The water polo team of the Philippines had withdrawn from the Asian Games, but the withdrawal was not properly relayed to the event organizers. Thus, the Philippine water polo team remained in the 10-team roster of the competition.

The women's water polo at the 2014 Asian Games was held in Dream Park Aquatics Center, Incheon, Korea from 20 September to 24 September 2014. China won the round robin competition and the gold medal. Japan, which tied with Kazakhstan in both competition points and their head-to-head match, was awarded the silver medal based on having better head-to-head result against the highest ranked team China.

The women's tournament of water polo at the 2020 Summer Olympics at Tokyo, Japan was played from 24 July to 7 August 2021 at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center. It was the sixth appearance of the women's tournament, which had been held consecutively since 2000 and also was the first time on history that the tournament had 10 teams competing.

The women's water polo tournament at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships was held from 4 to 16 February 2024 in Doha. This was the 17th time that the women's water polo tournament has been played since the first edition in 1986.
