WBCA was a short-lived commercial FM radio station, licensed to Schenectady, New York. The station, originally W47A, launched on July 17, 1941, as the first commercial FM station without an associated AM station. The call sign was changed to WBCA in 1943. Despite initial optimism that FM stations would soon supplant the AM band, [1] WBCA ceased operations in 1952 due essentially to the small number of FM receivers in use.
In May 1940, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the establishment, effective January 1, 1941, of an FM radio band operating on 40 channels spanning 42–50 MHz. [3] The first fifteen commercial FM station construction permits were issued on October 31, 1940, including one to the Capitol Broadcasting Company in Schenectady for 44.7 MHz, [4] which was issued the call sign W47A. [5] The station made its debut broadcast on July 17, 1941. [6]
The person primarily responsible for the station's founding was Leonard L. Asch, who had an extensive background in marketing at General Electric. A 1941 station review reported that "the advent of W47A on the air waves was greeted by five pages of promotional material in one Schenectady paper, six pages in the other Schenectady daily, [7] and by two pages each in the Albany and Troy papers." Close attention was given to the station's character, and this report further stated that "The problem of earning a reputation among both sponsors and the listening public for 'class,' without falling into the error of becoming a 'snob' station, has required some ticklish maneuvering. Offers of programs from so-called 'borax' houses [8] and other opportunistic high-pressure merchandisers have been declined as tactfully as possible, in keeping with the high standards established for all Frequency Modulation broadcasting. It is believed that the temporary loss of immediate revenue will be compensated by an increasing public recognition of the worthwhileness of those sponsors whose programs are acceptable." [9]
At this time FM was still a new, unproven technology. The station owners put on a series of demonstrations, and began locally selling General Electric-brand receivers (which did not cover the entire FM broadcast band, to make it difficult to receive competing stations). [10] [11] One station countered with advertisements declaring "This is not an FM station, and can be heard on any set." [12]
Programming, spanning 16 hours per day, came from a variety of sources, including retransmission of over-the-air signals from FM stations in Paxton, Massachusetts, and Alpine, New Jersey. W47A was the first FM station to affiliate with the Mutual Broadcasting System, and also became a Yankee network affiliate. A studio transmitter link, operating at 331 MHz, connected the main Schenectady studio to the Helderberg mountaintop transmitter. [12]
Effective November 1, 1943, the FCC modified its policy for FM call letters, [13] and the call sign was changed to WBCA. The call letters represented "the names of the three men in charge. The 'B' is for Harold E. Blodgett, Schenectady attorney; the 'C' represents James E. Cushing, leader in local business and civic affairs; and the 'A' is for Leonard L. Asch, formerly in charge of sales promotion methods in the merchandise department at General Electric Co. The three men initiated and financed the station, and are its owners." [14]
On June 27, 1945, the FCC announced the reassignment of the FM band to 80 channels from 88–106 MHz (which was soon expanded to 100 channels from 88–108 MHz), in part due to concern that under unusual atmospheric conditions signals on the existing frequencies were prone to causing interference, by traveling much greater than usual distances. [16] [17] (In 1943, WBCA had reported that under certain conditions it had been received as far away as Venezuela.) [18] Most existing station owners opposed the move, and in 1947 Asch reported that, out of 18,000 FM homes within the WBCA service area, more than 15,000 had radios that could not tune to the new high band, and "Judging from the constantly descending production figures of set manufacturers, it will be a long time before this low band audience will be equalled with high band sets." [19] Despite the opposition the transfer eventually took place. During a 1948 transitional period, WBCA broadcast simultaneously on its original 44.7 MHz frequency and its new "high band" channel of 101.1 MHz, eventually shutting down the 44.7 MHz signal.
