Veal is a Canadian indie rock band with country music influences. Originally based in Vancouver, the band later moved to Toronto, Ontario.
Veal was formed in Vancouver [1] in 1994. The band included guitarist Luke Doucet, [2] and drummer Chang. Early bassists in Veal include Howard Redekopp and Barry Mirochnick. In 1996 the group released their first album, Hot Loser . [3] [4]
The band played a showcase at Canadian Music Week in Toronto in 1999. [5] That year they released a second album, Tilt O'Whirl , which was recorded in Vancouver but mixed in Toronto. The band signed with music promoter Shauna de Cartier, who formed Six Shooter Records in order to release the band's work. [6] The album was included in CBC RadioSonic's best of 1998 broadcast." Bassist Nik Kozub, (now of Shout Out Out Out Out), later joined the band.
Doucet began a solo career in 2001 with the release of his album Aloha, Manitoba ; he continued to perform and record with Veal. [7] The band released a third album in 2003, The Embattled Hearts . [8]
Hot Hot Heat was a Canadian indie rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, formed in 1999. The band was signed by Seattle label Sub Pop in 2001 and released its first EP, Knock Knock Knock, and first full-length album, Make Up the Breakdown, the following year. The band released five full-length albums, the last being the self-titled Hot Hot Heat in 2016. The band's style makes use of electronic and traditional instruments and has variously been categorized as dance-punk, post-punk revival, new wave, and art-punk. They made an appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba, with the song, "Time to go Outdoors". It was featured on the "Talent" episode.

Wintersleep is a Canadian indie rock band formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2001. Based in Halifax, the band's original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Murphy, guitarist and keyboardist Tim d'Eon, and drummer Loel Campbell. In 2002, Jud Haynes joined the band as bass guitarist until 2007. In 2005, Mike Bigelow joined the band as a keyboardist until 2006, when he then acted as a bass guitarist from 2007 to 2016. Since 2006, Jon Samuel has served as a backing vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist while has Chris Bell served as a backing vocalist and bass guitarist since 2016.
Paul Brennan is a Canadian musician. A drummer, Brennan has been a member of the Animal Slaves, Odds and Big Sugar. He has also contributed as a guest musician on albums by Meryn Cadell, Sarah McLachlan, Taste of Joy, Julie Ann Bertram and Mae Moore. He is currently playing with Alannah Myles and Jordan Paul and performing locally in Toronto.
Luke Doucet is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has written and performed as a solo artist and as a member of the indie rock band Veal and the folk rock band Whitehorse.
Melissa McClelland is an American-born Canadian singer-songwriter who lived in Hamilton, Ontario, in her youth and now bases her career from Toronto, Ontario. McClelland's music is influenced by blues and Americana. A writer on CMJ's staff blog wrote that McClelland has "a persona reminiscent of a female Tom Waits."

Hardcore historian Steven Blush said that the term "hardcore" is also a reference to the sense of being "fed up" with the existing punk and new wave music. Blush also states that the term refers to "an extreme: the absolute most Punk." One definition of the genre is "a form of exceptionally harsh punk rock."
