The Virginia Slims of New Orleans is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament played from 1984 to 1988. It was held in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States and was played on indoor carpet courts in the Lakefront Arena [1] from 1984 to 1987 and on outdoor hard courts in 1988.

Stefanie Maria "Steffi" Graf is a German former professional tennis player. She was ranked world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, which ranks second since the introduction of the Open Era in 1968 and third all-time behind Margaret Court (24) and Serena Williams (23). In 1988, she became the only tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Furthermore, she is the only tennis player to have won each Grand Slam tournament at least four times.
Christine Marie Evert, known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is a retired American world No. 1 tennis player. She won 18 Grand Slam singles championships and three doubles titles. She was the year-ending world No. 1 singles player in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1981. Overall, Evert won 157 singles championships and 32 doubles titles.
Gabriela Beatriz Sabatini is an Argentine former professional tennis player. She was one of the leading players from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, amassing 41 titles and achieving a career-high ranking of 3 in both singles and doubles. In singles, Sabatini won the US Open in 1990, the WTA Finals in 1988 and 1994, and was runner-up at Wimbledon 1991, US Open 1988 and silver medalist at the 1988 Olympics. In doubles, she won Wimbledon in 1988 with Steffi Graf, and reached three French Open finals. Among Open Era players who did not reach world no. 1 themselves, Sabatini retains the record for accumulating the most wins over reigning world no. 1 ranked players. In 2006, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and in 2018 Tennis Magazine ranked her as the 20th-greatest player of the preceding 50 years.
The Birmingham Classic is a premier level women's tennis tournament on the WTA Tour held at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Edgbaston, Birmingham, United Kingdom. Held at this location since 1982, the tournament is played on outdoor grass courts. It is seen as a warm up tournament for Wimbledon and a sister tournament to the men's Queen's Club Championships. Prior to 2014, the event was part of the WTA's International series.

The tournament was played on indoor carpet courts in 1983 and on indoor hardcourts in 1984 and from 1988 to 1991.

The Ladies Championship Lausanne is a women's professional tennis tournament which is currently played in Lausanne but has played in a number of locations in Switzerland. The event was called the WTA Swiss Open from 1899–1994, and was played on outdoor clay courts. The tournament underwent a name change in 1986, when it was titled the European Open until its discontinuation. It formed part of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. When the WTA introduced the tiering format to its circuit, the event gradually moved up, from being a Tier V in 1988–1989, a Tier IV from 1990–1992, and a Tier III for its remaining years. The WTA announced that the tournament would return in Gstaad as a clay event on the 2016 Tour, replacing another clay court event held in Bad Gastein.

It was the fifth, and last, edition of the tournament and ran from October 3 through October 9, 1988. First-seeded Chris Evert won the singles title, her third at the event after 1985 and 1987, and earned $50,000 first-prize money.
Svetlana Germanovna Parkhomenko is a retired Soviet and Russian tennis player and tennis coach. She was the winner of the Soviet singles tennis championships in 1985 and nine times Soviet champion in women's doubles and mixed doubles. On the international level, she was the winner of the 1983 European amateur championships in women's and mixeddoubles, bronze medalist of the 1983 Universiade in women's and mixed doubles, and winner of eight WTA doubles tournaments.
