Varrio Nuevo Estrada, also known as VNEx3, [3] [4] [5] is a Chicano criminal street gang founded in Boyle Heights, California, in the Estrada Courts housing projects. VNE is one of 34 gangs in a 15-square-mile area east of downtown Los Angeles.

History

Varrio Nuevo Estrada formed in the housing project community of Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights after the government relocated many poor families into the area in the early 1940s. [1] Today VNE is still one of the most prominent Hispanic gangs in eastside of Los Angeles. [1]

Location

Varrio Nuevo Estrada has expanded to other local communities such as East Los Angeles, Montebello, and Lancaster. VNE cliques include the Tiny Winos, Tiny Locos, Devils, Ninos, Chicos, Cutdowns, Dukes, Tiny Dukes, Tiny Gangsters, Termites, Santos, Spantos, and Malos in Estrada Courts, Tick Tocks, and Tiny Locos in Montebello, Primos in Lancaster and Rosamond and Southill which sits in parts of Montebello, Bell Gardens and Downey. They are primarily a Los Angeles County gang and there is no validated evidence of subgroups outside of Southern California.

Culture

Varrio Nuevo Estrada places great admiration on those that have died in the Varrio. One well known example of this is the mural in memory of one such VNE member located at 3328 Hunter Street in Boyle Heights. [6] The artist, Daniel Martinez, painted the mural in 1973. Like many other gangs they place a great deal of importance on respect, loyalty and trustworthiness. They have old ties to the Mexican Mafia and unite under the Sureño banner in the California Prison System despite of rivalries.

Criminal activity

Varrio Nuevo Estrada is so notorious that the Los Angeles City Attorney petitioned the court for a permanent gang injunction against them on November 15, 2004. [7] Even with the gang injunction, VNE continues to exert influence in their respective territories. They are still involved in a variety of criminal activities from murder, [8] arms trafficking, drug sales to drive-by shootings, assaults and various other petty crimes. [9] Like most other street gangs, Varrio Nuevo Estrada gets the majority of its income from street level narcotics distribution.

Estrada Courts is a low-income housing project in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, California. It is located between E. Olympic Blvd. on the south and E. 8th St. on the north, and S. Lorena St. on the east and S. Grande Vista Ave. on the west.

A civil gang injunction or CGI is a type of restraining order issued by courts in the United States prohibiting gang members in particular cities from participating in certain specified activities. It is based on the legal theory that gang activity constitutes a public nuisance that can prevent non–gang members of the community from enjoying peace and public order. An injunction is obtained against the gang itself, after which the police and district attorney may decide against whom they will enforce it upon. Law enforcement use gang injunctions as a tool to label people as gang members and restrict their activities in a defined area (ACLU).

Avenues (gang) Mexican-American street gang

The Avenues, also known as Avenidas or AVE's, is a Mexican/Mexican American criminal street gang mostly in Los Angeles County, California. They originally started as a social club for local Latino youths to protect themselves from other violent youths. The Avenues, like most Mexican gangs in Los Angeles, are under the direct control of the Mexican Mafia when sent to State, County, or Federal prisons.

Sureños ‍, Southern United Raza, Sur 13 or Sureños X3 are groups of loosely affiliated gangs that pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia while in U.S. state and federal correctional facilities. Many Sureño gangs have rivalries with one another, and the only time this rivalry is set aside is when they enter the prison system. Thus, fighting is common among different Sureño gangs even though they share the same common identity. Sureños have emerged as a national gang in the United States.

Barriox13, Barrio13, B13 in short, is a street gang in South Los Angeles consisting of over 5000 members, many of which are active. It is divided into West Side Barriox13 and East Side Barriox13 gang with all members loyal to the Barriox13 gang. It was established in the early 1970s near El Segundo Boulevard and Main St in South Los Angeles, California. The Original group of Barriox13 gang members began the gang for self-protection. It is a South Side (Sureno) gang loyal to the Mexican Mafia prison gang.

Santa Monica 13 or SMG is a Mexican-American street gang located in Santa Monica, California, United States. They reside mainly in the Pico neighborhood. Even though Santa Monica 13 is a Sureño gang, they wear their traditional black bandanas. The acronym SM17 refers to Santa Monica 17th Street, which is the gang's primary subset or "clique". They write up "SMG" or "Santa Monica Gang" to show solidarity.

Playboys 13 Gang, also known by the short name PBS13, is a predominantly Mexican-American street gang in West and East Los Angeles, California. The gang sometimes uses the name Conejo or Rabbit gang. They align themselves with the Mexican Mafia, also known as La eme, while in prison and set aside their rivalry with other Sureño gangs.
