British Empire and Commonwealth Games appearances

Wales at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games (abbreviated WAL) was the fifth time that the nation had participated at the Games following the appearances in 1930, 1934, 1938 and 1950. [1] [2]

Contents

The Games were held in Vancouver, Canada, from 30 July to 7 August 1954. Wales came 13th overall with one gold, one silver and five bronze medals. [3]

Wales sent 20 athlete to the games, a considerable increase on the three athletes sent four years previous. [4] The team was sent to the 1954 Games amidst news that the British Empire and Commonwealth Games Council for Wales wished to raise a 50,000 sum to enable the nation to host the 1958 games. [5]

Weightlifter Mel Barnett and rower David Glynne-Jones both competed for England instead of Wales.
