Vidyakar Kavi

Vidyakar Kavi (1923 - 31 January 1986) was an Indian politician and social worker from Bihar. He was the former Education and Road Construction Minister of Bihar. He served as the president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee. Kavi participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and started his career as a teacher. He served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council from 1957 to 1967 and later represented Alamnagar Assembly constituency from 1967 to 1977. Under his leadership, the education system of Bihar was strengthened. He died in 1986 due to cardiac arrest.^[1]^[2]^[3]

Biography

He was born in 1923 in Alamnagar, Madhepura district, in an elite family. His father, Manmohan Kavi, was a scholar of the Braj Bhasha.^[1]

He started his career as a teacher in a high school in Alamnagar. In 1953, he left teaching to become engaged in politics. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and held positions such as the President of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee and a cabinet member. He was a member of the Bihar Legislative Council from 1957 to 1967 and represented Alamnagar from 1967 to 1977. He served as the Education Minister and Road Construction Minister during this time. In 1969, when the Congress Party was not doing well in the state, he was made the President of the State Congress Committee. He was known for speaking his mind and not being afraid to criticize his own government.^[1]

The government of Bihar established the Vidyakar Kavi Literary Award in his honour and a library and inter-college were established posthumously in his name in Alamnagar. While in charge of the irrigation department as minister, he also implemented policies during a Patna flood crisis in 1970s that helped the city recover and prevented future damage. He was appointed as the first official language minister of Bihar.^[1]

He had been a Mukhiya of Chitaukhar-Jalalpur Panchayat for almost 25 years. First he became an MLA in 1980 while being in Lok Dal party. He was elected in 1995 as a member of Janata Dal. Yadav started his political career in 1957 as an Independent candidate from Tikari constituency but lost. Later this constituency named as Konch, now again becomes Tikari constituency from 2010 onwards. He also fought from here as a candidate of Indian National Congress in 1967 but lost to U. N. Verma of Samyukta Socialist Party and in 1969 lost to Ram Balav Saran Singh.

He was the Union Minister for State, Rural Development in 1989-90 in the cabinet of Vishwanath Pratap Singh. Verma was a distinguished social reformer and author, who published numerous works on the social issues prevalent in Indian society. In his political career, he was associated with Samyukta Socialist Party besides Janata Dal and has served as Minister of Education and Revenue in Government of Bihar in 1967 and 1977 respectively.

Mohan Lal Verma was a leader of Indian independence movement and a lifelong follower of Mahatma Gandhi. After independence he was appointed as MLC - Member of the State Legislative Council from Hardoi constituency from 1948 to 1952. After this tenure he also served the district of Hardoi for a decade as MLA- Member of the Legislative Assembly for two consecutive terms from 1957 to 1967. He won his first MLA election from Sandila constituency in 1957 and again in 1962 from erstwhile Gondwa constituency. Even after his political career he continued to serve the people of Hardoi and bring development to the district until his death.

Surender Sharma is an Indian poet, writer and humorist. He often writes and performs comic sketches of himself and his wife and known for his refrain chaar lainaa suna raha hoon in Haryanavi dialect. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2013, with the award of Padma Shri for his contributions to the field of literature.

N.P. Choudhary was an Indian politician and member of the Indian National Congress party. He represented Patan. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member continuously from 1968 to 1980. He represented the state of Madhya Pradesh. He served as a Mayor in Jabalpur Nagar Nigam.

Om Prakash Lal, popularly known as O.P Lal, was an Indian politician who served as a Cabinet Minister, Minister of State (MoS) with Independent Charges and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Vidhan Sabha of Government of Bihar. He represented the Baghmara constituency of Jharkhand, then part of undivided Bihar, for three consecutive terms from 1985 to 2000. Lal made significant contributions to the fields of Excise & Probation, Mines & Geology, Tourism, and Information Technology during his political career.

Ram Narayan Chaudhary is an Indian politician from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. He was elected as member of Rajasthan legislative assembly for seven terms. He was a senior Jat leader of Indian National Congress from Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. He served as president of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee from 1980 to 1982. He also served as Deputy Speaker of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. He also served as cabinet minister in Government of Rajasthan.
