Viticulture is a worker placement board game published by Stonemaier Games in 2013. [1] The game's design was crowdfunded via a campaign on Kickstarter, with the concept of players building an Italian vineyard. [2] Upon its release, Viticulture received praise for its engagement, but its luck was critiqued. Several expansions and reprints were later released.
In Viticulture, players operate a traditional Tuscan vineyard. [3] Each round of the game represents one year of operation divided into four seasons. [2] [3]
Rounds begin with a spring turn, when the player chooses a location in the wake-up track that provides various benefits. [2] This is followed by summer, during which players place workers on the summer action spaces in the shared board, which enable a player to plant vines, sell grapes, gain money through tours, play a summer visitor card, draw a vine card, erect structures, which allow grapes to be planted, vines to be aged, and awarding additional victory points. [3] In the autumn turn, players draw either a summer visitor card, which helps improve the site, or a winter visitor card, which enables the player to harvest their vineyard. [3] The winter turn also allows each player places workers in the winter action spaces, which enable the player to harvest a field, process grapes, fill wine orders, hire an additional worker, or draw a winter visitor card. [3] A round is completed when players age their grape and wine tokens, collect their workers, and collect any accrued income. [3]
When a grape is planted in the fields of the individual boards, it could subsequently be harvested as grape tokens. Those tokens are processed and moved to the wine cellar, which award victory points through filling orders. When twenty points is reached for one player, the game ends after the season is completed, and the player with the most points is the winner. [3]
The first expansion set, released in May 2013 with the original version of the game, is called Arboriculture. [4] The expansion set Tuscany was also funded via Kickstarter. [5] The latter introduced a greater breadth of options for players to score victory points. [4] It also created an asymmetric start to the game providing players with different options to establish their wine-making business. [4]
An app version of the game was created by Digidiced. [6] [7]
The Tuscany expansion set includes numerous modular additions to the base game. The Grande Worker module allows a player to place a worker on any action even if that move is not available at the time, eliminating the possibility that players miss necessary actions. [4] It was later incorporated into the base game. [4] The Mamas and Papas module varies the resources with which players start the game. [4] The Properties module enables a player to sell a parcel of land for cash, which is difficult to acquire in the early phases of the base game. [4]
Other modules in the expansion set include Patronage, Advanced Visitors cards, New Visitors cards, and Structures cards. [4] The latter enables a player to erect up to two special structures that add a victory point to the player's score and also provide additional game options for the player, such as a new action, a recurring bonus, or a residual at the end of each round. [4]
The Extended Board module replaces the main game board. [4] It is a significant modification of the original board, with actions and bonuses shifted. [4] It modifies the season and player wake-up track, and changes the game-ending condition to 25 victory points, as there are more ways in which players can earn them. [4]
The expansion also includes the Arboriculture and Formaggio expansions, which allow players to make fruits, olive oil, and cheese, as well as Mafia. [4]
The module Special Workers adds numerous worker types to the game, each with additional functions but also usable as standard workers. [4] These are the chef, farmer, innkeeper, mafioso, merchant, messenger, oracle, politico, professore, soldato, and traveller. [4]
The Tuscany Essential Edition was later released in 2016, with only the three modules, the Extended Board, Special workers, and Structures, other variants were implemented in the Essential Edition. [8] [9]
In 2015, the Viticulture Essential Edition was released. It includes several expansion sets in Tuscany, including the Grande Worker, Mamas and Papas, Properties, Advanced Visitors cards, and the single-player Automa variant. [10] [11] [12] [13]
Several new visitor card sets, including the Moor Visitor and Visits from the Rhine Valley, were also released for the game. [14] [15] [16]
In 2022, Viticulture World, a co-operative expansion for the base game, was released. It also includes six different card decks, with different rules and events. The Finnish review website Lautapeliopas praised its components, engagement, strategy, and replayability, but criticised the card draw introducing luck elements that affects the difficulty. [17] [18]
Dave Banks, in a review for Wired , described the game as "wonderfully fun". [2] [3] In a review for Punchboard Media, Charles Hasegawa states that the game has a few flaws, particularly luck associated with drawing cards and that in the early phases of the game each player is "trying to do very similar things" with minor variation. [4] He also described the Tuscany expansion as "a masterpiece of changes that turn an ok game into a more varied and more complex game". [4]
By 2018, the game was ranked in the top 25 of all board games at BoardGameGeek. [1]
Chrononauts is a family of card games that simulates popular fictional ideas about how time travellers might alter history, drawing on sources like Back to the Future and the short stories collection Travels Through Time. The game was designed by Andrew Looney and is published by Looney Labs. The original game and a variant each won the Origins Award for Best Traditional Card Game.

