Water polo is one of the most popular sports in Malta, with the level of clubs being quite high. [1]

Maltese Water polo is administered by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, with a respective section dedicated to this sport. [2] Water polo activities are sponsored by Bank of Valletta. [3]

History

Water polo was played in Malta at the turn of the 20th century, and was already a well-contested sport in the 1920s, when Lord Plumer, then Governor of Malta, thought about the possibility of entering a Maltese team in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Eventually Lord Plumer left his post but the Maltese enterprised through the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta, then called Amateur Swimmers Association. [4] This was refused by the Dutch organising them on the grounds that Malta was not a country, and after a legal battle ensued for Malta to be able to accede, Malta entered the 1928 Summer Olympics. [4] It is worth noting that this process also led to the creation of the Malta Olympic Committee. [5]

Veljko Uskoković is a retired Montenegrin water polo player. His club achievements are: European Champion 2000, 4 times Yugoslav Champion 4 times Yugoslav Cup Winner. Member of Yugoslav national water polo team from 1991 to 2002. Team captain from 1996 to 2001. From Played more than 300 games, scored over 400 goals.

Water polo at the Summer Olympics Water polo competition

Water polo has been part of the Summer Olympics program since the second games, in 1900. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction. Italy is the first and only country to win both the men's and women's water polo tournaments.

Aleksandar Ivović is a Montenegrin water polo player. He started his career at PVK Jadran, which is his first senior team to compete for. He was a member of the Montenegro men's national water polo team at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The team reached the semifinals, where they were defeated by Hungary and then lost to Serbia in the bronze medal match. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he was again a member of Montenegro's team, where they lost to Croatia in the semi-final, and then lost to Serbia again in the bronze medal match, this time 11–12. He is considered one of the best defenders of all time and by many the top in his position in the world as he can transform the entire defense of his team.

Andro Bušlje Croatian water polo player

Andro Bušlje is a Croatian water polo player who competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics, 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he was part of the Croatian team that won the gold medal. He is right-handed and plays the center defender position. From 2016 to 2019 he played for Greek powerhouse Olympiacos, with whom he won the 2017–18 LEN Champions League. He started playing water polo at the age of 12, and he made his national team debut in 2005. Bušlje is one of the top defenders in the world.

Felipe Perrone Spanish water polo player

Felipe Perrone Rocha is a Spanish-Brazilian water polo player. He competed for Spain from 2003 until 2013, including in the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics. Afterwards he competed for his birth country in the 2016 Summer Olympics, as Brazil earned its first qualifying spot in 32 years as hosts. He helped Spanish water polo club CN Atlètic-Barceloneta win the LEN Champions League in 2013–14 season. His brother Ricardo Perrone also competed for Spain in water polo.

Sandro Sukno Croatian water polo player

Sandro Sukno is a Croatian former professional water polo player. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed for the Croatia national team in the men's event winning the gold medal. He also won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He last played for VK Jug. He currently works as an assistant coach of the senior men's Croatia national team.

Jennifer Pareja Spanish water polo player

Jennifer Pareja Lisalde is a former Spanish female water polo player who won the gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, being named Most Valuable Player of the event.

Arno Havenga Dutch water polo player

Arno Havenga is a Dutch male former water polo player and current coach. He was a member of the Netherlands men's national water polo team. He competed with the team at the 1996 Summer Olympics and 2000 Summer Olympics. He was also part of the national team at the 2001 Men's European Water Polo Championship and 2003 Men's European Water Polo Championship.

Sliema Aquatic Sports Club is a waterpolo club from Sliema, Malta, playing in the Maltese Waterpolo Premier League. The club was founded in 1912 and is the most successful in Malta, with 31 championships and 25 Knock-out Cups.

Birzebbuga Aquatic Sports Club is a waterpolo club from Birżebbuġa, Malta.

Aurélien Cousin born in France on February 1, 1980, is a Maltese international water polo player, playing for Exiles S.C.

The qualification for the 2020 men's Olympic water polo tournament allocated twelve teams quota spots: the hosts, the top team in the World League, the top two teams in the World Championships, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions, and the three top teams at an Olympic qualifying tournament.

Anikó Gyöngyössy Hungarian water polo player. She's the centre-forward for BVSC-Zugló until 2022. At the 2020 Summer Olympics she competed for the Hungary women's national water polo team in the women's tournament.
