Walter Phillips Abbott (July 6,1887 - April 26,1967) was an American newspaper owner and Democratic politician. He represented the 9th District of the Mississippi State Senate from 1920 to 1924,and was the Mayor of Natchez,Mississippi,from 1952 to 1956.
Walter Phillips Abbott was born on July 6,1887,in Nashville,Tennessee. [1] He later moved to Natchez,Mississippi. [1] He first became involved with the Democratic Party in 1911. [2] In 1919,Abbott was elected to represent the 9th District (Adams County) in the Mississippi State Senate,and served one term from 1920 to 1924. [1] During his term,Abbott served as the Chairman of the Senate's Printing Committee,and he also served on the County Affairs;Fees and Salaries;and Unfinished Business committees. [1] From 1928 to 1932,Abbott served as the County Sheriff of Adams County. [3] He then served as a chancery clerk from 1932 to 1952. [3] In 1949,Abbott organized the Natchez Times newspaper which he ran for nine years. [3]
On December 20,1951,Abbott was elected Mayor of Natchez in a special election to succeed Audley B. Connor who had been appointed county sheriff and tax collector. [4] [5] [3] Abbott's term lasted six months. [5] In 1952,Abbott ran unopposed in an election for a short 18-month term. [4] In May 1954,Abbott ran for re-election and won the Democratic primary,defeating local union president Clyde Mullins. [6] In May 1956,Abbott ran for re-election in the Democratic primary against John Nosser and Troy Watkins. [7] He lost the second primary to Watkins,who succeeded Abbott as mayor on July 2,1956. [8] After losing the election,Abbott announced his retirement from politics. [9] Abbott died on the morning of August 26,1967,in a Natchez hospital. [3]
Abbott was a Presbyterian. [1] Abbott married Mary Clothilde Abbott (who was not related to him) of Natchez,Mississippi,in that city on October 31,1914. [10] [2] They had a son,Walter Phillips Abbott Jr. (August 30,1919 - March 29,1975) [11] [12] ,and three grandchildren at the time of Walter's death. [3]
Rubel Lex Phillips was an American politician and lawyer. He grew up poor in Alcorn County,Mississippi,and graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Hailing from a politically active family and initially a member of the Democratic Party,he served as a circuit court clerk from 1952 to 1956 and chaired the Mississippi Public Service Commission from 1956 to 1958. In 1962 Phillips joined the Republican Party. He ran as a Republican in the 1963 Mississippi gubernatorial election,the first person to do so since 1947. Supporting a platform of racial segregation and opposition to the presidential administration of John F. Kennedy,he lost,garnering only 38 percent of the vote.
The 2008 United States Senate special election in Mississippi was held on November 4,2008. This election was held on the same day of Thad Cochran's re-election bid in the regularly scheduled Class II election. The winner of this special election served the rest of the Senate term,which ended in January 2013. Unlike most Senate elections,this was a non-partisan election in which the candidate who got a majority of the vote won,and if the first-place candidate did not get 50%,a runoff election with the top two candidates would have been held. In the election,no run-off was necessary as Republican nominee and incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Roger Wicker won election to finish the term.
