The Trinity College Vincent de Paul Society (stylised as trinity VDP) is a student charitable society in Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Its members volunteer in Dublin's inner city in over twenty charitable activities which are aimed at helping those in need. It is one of the largest societies in Trinity College, the largest student charity organisation in Ireland and the largest conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, with over 7,500 members. History

The Trinity de Paul Society was established in 1975. [2] Since then it has grown into one of Trinity's largest societies. [3] Its oldest activity is the Trinity Club which provides a social club for adults with intellectual disabilities. Kids' Club is another one of the longest standing activities, continuing for over 20 years. [4] The society won the award for "Best Overall Society" in Trinity College on four occasions; the most out of any society in the college. [5]

Activities

The Vincent de Paul Society runs over twenty activities.[ citation needed ] They include helping people young and old in a number of different ways. Volunteers are vetted through the Garda Síochána and go through a child protection course, provided by the National Society of St. Vincent de Paul. [6]

Some of the activities include running children's clubs (at local primary schools with fun and educational activities including art, dance, drama, music and literacy), an annual pantomime, homeless care, visitations (to elderly or people with disabilities in the local area), and flat cleaning and decorating.[ citation needed ]

Annually,[ citation needed ] as many as 75 student members also walk 110 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago. This year,[ when? ] the Camino walk raised money for TAP and Bridge 21, which are charities that work in the college to encourage educational development and provide support for students coming into the college from more disadvantaged areas. The money has in the past been donated to St. Vincent de Paul Societies in Africa. [7]

Fundraising events

The running these activities requires a team of fundraisers. Led by the Vice-President of Fundraising and aided by the fundraising subcommittee, the society organise events to raise money and awareness. In the past they have had nights out, concerts, street collection days, and bingo nights.[ citation needed ]

Membership

VDP is one of the few societies in Trinity which is free to join.[ citation needed ] Students can join any time during the academic year.[ citation needed ]

Queens University Belfast Students Union

Queen's University Belfast Students' Union (QUBSU) is the official representative body for students at Queen's University Belfast. The Piranha is the official satirical newspaper of Trinity College Dublin. Formerly known as Piranha! magazine, it was rebranded in 2009. It is a member of Trinity Publications and is written entirely by students of the university. The first edition claimed that it was established in 1843, but official college records state that the publication was founded in 1978.

Laurentian Society

The Laurentian Society is a society of Trinity College Dublin, named after Saint Laurence O'Toole, and concerned with relevant issues from a Catholic perspective. It was the Catholic society of Trinity College, and it existed with no interruptions between the academic years 1952–53 and 2001–02. During those years, the society held talks on various issues and was engaged in charitable activities. The society played an important role in opposing the ban on Catholics entering Trinity College, and was also very influential on other groups of the college, such as the G.A.A. club of Trinity. The work of this society was quoted across the Atlantic. In September 2011, the Society was revived, being granted provisional recognition by the Trinity College Central Societies Committee. The Society was granted full recognition on 19 March 2013 at the Annual General Meeting of the same Societies Committee. Since then it has steadily grown in size and has an active membership.

An Cumann Gaelach is the Irish language and culture society in the University of Dublin, Trinity College. Established in 1907 by Ireland's first president Dubhghlas de hÍde, the society is among the largest societies in Trinity College, and one of the largest Cumann Gaelach student groups in the country.