A 1941 review of the station's finances had been positive, stating shortly after its debut that "Probably unique in the history of broadcasting is W47A's feat of commencing commercial operations on the very first day with a schedule of programs sufficient to just meet operating expenses, exclusive of capital costs." [9] In 1943 it was reported that "the station isn't making any money, but it isn't losing any either". [10] The 1941 review stated that "In some instances, far-sighted businessmen who spotted the future opportunities of FM asked to have contracts made on a two- or three-year basis", although "All such offers, naturally, were declined with thanks." [9] In 1945, Asch revised this latter comment to "I am sorry that we declined these offers with thanks." Still, despite ongoing financial challenges, he was optimistic, maintaining that "Four years of fulltime operation under the most adverse conditions without dipping prohibitively into the red—argues well for FM operation in normal times with sets available." and "Away from the metropolitan centers like New York, and Chicago, FM will rapidly take over and the transition period can readily be in less than two years. The public, always receptive to better equipment and service, will force the demand for FM sets when FM service becomes available. With the establishment of FM, I believe that the multiplexing of facsimile will become a better commercial combination than television for at least 10 years in smaller communities. [12]
In 1945, Leonard Asch had said "The management of an independent FM station will require careful planning and promotion", while, in contrast, "the management of an FM station with an AM affiliation is neither expensive nor difficult". [12] In mid-1948 WBCA acquired an AM affiliation, when WPTR, in nearby Albany, debuted, [20] with Asch as the station's general manager, although in November 1949 he resigned from WPTR, while remaining as president of WBCA. [21]
Control of WPTR and WBCA was assumed by Schine Chain Theaters. [22] The addition of an AM sister station did little to improve WBCA's finances, and station advertising now showcased the AM station, with WBCA limited to passing references. [15] Despite this, Asch remained optimistic about FM's future, and was quoted in late 1948 that "The continued degradation of AM station coverage will surely benefit FM. Also, the set manufacturers, stuck with a stagnant AM set market and TV tube shortages, as well as limited markets, must surely turn to FM set production and promotion in 1949 for volume." [23]
In the early 1950s continuing severe financial problems due to the slow acceptance of FM radio caused the number of stations in the United States to start to decline. In April 1952 WBCA received permission to remain silent for six months, but never resumed broadcasting. [24]
FM broadcasting in the United States began in the 1930s at engineer and inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong's experimental station, W2XMN. The use of FM radio has been associated with higher sound quality in music radio.
WFMF is a commercial radio station owned by iHeartMedia and licensed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It serves the Baton Rouge metropolitan area with a Top 40 (CHR) format. The studios are located in Baton Rouge, and the transmitter site is in nearby Plaquemine.
WRVE is a commercial radio station licensed in Schenectady and serving the Capital District and Upper Hudson Valley in New York. It broadcasts a hot adult contemporary radio format and calls itself "99.5 The River", referring to the Hudson River. The station is owned by iHeartMedia as one of seven radio stations owned by the company in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy radio market.
WUKY is a listener-supported, public radio station in Lexington, Kentucky. Owned by the University of Kentucky (UK), it has an Adult Album Alternative radio format, airing more than 100 hours of music per week. Some news and informational programming is supplied by National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media (APM) and the BBC. The station broadcasts from state of the art radio studios in northwestern Lexington at the intersection of Greendale Road and Spurr Road.
Apex radio stations was the name commonly given to a short-lived group of United States broadcasting stations, which were used to evaluate transmitting on frequencies that were much higher than the ones used by standard amplitude modulation (AM) and shortwave stations. Their name came from the tall height of their transmitter antennas, which were needed because coverage was primarily limited to local line-of-sight distances. These stations were assigned to what at the time were described as "ultra-high shortwave" frequencies, between roughly 25 and 44 MHz. They employed amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions, although in most cases using a wider bandwidth than standard broadcast band AM stations, in order to provide high fidelity sound with less static and distortion.
WMHH is a Christian talk and teaching radio station licensed to Clifton Park, New York, and serving New York's Capital District, including Albany, Schenectady and Troy. The station is owned by Mars Hill Broadcasting, utilizing programming from the Mars Hill Network. It has an effective radiated power of 4,700 watts, and broadcasts from a rental tower in Clifton Park, New York, which is owned by Fitch Communications of New York (FCNY) and shared with WKKF and WTMM-FM.
