Virginia's 61st House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of Virginia's bicameral state legislature. District 61 represents Amelia, Cumberland, Mecklenburg, and Nottoway counties as well as part of Lunenburg County. The seat is currently held by Republican Thomas C. Wright Jr. [1]
Thomas Nelson Jr. was a Founding Father of the United States, general in the Revolutionary War, member of the Continental Congress, and a Virginia planter. In addition to serving many terms in the Virginia General Assembly, he twice represented Virginia in the Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Fellow Virginia legislators elected him to serve as the commonwealth's governor in 1781, the same year he fought as a brigadier general in the siege of Yorktown, the final battle of the war.

James Barbour was a Virginia lawyer, planter, politician and Confederate officer. He represented Culpeper County, Virginia, in the Virginia General Assembly, as well as in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850 and the Virginia secession convention of 1861. After a very close race and multiple legal issues, Thomas was certified as the winner and was sworn in as scheduled on January 10, 2018.
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate, to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates are elected to two-year terms single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023.
