Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman (c 1797 - 4 June 1825) was the ruler of the princely state of Pudukkottai from 1 February 1807 to 4 June 1825.

Early life

Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman was born in 1797 to Vijaya Raghunatha Tondaiman, Raja of Pudukkottai, and his second wife, Rani Ayi Ammani Ayi Sahib Avargal in Pudukkottai and was educated by a private tutor.[ citation needed ] He was the elder of two sons of Vijaya Raghunatha Tondaiman who survived him.[ citation needed ]

Reign

Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman ascended the throne on 1 February 1807 on the death of his father, Vijaya Raghunatha Tondaiman. The administration as in the hands of a Council of Superintendence headed by the Resident of Tanjore, William Blackburn till 1817, when Vijaya Raghunatha Raya attained majority. [1]

William Blackburn completely rebuilt the city with wider roads, tiled houses and public buildings. [1] A new palace was constructed for the Raja in 1825. [2] Blackburn introduced Marathi as the language of administration and it remained the official language of Pudukkottai state for seventy-five years. [1]

Death

Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman died of a mysterious illness on 4 June 1825. He was succeeded by his brother, Raghunatha Tondaiman II.[ citation needed ]

Family

In 1812, Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman married a daughter of M.R.Ry. Sri Singappuli Aiyar.[ citation needed ] He also married a second time, to a daughter of Thirumalai Panrikondran.[ citation needed ] Vijaya Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman had one son and one daughter.[ citation needed ]

Pudukkottai is the administrative headquarters of Pudukkottai District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Pudukkottai was a kingdom and later a princely state in British India, which existed from 1680 until 1948.

Sriman Hiranyagarbha Ravikula Raja Muthu Vijaya Raghunatha Raja Raghunatha Deva Kilavan Setupati was first king of Ramnad Kingdom which is also known "Maravar Kingdom". He ruled from 1673 to 1708 and oversaw the growth of the feudal chieftainship of Ramnad into powerful "Ramnad Kingdom" which is known as "Maravar Kingdom". He rescued the Nayak of Madurai from the tyranny of Rustam Khan and also successfully campaigned against the King of Thanjavur, who later ceded all his territories.

Thondaman dynasty

The Thondaman Dynasty is south Indian dynasty of chieftains who ruled the region in and around Pudukottai from the 17th to 20th century. They belong to the Kallar caste of the Thevar/Mukkulathor community. It was founded by Raghunatha Thondaiman, the brother-in-law of the then Raja of Ramnad, Raghunatha Kilavan Setupati.

Raja Sri Brahdamba Dasa Raja Sri Rajagopala Tondaiman Bahadur was the ninth and last ruler of the princely state of Pudukkottai.

Thirumayam Fort Historical landmark built by king Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi

The Thirumayam Fort is a 40-acre wide fortress in the town of Thirumayam in Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway in Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu, India. It was constructed by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad in 1687. Later the fort was handed over to his brother in law Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman. The fort has been extensively renovated by Archaeological Survey of India in 2012.
