WAI Architecture Think Tank or WAI Think Tank is an architectural practice based in Beijing that was founded in Brussels in 2008 by Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski. [1] [2] [3]

After founding WAI Architecture Think Tank in 2008, Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski relocated their practice to Beijing in 2009. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Buildings and Books

WAI Architecture Think Tank has been selected as finalist in several museum design competitions, including the shortlisted design for the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, in Moscow, Russia and the Museum of Gardens in Suzhou. [9] [10] Since 2011 WAI Architecture Think Tank publishes an independent architecture and urbanism magazine titled What About It? [11] In 2013 they wrote, designed and published the book Pure Hardcore Icons: A Manifesto on Pure Form in Architecture. [12] [13] In 2014 Pure Hardcore Icons was translated into German and published by the quarterly magazine ARCH+. [14]

Since 2008 WAI Architecture Think Tank founders Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski have been collaborating on the art collective Garcia Frankowski, creating exhibitions, curatorial projects and publications including the book Shapes, Islands, Texts: A Garcia Frankowski Manifesto. [15] [16] [17]

Several manifestoes (Architecture and Art manifesto)and essays of WAI Architecture Think Tank have been translated into Spanish, Chinese, German, Arabic and Portuguese. The work of WAI Think Tank has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in Manchester and in St. Petersburg, Moscow, New York, Los Angeles, Columbus, Chicago, Michigan, Barcelona, Madrid, Bratislava, Buenos Aires, Zurich, Basel, San Juan, Montevideo, Guadalajara, London, Manchester Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Osaka, Milan, Venice, Istanbul, Prague, Helsinki, Paris, Zurich, Sydney, Melbourne, Lisbon and Porto. Remment Lucas Koolhaas is a Dutch architect, architectural theorist, urbanist and Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He is often cited as a representative of Deconstructivism and is the author of Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan.

Herzog & de Meuron

Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd., or Herzog & de Meuron Architekten, BSA/SIA/ETH (HdM), is a Swiss architecture firm with its head office in Basel, Switzerland. The careers of founders and senior partners Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron closely paralleled one another, with both attending the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. They are perhaps best known for their conversion of the giant Bankside Power Station in London to the new home of Tate Modern. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been visiting professors at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design since 1994 and professors at ETH Zürich since 1999.

Office for Metropolitan Architecture

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is a Dutch architectural firm based in Rotterdam, founded in 1975 by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and Greek architect Elia Zenghelis, along with Madelon Vriesendorp and Zoe Zenghelis.

Futurist architecture Architectural style

Futurist architecture is an early-20th century form of architecture born in Italy, characterized by strong chromaticism, long dynamic lines, suggesting speed, motion, urgency and lyricism: it was a part of Futurism, an artistic movement founded by the poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who produced its first manifesto, the Manifesto of Futurism, in 1909. The movement attracted not only poets, musicians, and artists but also a number of architects. A cult of the Machine Age and even a glorification of war and violence were among the themes of the Futurists. The latter group included the architect Antonio Sant'Elia, who, though building little, translated the futurist vision into an urban form.

China World Trade Center Tower III

China World Trade Center Tower III is a supertall skyscraper with 81 floors, 4 underground floors, and 30 elevators in Beijing, China. It is the third phase of development of the China World Trade Center complex in Beijing's central business district of Chaoyang at the junction of the East Third Ring Road and Jianguomen Outer Street. The building topped out at 330 m (1,083 ft) on 29 October 2007 and completed in 2010. The building bears a resemblance to the original Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, which were destroyed during the September 11th, 2001 attacks. It is the second tallest building in Beijing.

Xu Zhiyong

Xu Zhiyong is a Chinese civil rights activist and formerly a lecturer at the Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications. He was one of the founders of the NGO Open Constitution Initiative and an active rights lawyer in China who helped those underprivileged. He is the main founder and icon of the New Citizens' Movement in China. In January 2014 he was sentenced to four years in prison for "gathering crowds to disrupt public order". He was detained again on 15 February 2020, in the southern city of Guangzhou.

