Velina Hasu Houston (born Velina Avisa Hasu Houston on May 5, 1957) [1] is an American writer. Primarily an internationally acclaimed playwright [2] and librettist, she is also a published poet, screenwriter for film and television, [3] and essayist. [4]
Her work draws from her experience of being multiracial as well as from the immigrant experiences of her family, her multi-ethnicity, and intersection of culture, race, gender, and region. [5]
Houston is best known for her play Tea, which portrays the lives of Japanese international brides, often known as war brides, who move to the United States with their U.S. American serviceman husbands who are of varied racial backgrounds. Tea had its professional premiere Off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in 1987, and was designated by Roundabout Theatre as an American theatre canon classic. [6] Since its premiere, the play continues to be produced globally. The Los Angeles Female Playwrights Institute referred to Tea as "one of the most widely produced Asian American plays worldwide." [7]
Houston, the youngest of three, was born in international waters outside of Japan on a U.S. military ship. Her Japanese mother, Setsuko Takechi, was originally from Matsuyama, Ehime, a provincial town on Shikoku Island. [8] Her father, Lemo Houston, was an African-American, Blackfoot-Pikuni Native American, Spanish, and Portuguese man originally from Linden, Alabama. [9]
In 1946, the parents of Velina met each other in Kobe, initiating a nine-year courtship despite disapproval from Velina's maternal grandfather. The grandfather, devastated by his country's defeat in World War II and the loss of his family's land due to the land reform policies backed by the U.S. occupation, died by suicide. Following their marriage, the couple eventually had little contact with both sides of their respective families. The family settled in Junction City, Kansas, a small town adjacent to the military base, living a culturally Japanese lifestyle at the insistence of Velina's mother, Setsuko. [10]
In 1969, as a result of combat-related stress and alcoholism, Velina's father died. [11] Setsuko continued raising her family in Junction City. She died in 2022 at the age of 93. [12]
Houston attended graduate school at the University of California at Los Angeles and at the University of Southern California. She holds a PhD from USC's School of Cinematic Arts, [13] and an MFA from the University of California at Los Angeles' School of Theater, Film, and Television. [14] She also attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, majoring in journalism and theater with a minor in philosophy. [15] She is a Phi Beta Kappa. [16]
Houston serves as a Distinguished Professor of Theatre in Dramatic Writing at the USC School of Dramatic Arts and is USC's Resident Playwright. [17] She is on the Board of Trustees of Berklee College in Boston. [18]
Houston has been married to Peter Henry Jones of Manchester, England, since 2002, and resides in Los Angeles, California. [19] She has two children, Kiyoshi and Leilani. [20]
Houston has been recognized as a Japan Foundation Fellow, [21] a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow, [22] a Sidney F. Brody Fellow, [23] a James Zumberge Fellow (thrice), a California Arts Council fellow, a Los Angeles Endowment for the Arts Fellow, and a Doris Duke Charitable Foundation fellow; in addition, she was a co-recipient of a fellowship from the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Little Tokyo, also known as Little Tokyo Historic District, is an ethnically Japanese American district in downtown Los Angeles and the heart of the largest Japanese-American population in North America. It is the largest and most populous of only three official Japantowns in the United States, all of which are in California. Founded around the beginning of the 20th century, the area, sometimes called Lil' Tokyo, J-Town, Shō-Tōkyō (小東京), is the cultural center for Japanese Americans in Southern California. It was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1995.
The Rafu Shimpo is a Japanese-English language newspaper based in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California and is the largest bilingual English-Japanese daily newspaper in the United States. As of February 2021, it is published online daily. In print publication is only on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Wakako Yamauchi was a Japanese American writer. Her plays are considered pioneering works in Asian-American theater.

The Pan Asian Repertory Theatre is a New York City-based theatre group that explores the Asian-American experience and provides professional opportunities for Asian-American artists to collaborate. Pan-Asian was founded by Tisa Chang and Ernest Abuba in 1977, and Chang remains artistic director. Chang established the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre as a resident company at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in 1977, with the intention of popularizing Asian-American theater and leading to other similar theatre companies in cities with an Asian disaporic population.
