Valerie Rose Cagle (born January 7,2002) is an American softball pitcher and utility player for the Clemson Tigers. She was named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2023.
On December 4,2018,Cagle signed with Clemson as part of their inaugural class for 2020. [1] During her freshman year in 2020,Cagle started all 27 games,including a team-high 13 starts as pitcher,in a season that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She hit .376,with 10 home runs,five doubles and an ACC best 36 RBIs. She was the only freshman in the country with 10 home runs. [2]
During her redshirt freshman year in 2021,she was one of two Clemson players to start all 52 games. She sit .404 in,with 43 runs,12 doubles,one triple,17 home runs,a slugging percentage of .821 and an on-base percentage of .492. She led the team in hits (63),RBIs (45),walks (27),home runs (17),doubles (12),batting average (.404) and slugging percentage (.821). She posted a 28–7 record,with a 1.16 ERA,and five saves. She led the ACC in ERA,tied for first in saves,ranked second in strikeouts (267),second in wins (28),second in games started (32),and third in appearances (40). [2] Following an outstanding season,she was named ACC Freshman of the Year,ACC Player of the Year,a first-team All-ACC selection and All-ACC Freshman team. [3] She was also named a second-team All-American,and a finalist for NFCA National Freshman of the Year and USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She became the first player in ACC history to be named league Player and Freshman of the Year in the same season,and the first All-American in program history. [4] [5]
During her redshirt sophomore year in 2022,she posted a 16–9 record,with a 1.92 ERA,and three saves in 32 appearances. She led the ACC in wins (16),complete games (16) and shutouts (7) and led the team with 176 strikeouts. She batted .308,with 10 doubles,one triple,13 home runs,44 RBIs and 34 runs scored. [2] Following the season she was named first-team All-ACC and first-team All-American. [6]
During her redshirt junior year in 2023,she posted a 25–8 record,with a 1.56 ERA,in 38 appearances with 188 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .182 average. She led the Tigers with a .469 average,a .887 slugging percentage and .565 on-base percentage,and led the ACC in RBIs (57),batting average,hits,on-base percentage,slugging percentage and total bases. She set a program record with 83 hits including 19 home runs and 15 doubles,and drew a program record 36 walks. [7] [8] On March 8,2023,she pitched the first perfect game in program history in a game against Mercer. She retired all 15 batters she faced with just 51 pitches,and recorded eight strikeouts and 40 total strikes,as the Tigers won 18–0 in five innings via a mercy rule. [9] Following an outstanding season,she was named ACC Player of the Year,first-team All-ACC and first-team All-American. Jenny Louise Topping is an American,former collegiate four-time first team All-American,medal winning Olympian,retired professional All-Star softball player. Topping played college softball at Washington and Cal State Fullerton primarily as a catcher. She is best known for being a member of the United States women's national softball team at the 2004 Summer Olympics that won a gold medal. She also played professionally in the National Pro Fastpitch for the Akron Racers.
Kyle James Parker is an American former professional baseball left fielder. Parker was highly regarded during his prep career as both a baseball and football player and chose to attend Clemson University to play both sports. After redshirting during his freshman season,Parker spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as the starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers football team. He was also an integral part of the school's baseball team. Parker was drafted by the Colorado Rockies as the 26th overall pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft and made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with them in 2014.
Keilani Johanna Ricketts Tumanuvao is an American softball pitcher for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF). She played college softball at Oklahoma from 2010 to 2013,where she was the starting pitcher and helped to lead the Sooners to the national championship in 2013. As a member of the United States women's national softball team she won 2011 World Cup of Softball. Ricketts currently plays for the USSSA Pride in the National Pro Fastpitch. She is the Sooners career leader in wins and strikeouts. She also ranks for career records in both the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA Division I,where she is one three players to win 100 games with 1,000 strikeouts and hit 50 home runs.
Clemson Tigers softball joined the Atlantic Coast Conference as a Division I varsity program in 2020. In November 2017,former Stanford coach John Rittman was named as Clemson's first head softball coach. Rittman spent the previous two years as an assistant coach at Kansas and USA Softball.
Sydney Joy Romero is a Mexican American professional softball player and current assistant coach for Oregon. She previously played college softball for the Oklahoma Sooners,where she set numerous program records and led the Sooners to four consecutive Women's College World Series appearances from 2016 to 2019,and won the national championship as a Freshman in 2016 and Sophomore in 2017. She played professionally for the USSSA Pride of National Pro Fastpitch. She represented Mexico at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Rachel Lauren Garcia is an American former softball pitcher. She most recently served as the pitching coach for UC San Diego. She played college softball for the UCLA Bruins and led the Bruins to the 2019 Women's College World Series championship,where she was named the Most Outstanding Player.
The 2021 Clemson Tigers softball team is the varsity college softball team that represented Clemson University during the 2021 NCAA Division I softball season. This was the second season of Clemson's softball program. The Tigers competed in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and were led by head coach John Rittman. Clemson played its home games at McWhorter Stadium in Clemson,South Carolina.
Jocelyn Aloha Pumehana Alo is an American professional softball player for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF). She played college softball for the Oklahoma Sooners. Alo was named 2018 NFCA National Freshman of the Year,and named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022. She is the NCAA Division I career leader in home runs. Alo was drafted first overall by the Smash It Vipers in the inaugural WPF draft.
Alex Ryann Storako is an American softball pitcher for the Oklahoma City Spark of Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF). She played college softball for Michigan and Oklahoma. As a junior in 2021,she set a Michigan program record with 22 strikeouts in a game and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
Tiare Rose Jennings is an American former college softball player for the Oklahoma Sooners. As a freshman in 2021,she was named NFCA National Freshman of the Year and Softball America Freshman of the Year. While at Oklahoma she won the Women's College World Series championship four consecutive years.
Maya Ann Brady-Timmons is an American college softball player for the UCLA Bruins. As a freshman in 2020,she was named Softball America Freshman of the Year.
Jayda Coleman is an American professional softball player for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP). She played college softball at Oklahoma where she won the Women's College World Series championship four consecutive years. She also represented the United States at the 2019 U-19 Women's Softball World Cup and USA Softball International Cup.
Amanda Lorenz is an American professional softball player and member of the United States women's national softball team. She played college softball at Florida,where she was named NFCA National Freshman of the Year in 2016. Following her college career,she played professionally for USSSA Pride.