Aaron Betsky, director of Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design, as of June 1, 2020, is a widely published critic on art, architecture and design. Ironically, though he was named director of Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design which offers a 5-year accredited Bachelor of Architecture Professional Degree he has previously gone on record as being opposed to the concept and practice of the professional undergraduate Bachelor of Architecture degree offering. Trained as an architect, though not licensed by his own admission as of 2013, and in the humanities at Yale University, he is the author of over a dozen books, including Architecture Matters, Making It Modern, Landscrapers: Building With the Land, Scanning: The Aberrant Architectures of Diller + Scofidio, Queer Space, Revelatory Landscapes, and Architecture Must Burn. Internationally known as a lecturer, curator, reviewer and commentator, he writes the blog "Beyond Buildings" for architectmagazine.com. Director of the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale, he has also been President and Dean of the School of Architecture at Taliesin ,director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (2001-2006) and of the Cincinnati Art Museum (2006-2014), and was founding Curator of Architecture, Design and Digital Projects at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995-2001). As an unlicensed architect, he worked for Frank O. Gehry & Associates and Hodgetts + Fung. At the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2003 he co-curated "Scanning: The Aberrant Architectures of Diller + Scofidio." Born in Montana, he grew up there and in the Netherlands.

Alex Garcia-Rivera is an American rock drummer, drum-tech and recording engineer from Boston, Massachusetts. He has been the drummer for the bands Shelter, Piebald, Good Clean Fun, Bloodhorse, 454 Big Block, Saves The Day, Cold Cave, but is best known as the drummer for hardcore/punk band American Nightmare. He also performs all instruments in a solo band under the moniker Chrome Over Brass and owns and operates Mystic Valley Studio, an all-analog recording studio in Medford, Massachusetts.

Caroline ODonnell

Caroline O'Donnell is an architect, writer, and educator. She is the founder and sole-proprietor of the firm CODA, based in Ithaca, NY, USA. CODA won the PS1 MoMA Young Architects Program in 2013 and built "Party Wall" at PS1 in Long Island City, New York. O’Donnell is the Edgar A. Tafel associate professor of architecture and director of the Master of Architecture Program at Cornell University and visiting associate professor at Harvard GSD in Fall 2018. Her first book "Niche Tactics: Generative Relationships between Architecture and Site," was published in April 2015.

Cruz Garcia is a Puerto Rican architect, artist, and architectural theorist. Since 2008 he directs WAI Architecture Think Tank, an architectural practice he founded in Brussels with Nathalie Frankowski, with whom he also collaborates in the art collective Garcia Frankowski. Cruz Garcia relocated to Beijing in 2009 with WAI Architecture Think Tank and Garcia Frankowski.

M+ Art museum in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong

M+ is a museum of visual culture currently under construction in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong. It is scheduled to open in 2021.

Garcia Frankowski is an artist duo formed by Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski. Garcia and Frankowski worked in Beijing where they also direct WAI Think Tank and Intelligentsia Gallery, where they also work as curators. Currently, they work as Hyde Lecture Chairs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Xie Molin is a contemporary Chinese artist currently working and living in Beijing, China. He is best known for creating paintings using a tri-axial linkage painting machine.

Lazar Khidekel

Lazar Markovich Khidekel is an artist, designer, visionary architect and theoretician, who is noted for realizing the abstract, avant-garde Suprematist movement through architecture.

Path of Democracy

Path of Democracy is a moderate political group and think tank established in 2015 in Hong Kong. Led by former Civic Party legislator Ronny Tong, the group seeks to establish a middle-in-the-road path between the pro-Beijing camp and pan-democracy camp on achieving democracy in the "third road". Ronny Tong joined the Executive Council on 1 July 2017.

Friendship Archway

Friendship Archway is a paifang installed at Chinatown, Washington, D.C., United States. It is one of the largest ceremonial arches outside of China.
