Viktor Rossi (born 31 October 1968) is a Swiss politician and civil servant. A member of the Green Liberal Party,he became Vice-Chancellor of Switzerland on 1 May 2019. [1] [2] On 13 December 2023,he was elected Federal Chancellor of Switzerland,succeeding Walter Thurnherr,and took office on 1 January 2024. [1]
Rossi attended primary and secondary school in the canton of Bern,apprenticed as a cook between 1984 and 1987,obtained a maturity diploma in economics at the Private school Humboldtianum in Bern,before attaining a teacher's degree in Law and Economics at Bern University in 1996. [3] [4]
After graduating,he started teaching Trade at the commercial school (BFB) in Biel,before leading the school in 1999. In parallel,he was at first vice-president of the conference of rectors of commercial schools in the Canton Bern between 2004 and 2009,then president in 2009. [3] [4] In 2015,he completed a diploma of Advanced Studies in Law at Bern University. [5]
Rossi joined the Federal Chancellery of Switzerland in October 2010,leading the Records Management and Logistics department. In 2015,he was Federal Chancellor Walter Thurnherr's delegate supervisor for the IT project GENOVA. [1] In December 2018,the Federal Council elected Rossi Vice-Chancellor of Switzerland. [6]
He took office on 1 May 2019 and has been leading the Federal Council's affairs. He entered the race to succeed Walter Thurnherr at the end of 2023 to fill the position of Chancellor of the Confederation. He was elected on 13 December. [1] His predecessor,Jörg De Bernardi,took over his post ad interim. [7]
Rossi is a native German and Italian speaker. He is married and a father of two. [6] [8]

The federal chancellor is the head of the Federal Chancellery of Switzerland,the oldest Swiss federal institution,established at the initiative of Napoleon in 1803. The officeholder acts as the general staff of the seven-member Federal Council. The Chancellor is not a member of the government and the office is not at all comparable to that of the Chancellor of Germany or the Chancellor of Austria,or to the United Kingdom's Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Hanna Muralt Müller is a Swiss politician,member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. She held the office of Vice-Chancellor of Switzerland between 1991 and 2005,in charge of the Federal Council sector,which organizes and documents the council's activities. Initially working as a school teacher,she obtained a degree in history at the University of Bern in 1976. In 1978,she worked as a scientific adviser to a parliamentary commission in the canton Bern,before joining the Federal administration in 1983. Beat Jans is a Swiss environmental scientist and politician who serves as a member of the Federal Council,after being elected in 2023 to succeed Alain Berset,assuming office on 1 January 2024. A member of the Social Democratic Party,he previously served on the National Council from 2010 to 2020,and president of the Executive Council of Basel-Stadt from 2021 to 2023.
Federal referendums were held in Switzerland on 13 February,15 May and 25 September 2022. An election for all seven members of the Federal Council,Switzerland's government,were held on 13 December 2023 for the 2024–2028 term. It followed the federal election held a month earlier and partly depended on its results.
