Seven countries participated in the men's competition, China won the gold medal in the round robin competition, Japan and Singapore finished second and third behind China.

The Philippines participated in the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar; for the 15th straight time in the same number of stagings of the Games. For the fourth time in its Olympic history, China was represented by more female than male athletes.

The water polo tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 20 August at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center in Barra da Tijuca. Twenty teams competed in the tournament. Games that ended in ties in elimination rounds were decided by shootouts, as overtime has been abolished since 2013.

Hossein Nassim Iranian water polo player

Hossein Nassim is an Iranian swimmer. He who was a member of Iran national water polo teams participating in the 1976 Summer Olympics and 1970, 1974, and 1986 Asian Games, and won a gold medal in 1974. Nassim was known for his national records in the backstroke, and his contribution to the Iran men's national water polo team from the early 1970s through the late 1980s. Nassim immigrated to Germany in 1987, and is now a coach and instructor with swim clubs there.

Each team registered 13 players which are ordered by their respective team numbers. Players marked with † were unused throughout the tournament. The women's water polo tournament at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games were held at the National Aquatic Centre, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from 15 to 20 August 2017. The competition will be held in a round-robin format, where the top 3 teams at the end of the competition will win the gold, silver, and bronze medal respectively.

Water polo at the 2018 Asian Games was held at the GBK Aquatic Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia from 16 August to 1 September. Ten countries with 9 men's team and 6 women's team participated in the competition.

Water polo at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games

The water polo competitions at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games took place at the New Clark City Aquatics Center, New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac, Philippines. It was one of four aquatic sports at the Games, along with diving, swimming, and open water swimming. The 2019 Games featured one water polo competition each for men's teams and women's teams.

The women's water polo tournament at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games was held at the New Clark City Aquatics Center, Tarlac, Philippines from 26 November to 1 December 2019. The competition was held in a double round-robin format, where Thailand, winners of the previous two editions, dominated the three-team field en route to the gold medal.
