for the 2019 Indian general election in the village of Ponparappi, Tamil Nadu. The violence reportedly started as scuffles and agitations between the supporters of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the members of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) together with the members of Hindu Munnani, which reportedly led to violence by the members of the PMK on a Dalit colony. 60 to115 Dalit houses were damaged and Dalits were assaulted.
Somnath Waghmare is an Indian documentary filmmaker based in the state of Maharashtra. His most prominent and most recent film, Battle of Bhima Koregaon, was critically received and screened in India and abroad. Till now, all his films have been documentary films and they have dealt with various social issues like the persecution of women and Dalit assertion in Maharashtra. Sarpatta Parambarai, or simply Sarpatta, is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language period sports action film directed by Pa. Ranjith, who also co-produced the film under his banner Neelam Productions, along with Shanmugam Dhakshanaraj of K9 Studios. The film stars Arya, John Kokken, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Dushara Vijayan, Pasupathy, Anupama Kumar and Sanchana Natarajan. Set in the 1970s, the film revolves around a clash between two clans namely Idiyappa Parambarai and Sarpatta Parambarai in North Chennai, which also showcases the boxing culture in the locality and the politics involved in it.
Malvika Raj A former Indian model and film actress, Malavika Raaj started her career as a model and rose to fame with her participation in Femina Miss India content in 2010. She made her debut on the silver screen as a child actress with the super hit film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) where she played the role of Pooja, the younger version of Kareena Kapoor. He made significant contributions to the field of Tamil literature, theatre, and folklore, addressing the issues faced by marginalized communities, including Dalits, tribal people, transgender people, and other backward classes.