The Asian American Theater Company(AATC) is a non-profit theatre performance company based in San Francisco. Its stated mission is "To connect people to Asian American culture through Theatre". The company's main stage productions are new plays and revivals of classics by Asian Pacific Islander American playwrights, directed, performed, and designed by local talent. Most scripts are developed at AATC and each are presented at various venues around the Bay Area with full-production runs.
Genevieve (Genny) Lim is an American poet, playwright, and performer. She is currently serving as the ninth poet laureate of San Francisco, California, and she is the first Chinese American poet to serve in this role. She served as the Chair of Community Arts and Education Committee, and as Chair of the Advisory Board for the San Francisco Writers Corps. She has performed with Max Roach, Herbie Lewis, Francis Wong, and Jon Jang among others in San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Houston and Chicago.
Soji Kashiwagi is a Sansei journalist, playwright and producer. He is the Executive Producer for the Grateful Crane Ensemble theatre company in Los Angeles. He has contributed to The Rafu Shimpo with his column, "Corner Store." He is the son of Nisei playwright Hiroshi Kashiwagi.
Dmae Roberts, aka D. Roberts, is a Taiwanese-American independent public radio producer, writer, actress and playwright. Much of her work focuses on cross-cultural issues or personal storytelling. Roberts was born in Taipei, Taiwan and grew up in Japan until she was eight. Her family moved to Junction City, Oregon when she was 10 years old. Roberts moved to Eugene, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.S. in journalism. Roberts relocated to Portland in 1989 to pursue her acting career while continuing to do her national radio work. She is executive producer of the nonprofit MediaRites. She is a member and former board member of the Association of Independents in Radio as well as a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.
Lia Chang is an American actress, journalist, and photographer. After beginning her career modeling and acting in New York and on tour, Chang added parallel careers as a portrait and botanical photographer and journalist.
Yuriko Doi is a stage director, choreographer, performer and former founding artistic director of Theatre of Yugen. Doi specializes in the fusion of traditional Japanese dramatic arts with modern world theater.
Frances Kazuko Hashimoto was an American businesswoman, schoolteacher, and social activist. She was a key figure and proponent of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo neighborhood. She was the head of Mikawaya confectionery company since 1970, where Hashimoto, the inventor of mochi ice cream, also introduced the dessert to American consumers.
Denise Uyehara is an American performance artist, director and writer. Her interdisciplinary and solo performances and installations examine and explore memory, time-travel, immigration, race, sexuality, and gender. She is the founding member of the performance group Sacred Naked Nature Girls, a group of four women of different ethnicities and sexual orientation, who use their bodies as a means to construct identities and inspire dialogue. Her work is internationally recognized and has been featured in exhibitions in Los Angeles, Helsinki, London, Tokyo, and Vancouver. She is also the author of two full-length plays, Hobbies and Hiro. Uyehara is a fellow of the Asian Cultural Council.
Sakaye Shigekawa was an American physician who specialized in obstetrics. Born to Japanese-American parents, she was imprisoned and forced to live and work at an internment camp in California, providing medical care to fellow Japanese-American internees during World War II. She completed her training in Chicago before returning to Los Angeles in 1948, where she practiced for more than 50 years.

Esther Takei Nishio was an American woman from California, incarcerated at the Granada War Relocation Center in Colorado during World War II. She was the first Japanese-American student to enroll in a California university after returning from camp, in 1944, when she was chosen as a test case for resettlement.
Momoko Iko (1940–2020) was a Japanese-American playwright, best known for her 1972 play Gold Watch. She was also a founding member of the Asian Liberation Organization and the Pacific Asian American Women Writers West.
Takayo "Rose" Matsui Ochi was a Japanese-American attorney and civil rights activist notable for fighting for the approval of the Manzanar to become a National Historic Site and being the first Asian American woman to be appointed at the United States Assistant Attorney General level by President Bill Clinton. She was also the first Asian American to be appointed to the Los Angeles Police Commission.