WDCD was a news/talk radio station licensed to Albany, New York, United States and served New York's Capital District, Adirondacks, and much of western New England. The station was owned by DJRA Broadcasting, and broadcast on 1540 kHz at 50 kilowatts from a three-tower directional antenna array adjacent to the station's studios in Colonie, New York.
WSRS – branded 96-1 SRS – is a commercial radio station licensed to Worcester, Massachusetts, and serving Central Massachusetts. Owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., the transmitter site and studios are located in the Worcester suburb of Paxton. WSRS broadcasts an adult contemporary format, switching to Christmas music for much of November and December. The station is the local network affiliate for the Delilah and Ellen K programs.

WSM-FM was a commercial radio station that was operated by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Nashville, Tennessee, United States, beginning on March 1, 1941. Under its original call sign of W47NV, it was described at the time as the first fully licensed commercial FM station in the nation. However, after ten years of financial losses, the station ceased operations on March 15, 1951.
W2XMN was an experimental FM radio station located in Alpine, New Jersey. It was constructed beginning in 1936 by Edwin Howard Armstrong in order to promote his invention of wide-band FM broadcasting. W2XMN was the first FM station to begin regular operations, and was used to introduce FM broadcasting to the general public in the New York City area. The station, in addition to being a testing site for transmitter and receiver development, was used for propagation studies and as an over-the-air relay station for distributing network programming to other FM stations in the region.
WFMN was a commercial FM radio station located in Alpine, New Jersey. It was licensed from 1941 until around 1953 to inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong, and was co-located with two other Armstrong stations, W2XMN, and W2XEA/KE2XCC (1945-1954). However, for most of its existence WFMN was authorized for significantly lower power than the other two stations, and appears to have rarely been on the air.
WMGM-FM was a radio station in New York City, broadcasting on 100.3 MHz. It was owned by Loew's, Inc., a subsidiary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio alongside radio station WMGM, which was previously WHN. One of New York's earliest FM outlets, WMGM-FM broadcast from 1942 to 1955.
WGTR was a pioneer commercial FM radio station, which was the first of two mountain-top stations established by the Yankee Network. It began regular programming, as experimental station W1XOJ, in 1939. In 1941 it was licensed for commercial operation from studios in Boston, initially with the call sign W43B, which was changed to WGTR in 1943. In 1947, its designated community of license was changed to Worcester, Massachusetts.
WMNE was a pioneer commercial FM radio station, which was the second of two mountain-top broadcasting stations established by the Yankee Network. It began regular programming, as experimental station W1XER, in December 1940. In 1941 it was licensed for commercial operation from studios in Boston, initially with the call sign W39B, which was changed to WMTW in 1943. In late 1946 the station's designated community of license was changed to Portland, Maine, and its call letters became WMNE.
WTMJ-FM was a pioneer commercial FM radio station, owned by the Journal Company, publishers of The Milwaukee Journal, and located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the late 1940s, it was one of the first FM stations in America and among the most powerful. Although heavily promoted, the station was unprofitable and ceased operations in April 1950. Management foresaw a limited future, especially in contrast to recently introduced television broadcasting.
WMLL was an FM radio station in Evansville, Indiana, that began broadcasting, as W45V, in 1941. It was the first commercial FM station authorized in the state of Indiana. WMLL suspended operations and was deleted in 1956.
WELD was an FM radio station in Columbus, Ohio, that began broadcasting, as W45CM, in 1941. It was the first commercial FM station authorized in the state of Ohio. WELD suspended operations and was deleted in 1953.
WNBF-FM was an FM radio station in Binghamton, New York, that began broadcasting, as W49BN, in 1942. It was the first commercial FM station authorized in the Southern Tier region. WNBF-FM suspended operations and was deleted in 1952.
