Virginia's 12th House of Delegates district elects one of the hundred Delegates of the Virginia House of Delegates, United States.
Under redistricting effective for the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election, the 12th district number was reassigned to part of northern Virginia's Fairfax County, [1] while the district number 42, [2] previously used elsewhere in Fairfax, was applied to a new southwestern district including most of the old 12th.
The new District 12 in the Tysons and Vienna area, includes parts of the old districts 34, 35, 37, 39, 41 and 53. [3]

Before redistricting, the old 12th included the city of Radford, Giles County, and portions of Montgomery County and Pulaski County. After redistricting, most of the old 12th became part of the new 42nd district, formed from parts of the previous districts 12, 7 and 8, still including Radford City and all of Giles County, but incorporating different parts of Pulaski and Montgomery counties. Significantly, the new district no longer includes the Montgomery County town of Blacksburg, which had been home to previous Democratic delegates from the 12th, Joan Munford, Jim Shuler and Chris Hurst. Republican Jason Ballard of Pearisburg, was elected 12th district delegate in the 2021 election.[ citation needed ]

Giles County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia on the West Virginia state line. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,787. Its county seat is Pearisburg.
James Marshall Shuler is a retired American politician. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1994–2012, representing the 12th district in the western part of the state. Shuler is a member of the Democratic Party.
L. Kaye Kory is an American politician. She served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 38th district in Fairfax County from 2010 to 2024. She served on the Fairfax County School Board 1999–2009. Kory is a member of the Democratic Party.
Chester Jefferson "Jeff" Stafford was a Virginia lawyer and politician. Elected in 1971 as a Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates, he represented what had been Virginia's 12th district but was renumbered Virginia's 5th district after the 1972 census, which included parts of Carroll, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties; and the city of Radford from 1972 until his death.

Virginia's 64th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 64, located in Isle of Wight County, Prince George County, Suffolk, Surry County, was represented by Republican Rick Morris from 2012 to 2018. Due to scandal, Morris did not seek re-election in Virginia's November 2017 elections. Based on the results of the election, the seat has been held by Republican Emily Brewer since January 2018. Emily Brewer defeated Democrat Michele Joyce in district 64 on November 5, 2019 and won reelection on November 2, 2021.

The Southwest Virginia district surrounding Pulaski is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. It has been represented by Republican Travis Hackworth since 2021 as the 38th, following the death of fellow Republican A. Benton Chafin from complications of COVID-19. (The 38th district number, starting with the November, 2023, election is applied to a redefined district in Northeastern Virginia, bordering Maryland and the District of Columbia.

All 100 delegates were elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held on June 20, 2023. Democrats gained three seats, winning back control with a 51–49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.
The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates, to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. The Democrats retained control of the Senate.
