The Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration was an event at the Walt Disney World Resort as part of millennium celebrations held around the world. Running from October 1, 1999 to January 1, 2001, [3] the celebration was primarily based at Epcot, with its emphasis on human potential and the possibilities of the future.

Contents

The Celebration spawned many changes for Epcot. In 1999 a large wand was erected next to Spaceship Earth with "2000" written on it. Also, a new fireworks show was created for the World Showcase Lagoon called "IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth.” A parade located in Epcot called "Tapestry of Nations" was also created for the celebration, [4] which would also become the inspiration for the Disney-produced Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show, which promoted the Millennium Celebration. "Celebrate the Future Hand in Hand" was the theme song of the celebration, and was released on the 1999 Walt Disney World official album. The Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration album also contained this song as well as the soundtracks to the fireworks show and the parade. This CD was also available in a slightly different form on the Walt Disney World: Yearlong Millennium Celebration album, a promotional CD available to purchasers of Energizer batteries.

One of the events that took place during the celebration was The Millennium Dreamers global children's summit, [6] sponsored by McDonald's and UNESCO. It was an event that took place during the first week of May 2000. Two thousand children and teenagers selected for their volunteerism and philanthropy in the USA, and others from more than 198 countries around the world, came to Epcot and the other parks for workshops, symposiums, behind-the-scenes tours, and private functions that allowed them to network and learn about different cultures and customs from their peers. Millennium Village

A pavilion in Epcot was constructed and opened on October 1, 1999 specifically for the Millennium Celebration called "Millennium Village.” Millennium Village was a 60,000-square-foot building that contained many exhibits featuring countries that were not represented at the World Showcase, along with exhibits featuring the United Nations/World Bank and an exhibit relating to EXPO 2000. The pavilion closed at the end of the celebration on January 1, 2001. At the completion of the Millennium Celebration, Millennium Village was renamed World ShowPlace Pavilion.

The text on the large "Mickey Wand" constructed next to Spaceship Earth was changed from "2000" to "Epcot" in 2001, and remained in place for many years until late 2007 when it began being dismantled in honor of Epcot's 25th anniversary. [8] In May 2019, the large "Leave a Legacy" structures in front of Spaceship Earth facing the main gate began the process of being moved to a location outside of the main entrance to accommodate an updated Epcot entrance plan, [9] with the west half of the structures being removed in June 2019. [10] Millennium Village was later repurposed as the "World Showplace Pavilion.” IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth was so successful it continued to operate at Epcot as "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" for 20 years, until September 30, 2019. IllumiNations has won several awards in the years since such as 2012's Best Outdoor Night Production Show by The Golden Ticket Awards. [11]

The Millennium Celebration also marked the start to Official Disney Pin Trading in Walt Disney World and Disneyland, with Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris soon following.

The Tapestry of Nations was a parade at the Epcot theme park in Walt Disney World, Florida, United States, that ran around the World Showcase Lagoon from 1999 to 2001, after which it was rethemed as Tapestry of Dreams. The parade had a unity and world peace theme and featured a variety of large puppets and massive rotating drum units with drummers dressed like kings. The puppets were designed by Michael Curry who also designed the puppets for The Lion King on Broadway and a variety of Disney theme park shows. The leader of the parade was the Sage of Time, who was represented as a stilt walker in an elaborate costume featuring alchemy symbols, gold trim on a white robe, a staff, and a headpiece resembling a sun with a face.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is an enclosed roller coaster at Epcot at Walt Disney World, manufactured by Dutch company Vekoma. Based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Guardians of the Galaxy films, the attraction is the first at Walt Disney World to feature characters from the Marvel Universe. Opened on May 27, 2022, it is Epcot's first roller coaster and Disney's first backwards-launched roller coaster. It replaced the Universe of Energy pavilion, which closed on August 13, 2017.

Epcot Forever is a limited-time fireworks show that premiered on October 1, 2019, at Epcot. Epcot Forever served as an interim replacement for IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth until its long-term replacement, Harmonious, premiered in 2021. It took the form of a celebration of Epcot's musical history. The show celebrated the park's 37-year history, featuring fireworks, music, lighting, lasers, and special effects kites set to new arrangements of music originating from some of the park's classic attractions, such as Journey Into Imagination, Spaceship Earth, Soarin', Tapestry of Nations and Universe of Energy. The show was also made to celebrate the past, present, and future of Epcot.

<i>Harmonious</i> (Epcot) Epcot nighttime show, 2021–2023

Harmonious was a multimedia, fireworks-based nighttime spectacular at EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. Intended as the long-term replacement for IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, Harmonious showcased and celebrated the cultures and stories of the world that have inspired various Disney films and music, and how it can unite us all, overcoming any language or border. The show utilized pyrotechnics, choreographed water fountains, water curtains, lasers, searchlights, and LED screens to present a 360° audio-visual experience on the park's World Showcase Lagoon. The primary show equipment was notably housed on a collective of floating barges that were permanently moored at the center of the lagoon. Harmonious was described as the largest nighttime spectacular ever created by Disney Live Entertainment.

The Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show occurred on January 30, 2000, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia as part of Super Bowl XXXIV. It was sponsored by E-Trade and produced by The Walt Disney Company. The show was named after and imitates the Tapestry of Nations, a parade at Epcot amusement park in Florida, and was directed by Gary Paben who directed the original parade. The show was narrated by Mexican-American actor Edward James Olmos and featured performances by singers Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Phil Collins, and Toni Braxton, with additional numbers performed by a choir and a full symphony orchestra conducted by Steven Byess.
