The Andaman Sea is a marginal sea of the eastern Indian Ocean separated from the Bay of Bengal by the Andaman Islands of India and Myanmar and the Nicobar Islands of India and touching Myanmar, Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula. Its southernmost end is defined by Breueh Island, an island just north of Sumatra.

Thailand was one of the countries that was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Due to proximity of the Andaman coasts of Thailand situated just about 500 km east of the earthquake epicentre, the tsunami took just 2 hours to reach and strike the western coastline of the country. The Thai government reported 4,812 confirmed deaths, 8,457 injuries, and 4,499 missing after the country was hit by a tsunami caused by the Indian Ocean earthquake on 26 December 2004.
The Moken are an Austronesian people of the Mergui Archipelago, a group of approximately 800 islands claimed by both Burma and Thailand. Most of the 2,000 to 3,000 Moken live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle heavily based on the sea, though this is increasingly under threat.

The Mergui Archipelago is located in far southern Myanmar (Burma) and is part of the Tanintharyi Region. It consists of more than 800 islands, varying in size from very small to hundreds of square kilometres, all lying in the Andaman Sea off the western shore of the Malay Peninsula near its landward (northern) end where it joins the rest of Indochina. They are occasionally the islands are referred to as the Pashu Islands because the Malay inhabitants are locally called Pashu.

Directly adjacent to Ranong, in the south of Thailand and to King Bayint Nbung is a region famous for its gems, pearls, flora and fauna. The pier is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the Ranong city centre and it takes 20 minutes to cross the Andaman Sea to the island resort. It is owned and operated by the VES Group of Thailand, under a long-term concession from the Burmese government.
Thahtay Island, also known as Thahtay Kyun and Son Island, is a small Burmese island within the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea. The island is directly adjacent to Ranong, a city in the south of Thailand and to Kawthaung. The island has been given by the Burmese government on a long term concession to a Thailand-based VES Group for development as a tourism. Grand Andaman is a five star casino club golf resort now operating on the island.
VES Group is a holding company based in Thailand. VES is a leading investor in Burma with interests in its main industries of logging, gem mining, jewellery, pearl farming, commercial fishing and tourism. It is also involved in various construction and infrastructure projects in Burma. The group is headed by Vikrom Aisiri, a Thai businessman and politician. Aisiri also owns and operates the Andaman Club, an island casino cum golf resort on the island of Thahtay Kyun, under a concession from the Burmese government. The group also controls the Dusit Island Resort in Chiang Rai and is building a new four star hotel in Ranong. The group also has a long term eco-tourism concession on St. Lukes Island.
The Burmese–Siamese War (1785–1786), known as the Nine Armies' Wars in Siamese history because the Burmese came in nine armies, was fought between the Konbaung dynasty of Burma and the Chakri dynasty of resurgent Siam (Thailand).
Richelieu Rock is a dive site in Thailand in the Andaman Sea about 200 km northwest of Phuket. It is part of the Mu Koh Surin marine park although being about 18 km east of Surin Island.
Moklen is an Austronesian language spoken on the western coast of southern Thailand. It is related to but distinct from the Moken language of Myanmar and southern Thailand. Unlike Moken, it is not spoken in Myanmar.
The Ranong human-smuggling incident was a human smuggling tragedy in Ranong, Thailand in April 2008. 54 people suffocated to death in a tiny seafood container while being smuggled from Song Island, Myanmar, to Phuket, Thailand.
The Burmese–Siamese War (1809–1812) was an armed conflict fought between Burma and Siam, during the period of June 1809 and January 1812. The war centered over the control of the tin rich Tenasserim coast and served as the continuation of a long list of Burmese–Siamese wars. The conflict ended in a Siamese victory.

It is designed for interdiction against fast moving surface vessels and for search-and-rescue operations in coastal areas and in the exclusive economic zone. Named after Baratang in the Andaman Islands, the vessel was designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers. The diesel generators on board are supplied by Cummins India. The electronic equipment on board is from Bharat Electronics Limited, ECIL, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
