Vikrom Aisiri is a Thai businessman and politician. Aisiri is the Thai senator from Ranong province. [1] His business holdings include the VES Group, Phuket Airlines, Andaman Club, a casino cum golf resort on Thahtay Kyun Island in Burma and Dusit Island Resort in Chiang Rai. A publicity shy millionaire with a family business background in construction, Aisiri built his personal fortune as Chairman of the VES Group. VES is a major investor in Burma with interests in its main industries of logging, gem mining, pearl farming, commercial fishing and tourism. [2] The group is also rumored to be building a four star hotel in Ranong for overnight stay of tourists on their way to the Andaman Club. He is also known for his close ties with the State Peace and Development Council, the ruling military junta in Burma. Aisiri is also reported to be one of the promoters of Timor Air.

He is the owner of the legendary Norwegian coastal steamer "Kong Olav" named after King Olav V, and has become very unpopular in Norway after refusing to sell the ship back to its original country to become a veteran/museum ship. Aisiri's eccentric antics reportedly made rescue of the derelict ship impossible, and it is now in a state of disrepair.

He is a recipient of the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand. He is a commerce graduate of Chulalongkorn University.

Effect of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake on Thailand

Thailand was one of the countries that was hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Due to proximity of the Andaman coasts of Thailand situated just about 500 km east of the earthquake epicentre, the tsunami took just 2 hours to reach and strike the western coastline of the country. The Thai government reported 4,812 confirmed deaths, 8,457 injuries, and 4,499 missing after the country was hit by a tsunami caused by the Indian Ocean earthquake on 26 December 2004.

Moken ethnic group

The Moken are an Austronesian people of the Mergui Archipelago, a group of approximately 800 islands claimed by both Burma and Thailand. Most of the 2,000 to 3,000 Moken live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle heavily based on the sea, though this is increasingly under threat.

Mergui Archipelago island group

The Mergui Archipelago is located in far southern Myanmar (Burma) and is part of the Tanintharyi Region. It consists of more than 800 islands, varying in size from very small to hundreds of square kilometres, all lying in the Andaman Sea off the western shore of the Malay Peninsula near its landward (northern) end where it joins the rest of Indochina. They are occasionally the islands are referred to as the Pashu Islands because the Malay inhabitants are locally called Pashu.

Andaman Club is a five-star island casino and golf resort in Burma. It is located on 730 ha of Thahtay Kyun Island within the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea. Directly adjacent to Ranong, in the south of Thailand and to King Bayint Nbung is a region famous for its gems, pearls, flora and fauna. The pier is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the Ranong city centre and it takes 20 minutes to cross the Andaman Sea to the island resort. It is owned and operated by the VES Group of Thailand, under a long-term concession from the Burmese government.

Thahtay Kyun

Thahtay Island, also known as Thahtay Kyun and Son Island, is a small Burmese island within the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea. The island is directly adjacent to Ranong, a city in the south of Thailand and to Kawthaung. The island has been given by the Burmese government on a long term concession to a Thailand-based VES Group for development as a tourism. Grand Andaman is a five star casino club golf resort now operating on the island.

VES is a leading investor in Burma with interests in its main industries of logging, gem mining, jewellery, pearl farming, commercial fishing and tourism. It is also involved in various construction and infrastructure projects in Burma. The group is headed by Vikrom Aisiri, a Thai businessman and politician. Aisiri also owns and operates the Andaman Club, an island casino cum golf resort on the island of Thahtay Kyun, under a concession from the Burmese government. The group also controls the Dusit Island Resort in Chiang Rai and is building a new four star hotel in Ranong. The group also has a long term eco-tourism concession on St. Lukes Island.
