The Wallkill Correctional Facility is a medium security prison in New York state in the United States. The prison is located just north of the hamlet of Wallkill, in the Town of Shawangunk.
The prison opened in 1933, in the form of a collegiate campus with no surrounding wall or fence. The architect was Alfred Hopkins, an east-coast estate architect with a sideline in prisons such as Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. Connected three-story English Gothic buildings of gray stone "self-consciously embraced an idealistic notion of the rural idyll and an old-fashioned sense of place". [1] Hopkins also designed Woodbourne Correctional Facility and Coxsackie Correctional Facility for the state.
Wallkill was once only used to house "Good Behavior/White Collar" inmates. Due to changing times, the inmate population has changed and first-time offenders now begin and end their sentences at Wallkill CF. The one-time "Prison without a Wall," is no more—in the 21st century chain-link fencing and razor wire was constructed around the perimeter.
The facility has a long-running optical laboratory to grind lenses and produce eyeglasses. Inmates may also learn to serve retired racehorses through the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's Second Chances program. [2] [3]
Wallkill's grounds contain the historic Walstein Childs House, circa 1763. The state's Shawangunk Correctional Facility is also nearby.
Shawangunk is a town in southwestern Ulster County, New York, USA. The population was 14,332 at the 2010 census. Like the neighboring mountain range, for which it is named, it is pronounced either as the Munsee Lenape, Shawangunk, or as the colonial Shongum SHON-gum by local residents.

Attica Correctional Facility is a maximum security campus New York State prison in the town of Attica, New York, operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It was constructed in the 1930s and held many of the most dangerous criminals of the time. A CS gas system installed in the mess hall and industry areas has been used to quell conflicts in these areas. The prison now holds many inmates who are serving various types of sentences, and who are usually sent to the facility because of disciplinary problems in other facilities.
Minnesota Correctional Facility – Oak Park Heights (MCF-OPH) is Minnesota's only Level Five maximum security prison. The facility is located near the cities of Bayport and Stillwater. The facility is designed and employed with trained security officers to handle not only Minnesota's high-risk inmates but other states' as well. They also have the largest contract to house federal inmates with serious, violent histories. This contract has brought the state millions of dollars over the years. Oak Park Heights is considered to be one of the safest prisons in the United States. The prison has never had an escape, and only one homicide.

Woodbourne Correctional Facility is a medium security men's prison operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in Woodbourne, New York of Sullivan County. It is located on the same tract of land as maximum security Sullivan Correctional Facility.
Collins Correctional Facility is a medium security prison in Collins, New York in the United States. The prison is located in the south part of Erie County in the Town of Collins. It is adjacent to the Gowanda Correctional Facility, another medium-security prison. Both prisons are located north of the Village of Gowanda, at the southern end of Erie County.

Marcy Correctional Facility is a medium-security state prison for males in Marcy, Oneida County, New York. To some extent Marcy specializes in providing alcohol and drug treatment programs. All of Marcy is on one level; there are no stairs, making it especially suitable for disabled prisoners. It also has a higher-than-average number of vocational programs. One building was built with "classrooms" for lessons in how to clean an office and a toilet, lay bricks, repair electrical devices, and the like. It has a full-sized football field surrounded by a track. The biggest room at the prison is the basketball court, also used, with portable chairs and tables, for presentations. The gym has a large waiting area, benches in a room.
Mid-Orange Correctional Facility was a prison closed in 2011. It was located in Orange County, New York. It was an all-male facility, and a medium security prison. The facility is located in the town of Warwick, and is northeast of the village of Warwick on Kings Highway.

The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a 22.5-mile (36.2 km) rail trail and linear park that runs along the former Wallkill Valley Railroad rail corridor in Ulster County, New York. It stretches from Gardiner through New Paltz, Rosendale, and Ulster to the Kingston city line. The trail is separated from the Walden–Wallkill Rail Trail by two state prisons in Shawangunk, though there have been plans to bypass these facilities, and to connect the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail with other regional rail trails. The northern section of the trail forms part of the Empire State Trail.