The game board represents renaissance-era Spain where the nobility fight for control of the nine regions. El Grande was praised for its area-control mechanism, and was awarded the Spiel des Jahres prize and the Deutscher Spiele Preis in 1996. Following its release, several expansions and an alternative version were published.
Chez Geek is a card game that parodies geek culture and cohabitation. It was created by Jon Darbro and developed by Alain H. Dawson, with additional development by Steve Jackson and Russell Godwin. The cards and rules were illustrated by John Kovalic. Upon its release, the game won the Origins Award.
Alhambra is a 2003 tile-based German-style board game designed by Dirk Henn. It was originally published in Germany by Queen Games in a language-interdependent version; an English-specific version was released in North America by the now-defunct Überplay. The game is a Muslim-themed update, set during the construction of the Alhambra palace in 14th century Granada, of the 1998 stock trading board game Stimmt So!, which in turn was an update of the 1992 mafia influence board game Al Capone; the original version was subsequently released as Alhambra: The Card Game. Upon its release, Alhambra won numerous awards, including the Spiel des Jahres award. Its success has led to the release of numerous expansion packs and spin-off games, and is becoming Queen Games' flagship franchise.
Kingdom Builder is a strategy board game designed by Donald X. Vaccarino, published in 2011 by Queen Games with illustrations by Oliver Schlemmer in German, British and international versions.
Lords of Waterdeep is a German-style board game designed by Peter Lee and Rodney Thompson and published by Wizards of the Coast in 2012. The game is set in Waterdeep, a fictional city in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Scythe is a board game for one to five players designed by Jamey Stegmaier and published by Stonemaier Games in 2016. Set in an alternative history version of 1920s Europe, players control factions that produce resources, develop economic infrastructure, and use dieselpunk combat mechs to engage in combat and control territories. Players take up to two actions per turn using individual player boards, and the game proceeds until one player has earned six achievements. At this point, the players receive coins for the achievements they have attained and the territories they control, and the player with the most coins is declared the winner.
Azul is an abstract strategy board game designed by Michael Kiesling and released by Plan B Games in 2017. Based on Portuguese tiles called azulejos, in Azul players collect sets of similarly colored tiles which they place on their player board. When a row is filled, one of the tiles is moved into a square pattern on the right side of the player board, where it garners points depending on where it is placed in relation to other tiles on the board.
Everdell is a board game for 1 to 4 players designed by James Wilson and published by Starling Games in 2018. In the game, players take the role of forest animals building a city over four seasons by collecting resources, recruiting workers, and constructing buildings. The game has been well regarded by reviewers, with its art and components receiving strong praise.
Wingspan is a board game designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games in 2019. It is a card-driven, engine-building board game in which players compete to attract birds to their wildlife reserves. During the game's development process, Hargrave constructed personal charts of birds observed in Maryland, with statistics sourced from various biological databases; the special powers of birds were also selected to resemble real-life characteristics. Upon its release, Wingspan received critical and commercial acclaim for its gameplay, accurate thematic elements, and artwork. The game also won numerous awards, including the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres. Several expansions and a digital edition have been subsequently published.
Caverna: The Cave Farmers is a 2013 board game designed by Uwe Rosenberg. It is a complex worker placement strategy game that shares similarities in gameplay and theme with his earlier board game, Agricola, The game's theme revolves around helping a small dwarf family to settle a cave and nearby woodlands and to develop the setting through furnishing caves as well as converting forests into meadows, fields and pastures. Caverna received positive reviews from critics, and two major expansions have been released for the game.
Sagrada is a dice-drafting board game designed by Adrian Adamescu and Daryl Andrews and published in 2017 by Floodgate Games. Each player constructs a stained-glass window using dice on a personal 4×5 game board board with restrictions on the types of dice that can be played on each space. In the game, players aim to draw terrains based on drawn cards that award points based on the relevant letter cards. The game received positive reviews, and was nominated for the Kennerspiel des Jahres, but lost to The Crew. It was also runner-up to Parks for the Best Family Game of the 2019 Board Game Quests Awards. An app for solitary play was released in 2020.
