Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka are Tamil people of Indian origin in Sri Lanka. They are also known as Malayaga Tamilar,Hill Country Tamils,Up-Country Tamils or simply Indian Tamils. They predominantly descend from workers sent from Southern India to Sri Lanka in the 19th and 20th centuries to work in coffee,tea and rubber plantations. Some also migrated on their own as merchants and as other service providers. These Tamil speakers mostly live in the central highlands,also known as the Malayakam or Hill Country,yet others are also found in major urban areas and in the Northern Province. A majority of Hill Country Tamils are predominantly descendants from the lower working castes of South India. Although they are all termed as Tamils today,some have Telugu and Malayalee origins as well as diverse South Indian caste origins. They are instrumental in the plantation sector economy of Sri Lanka. In general,socio-economically their standard of living is below that of the national average and they are described as one of the poorest and most neglected groups in Sri Lanka. In 1964 a large percentage were repatriated to India,but left a considerable number as stateless people. By the 1990s most of these had been given Sri Lankan citizenship. Most are Hindus with a minority of Christians and Muslims amongst them. There are also a small minority followers of Buddhism among them. Politically they are supportive of trade union-based political parties that have supported most of the ruling coalitions since the 1980s.
Acharya Gogineni Ranga Nayukulu,also known as N. G. Ranga,was an Indian freedom fighter,classical liberal,parliamentarian and farmers' leader. He was the founding president of the Swatantra Party,and an exponent of the peasant philosophy. He received the Padma Vibhushan award for his contributions to the Peasant Movement. N.G. Ranga served in the Indian Parliament for six decades,from 1930 to 1991.
The Workers and Peasants Party (WPP) (also known as the Kirti Kisan Party) was a political party in India,which worked inside the Indian National Congress in 1925–1929. It became an important front organisation for the Communist Party of India and an influential force in the Bombay labour movement. The party was able to muster some success in making alliances with other left elements inside the Congress Party,amongst them Jawaharlal Nehru. However,as the Communist International entered its 'Third Period' phase,the communists deserted the WPP project. The WPP was wound up,as its leadership was arrested by the British authorities in March 1929.
Kushwaha is a community of the Indo-Gangetic Plain that has traditionally been involved in agriculture,including beekeeping. The term has been used to represent different sub-castes of the Kachhis,Kachhvahas,Koeris and Muraos. Under the Indian governments system of positive discrimination,the Kushwahas are classified as a "Backward" or Other backward class. The Kushwaha had worshipped Shiva and Shakta,but beginning in the 20th century,they claim descent from the Suryavansh (Solar) dynasty via Kusha,one of the twin sons of Rama and Sita. At present,it is a broad community formed by coming together of several caste groups with similar occupational backgrounds and socio-economic status,who,over the time,started inter-marrying among themselves and created all India caste network for caste solidarity. The communities which merged into this caste cluster includes Kachhi,Kachhwaha,Kushwaha,Mali,Marrar,Saini,Sonkar,Murai,Shakya,Maurya,Koeri and Panara.
The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) is an Indian farmers' organization that is politically linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh,and a member of the Sangh Parivar. BKS was founded by Dattopant Thengadi in 1978. As of 2000,Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh claimed BKS had a quarter million members,organized in 11,000 villages and 301 districts across the country. The organization is dominated by landed gentry.
Keshavrao Marutrao Jedhe (Deshmukh) (21 April 1896 –12 November 1959) was an Indian independence activist and politician from Pune. He served as a leading figure in the Indian National Congress,and in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement during independence. The famous Swargate chowk in Pune is named after him.
The Koeri,also referred to as Kushwaha and more recently self-described as Maurya in several parts of northern India are an Indian non-elite caste,found largely in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,whose traditional occupation was agriculture. According to Arvind Narayan Das they were horticulturist rather than agriculturists. They are also recorded as performing the work of Mahajan in credit market of rural parts of Bihar and Bengal in 1880s. Koeris have attempted Sanskritisation—as part of social resurgence. During the British rule in India,Koeris were described as "agriculturalists" along with Kurmis and other cultivating castes. They are described as a dominant caste in various opinions.
