The Vampire is a jet-propelled car that currently holds the outright British land speed record, driven by Colin Fallows to a speed of 300.3 mph (483.3 km/h) on 5 July 2000 at Elvington, Yorkshire, England. [1]

Vampire is one of two near-identical dragsters built to be raced at the Santa Pod Raceway in 1980, the other being named Hellbender. [2] Measuring 30 feet (9.1 m) long, it consumes between 7 and 10 UK gallons of fuel per mile and delivers 2,500 pounds of thrust without the afterburner or 5,500 pounds of thrust with it lit.

The vehicle is powered by a Rolls-Royce Orpheus turbojet engine [3] from an ex-Red Arrows Folland Gnat paired to the afterburner from a Jaguar fighter's Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour turbofan. [2] It can accelerate from standstill to 272 mph (438 km/h) in six seconds, a personal best set at Santa Pod Raceway.

Vampire was originally constructed by Allan 'Bootsie' Herridge, a pioneer British drag racer, as one of a pair of identical match-race jet dragsters in 1981. [4] The sister car "Hellbender" was involved in a crash in 1986 at Santa Pod, in which Mark Woodley (an experienced dragster driver) was killed. [5] [3]

Vampire crashed in 2006 during shooting of a segment for the television show Top Gear , severely injuring its driver, Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond. The accident occurred as a result of a loss of control caused by a failure in the front-right wheel. Hammond's peak speed from several test runs was higher than the official British land speed record, recording a top speed of 314 mph (505 km/h). [6] However, he did not officially break the British record as, according to the rules, two runs in different directions and an independent observer are required. Hammond crashed on his seventh run. Hammond's co-presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, joked that Hammond would have created the record for the fastest crash but would have needed to repeat the crash in the opposite direction. [7]

In December 2007, the damaged vehicle went up for sale as scrap on eBay UK. [8]

After an extensive restoration and recommissioning, Vampire made its first appearance since the 2006 crash at the Bromyard Speed Festival at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in August 2021. [9]

In January 2022, DriveTribe published a video on their YouTube channel saying goodbye to 2021 and ahead to 2022, when at the end of the video Richard Hammond got into Vampire once again. [10] A week later, DriveTribe published a follow-up video where Mike Fernie, their content editor, started up Vampire. [2]

Santa Pod Raceway is Europe's first permanent drag racing venue for 1⁄4 mile and 1⁄8 mile racing. Located in Podington, Bedfordshire, England, the drag strip was built on a disused Second World War Royal Air Force (RAF) airbase, known as RAF Podington; once used by the USAAF's 92nd Bomb Group. Series 9 of Top Gear, a British motoring magazine and factual television programme, was broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC Two during 2007, and consisted of six episodes that were aired between 28 January and 4 March. Production on the series was delayed by several months when Richard Hammond was seriously injured after crashing the Vampire dragster racer whilst filming for the show; the first episode, which welcomed him back, showed the footage of this crash. This series was the first to introduce feature-length specials focused on road trips with motoring challenges, with other highlights including the presenters attempting to build a Space Shuttle with a Reliant Robin, creating home-made stretch limos, and reaching top speed in the Bugatti Veyron.

Bloodhound LSR, formerly Bloodhound SSC, is a British land vehicle designed to travel at supersonic speeds with the intention of setting a new world land speed record. The arrow-shaped car, under development since 2008, is powered by a jet engine and will be fitted with an additional rocket engine. The initial goal is to exceed the current speed record of 763 mph (1,228 km/h), with the vehicle believed to be able to achieve up to 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h).

An aero-engined car is an automobile powered by an engine designed for aircraft use. Most such cars have been built for racing, and many have attempted to set world land speed records. While the practice of fitting cars with aircraft engines predates World War I by a few years, it was most popular in the interwar period between the world wars when military-surplus aircraft engines were readily available and used to power numerous high-performance racing cars. Initially powered by piston aircraft engines, a number of post-World War II aero-engined cars have been powered by aviation turbine and jet engines instead. <span class="mw-page-title-main">European Drag Racing Championship</span>

The European Drag Racing Championship is a combination of four Drag Racing categories that have competed in six events since 1996. The European Drag Racing Season is held from May to September in four countries; UK, Sweden, Finland and Germany. Each drag race category pairs two drivers that compete against each other and the winner is the racer with the lowest reaction time and elapsed time over a designated destination. The drivers are adjudicated points for their performance at each stage which are tallied for a given season.
