Vintage Story is a sandbox survival game developed and published by Anego Studios. The founders of Anego Studios, Tyron and Irena Madlener, began development on a standalone version of an earlier mod for Minecraft called Vintagecraft in April 6, 2016 [1] and became available for owners of a "game key" in September 4, 2016 [2] . It became publicly available for sale in September 28, 2016. [3] An old version of the game is available for free download. [4] The game is in early access and can be played in singleplayer or multiplayer modes.
The player character is a tall humanoid, referred to as a seraph by the game and developers. Gameplay is generally focused on creating a realistic and immersive experience. Creating many items revolves around interacting with the in-game world instead of a GUI. For example, in order to create a clay bowl, players place small voxels into the shape of a bowl, which then must be fired in a pit kiln.
Other aspects of gameplay include prospecting for minerals and ores, animal husbandry, farming and building. Another focus of gameplay is exploration. Infinite worlds with realistic biomes and randomly generated structures provide an engaging player experience.
The game is written in C# using OpenTK and a fork of the ManicDigger game engine. Most of the game's programming was done by Tyron Madlener, with contributions from several contributors. A majority of the game's code is under a readable source code license on the Anego Studios GitHub. [5] Development on updates with additional features and story elements for the game is ongoing, with the latest stable version, 1.19.8, being released in May 2024. [6]
One of the most popular features of the game is its modding API, which has been praised for its flexibility and quality. [7] [8] [9]
Power Up Gaming described Vintage Story as being "on a completely different level" than other block-based survival games due to its approach to crafting and inventory management, noting that the game fixes all the "nagging problems that everyone has" in other open-world survival block-based games by allowing the player to open multiple menus at the same time and interact with items more naturally. [10] A critic found the content of Vintage Story to be a more atmospheric survival experience compared to Minecraft which he considered it "too tame". [9]
Rock Paper Shotgun praised the world generation, animations, and modding. [11] In another review Rock Paper Shotgun mostly focused on the much better performance of Vintage Story, compared to Minecraft. [12] A review by Sportskeeda praised the graphics, as well as the mineralogy. [8] Digital Trends heralded the unique gameplay and crafting system for their quality, as well as the flexibility of the game. [7]

A sandbox game is a video game with a gameplay element that provides players a great degree of creativity to interact with, usually without any predetermined goal, or with a goal that the players set for themselves. Such games may lack any objective, and are sometimes referred to as non-games or software toys. More often, sandbox games result from these creative elements being incorporated into other genres and allowing for emergent gameplay. Sandbox games are often associated with an open world concept which gives the players freedom of movement and progression in the game's world. The term "sandbox" derives from the nature of a sandbox that lets people create nearly anything they want within it.

Survival mode, or horde mode, is a game mode in a video game in which the player must continue playing for as long as possible without dying in an uninterrupted session while the game presents them with increasingly difficult waves of challenges. A variant of the mode requires that the player last for a certain finite amount of time or number of waves, after which victory is achieved and the mode ends. Survival mode has been compared to the gameplay of classic arcade games, where players face off against increasingly stronger waves of enemies. This mode was intended to give the game a definite and sometimes sudden ending, so that other players could then play the arcade game as well.
