Waldjinah (born 7 November 1945) is an Indonesian traditional singer. She is most known for the song "Walang Kekek", which made Javanese keroncong music known throughout Indonesia. She has also worked with other Indonesian artists, including Gesang Martohartono and Ismail Marzuki.

Early life and career

Waldjinah was born in Surakarta, Indonesia, on 7 November 1945 [1] as the tenth child of her family. Her mother sold food in a market and her father worked as a painter in a batik factory. Waldjinah was inspired to become a singer from listening to traditional Javanese songs at the factory where her father worked. During her high school years, she became interested in keroncong music. [2]

In 1958, Waldjinah entered a singing competition held by the Radio Republik Indonesia radio station in Surakarta. After winning the competition, her professional career began and she became a celebrity. [2] In 1960, she was voted the singer with most potential at a national competition in Jakarta.[ citation needed ]

Waldjinah has recorded 200 albums and over 1500 songs. She is known for the hit song "Walang Kekek", which made Javanese keroncong music known throughout Indonesia. She has worked with other Indonesian artists, including Gesang Martohartono, Mus Mulyadi, Andjar Any, and Ismail Marzuki. [3]

Personal life

Waldjinah's first husband managed her own career as well as her backing band, Orkes Keroncong Bintang Surakarta. He died in 1985. She met her second husband four years later, who also worked as her manager. [4] She has five children, as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. [3] Her son Ary Mulyono, an accomplished instrumentalist who also with keroncong, is leader of her backing band. [4]

Waldjinah owns the Galeri Walang Kekek, an art gallery located in Grogol, Sukoharjo which exhibits her collection of batik cloth. [5]

The song became popular in Indonesia during the Second World War and was one of the songs promoted nationally in the newly-independent country after the war.

Gesang Martohartono was an Indonesian singer-songwriter from central Java. He is the composer of the "Bengawan Solo," famous song throughout Indonesia, Japan, part of Asia, and some other countries. The song is almost synonymous with the kroncong style of Javanese music. Martohartono was most commonly known simply as Gesang.

Langgam jawa is a regional form of Indonesian kroncong music most often associated with the city of Surakarta (Solo). As is the case with traditional kroncong music, langgam jawa utilizes a variety of non-native instruments, such as the flute, guitar, ukulele, cello and violin. However, these instruments are performed using a seven-tone Javanese gamelan scale known as pelog. The cello typically plays the role of a gamelan ciblon drum, with the performer slowly plucking or slapping the strings in a percussive fashion.

Kroncong is the name of a ukulele-like instrument and an Indonesian musical style that typically makes use of the kroncong. A kroncong orchestra or ensemble traditionally consists of a flute, a violin, at least one, but usually a pair of kroncongs, a cello in Pizzicato style, string bass in pizzicato style, and a vocalist. Kroncong originated as an adaptation of a Portuguese musical tradition, brought by sailors to Indonesian port cities in the 16th century. By the late 19th century, kroncong reached popular music status throughout the Indonesian archipelago.

In 1968, he was honoured with the creation of the well-known Taman Ismail Marzuki which is a cultural centre in Menteng in central Jakarta. In 2004 he was declared one of the National Heroes of Indonesia.
