Gezira, also spelt Al Jazirah, is one of the 18 states of Sudan. The state lies between the Blue Nile and the White Nile in the east-central region of the country. It has an area of 27,549 km2. The name comes from the Arabic word for island. Wad Madani is the capital of the state. Gezira is known as an irrigated cotton-producing state as it is a well-populated area that is suitable for agriculture.

Wad Madani or Madani is the capital of the Al Jazirah state in east-central Sudan. Wad Madani lies on the west bank of the Blue Nile, nearly 85 miles (136 km) southeast of Khartoum. It is linked by rail to Khartoum and is the center of a cotton-growing region. The city is also the center of local trade in wheat, peanuts, barley, and livestock. It is also headquarters of the Irrigation Service. In 2008, its population was 345,290. It is the home of the Al Jazirah University, the second biggest public university in Sudan. Further, there is Wad Medani Ahlia University, a private university.

Al-Ittihad Sports Club also known as Ittihad Wad Madani is a Sudanese football club based in Wad Madani. They played in the top division in Sudanese football, Sudan Premier League. Their home stadium is Stade Wad Medani. Their rival is Ahli Madani, a team which is in the same city as Itthad Madani. The derby in Madani is called Madani Derby, which is one of the biggest derby in Sudan.

Wad Madani Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Wad Medani, Sudan. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Ittihad Wad Medani, Al Ahly Wad Medani and Jazeerat Alfeel. The stadium has a capacity of 15,000 people. It hosted several matches during the 1970 African Nations Cup in Sudan.

The 2008 Sudan Premier League was the 37th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on February 21 with Al-Ittihad 1-0 win over Amal Atbara, and concluded on November 17 with 1-1 draw between Al-Hilal Omdurman and Al-Merreikh. Al-Merreikh were crowned champions.

Abushneib (أبوشنيب is a relatively big village or a small town located in the northern area of al-Gezira province, about 90 km south of Khartoum the capital of Sudan, and 100 km north west Wad-Madani, the capital of al-Gezira province. The village lies at the southern side of a main water channel which flows from the main irrigation source; the River Nile at Abu-Ushar. The canal is intended to irrigate the surrounding cultivated land plots affiliating to al-Gezira Project. The village is also called “Hillat al-Sheikh al-Tayyib” after the name of the religious figure: al-Sheikh al-Tayib wad-haj al-Siddiq wad-Badr, or. The late Al-Shaeikh al-Tayib was well known in Sudan and some Muslim countries not only for his leading role in propagating the teachings of Islam in the region, but also for building more than 130 mosques or religious institutes in the various areas of Sudan, including Khartoum the capital. Though he originally comes from Al-Badr, who settled earlier in Umdhawan-ban and in Ummarahi, he opted to be buried in Abushneib. His tomb is regularly visited by thousands of followers from all parts of Sudan in Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as well as on annual obituary occasions.

The Province of the Episcopal Church of Sudan is a province of the Anglican Communion, comprising the Sudan. It is the 39th Anglican province, created in a ceremony that took place in All Saints Cathedral, Khartoum, on 30 July 2017. The first archbishop and primate is Ezekiel Kondo.

The 2018 Sudan Premier League is the 47th season of top-tier football in Sudan. The season began on 3 February 2018.

Amin Mekki Medani was a Sudanese lawyer, diplomat, human rights and political activist. He was the president of the Confederation of Sudanese Civil Society, Vice President of Civil Society Initiative, and President of the Sudan Human Rights Monitor (SHRM). He served as head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) office in the West Bank and Gaza, Chief of Mission of the OHCHR in Zagreb, Croatia, legal advisor to the Special Representative of the U.N Secretary-General in Iraq as well as Afghanistan, and a Regional Representative for the OHCHR in Beirut, Lebanon. He was the 1991 recipient of the Human Rights Watch Award for Human Rights Monitoring and 1991 Recipient of the American Bar Association Human Rights Award, as well as the 2013 recipient for the European Union Human Rights award.
