Vinterskugge is the first full-length release by the Norwegian black metal band Isengard. It is actually a combination of three demo tapes released between 1989 and 1993, which explains the difference in sound between the releases, with the earlier recordings predating the second wave of black metal and resembling death metal more closely. Although Burzum never played live performances, it became a staple of the early Norwegian black metal scene and is considered one of the most influential acts in black metal's history. Vikernes has also released five dark ambient and neofolk albums. The word "burzum" means "darkness" in the Black Speech, a fictional language crafted by The Lord of the Rings writer J. R. R. Tolkien.
