Waves is an annual cultural festival held at BITS, K. K. Birla Goa Campus to celebrate music, dance and art. [1] [2] It is held over a three-day period, usually during late October or early November.
The festival was first held in 2006 [3] with events including dance, drama, literature, comedy, fashion, and music.
Waves has its roots in an intra-college festival organized in 2005. Waves was first organized as an inter-college festival in 2006, which was then a regional cultural festival in Goa. Many colleges from Goa and Mumbai participated in Waves in the subsequent years. In 2008 Waves entered the mainstream with a theme suiting the culture of Goa- "Nirvana". The following year 2009 saw two editions of this festival. Waves 2014 saw an international act, The Worldfest, a Coke Studio performance for the Indie Nite as well as the Sea rock event which had become one of India's biggest semi-professional rock band hunt contests.[ citation needed ]
Comedy houses like All India Bakchod, TVF, Being Indian and others have also performed at Waves.[ citation needed ] Events like Sunburn and Femina Miss India eliminations have been hosted by Waves.[ citation needed ]
Waves celebrated its 10-year anniversary in the year 2016 from 4–6 November with the theme Waves 2016– "Tides of Time". The last theme of Waves 2019 was "En Voyage".[ citation needed ]
The events and competitions at Waves belong to a variety of cultural categories such as Music, Dance, Literary, Quiz, Drama, Fine Arts, Film, and more. Participants showcase their talents and win laurels for their respective colleges. Some of the competitions include Step-Up, Indian Rock, Jukebox, Contention, Moot Court, Nukkad Naatak, Word Games, JAM, "Sizzle" and "Vices Quiz". There are more than 40 competitions in total. [4]
The concept of mini-fests was initiated in 2017 edition of Waves. The competitions and events are grouped into four mini-fests: Florence, the performing arts festival, Beau Vista, the design festival, Carpe Dictum, the literary arts festival, Specials, a line-up of Quiz, Film and Photography events.
Waves also hold elimination rounds of certain competitions outside the campus in various cities. The event "Show Me The Funny", where Stand-up Comedians from all over India compete, held its elimination rounds in various cities including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad for Waves 2016.
These are the biggest competitions in Waves, which attract the maximum crowd. Teams from various colleges all over India participate in these three events. The Big 3 events are:
1) Natyanjali:
Natyanjali is the most popular competition in Waves. It is a group dance competition, including a variety of dance forms. The event is judged by people from dance and choreography academies in India.[ citation needed ]
2) Mr. And Ms. Waves:
This event is the Talent Hunt event of Waves. Participants showcase their varied talents like music, dance, acting, etc. Then in the next round they are asked questions to judge their overall personality and attitude.
In Waves 2019, this event was judged by Raghu Ram from the hit show MTV Roadies.[ citation needed ]
3) FACP:
FACP or Fashion Parade is the Fashion event of Waves. Thematic ramp walks, new concepts and trends of fashion are showcased in this event. The event has been judged by fashion training academies like Fermina in the past editions of Waves.[ citation needed ]

4) Sea rock:
Tagline: Where Music breathes Life.
Sea rock is a national semi-professional band competition and is held in several cities, with eliminations in 12 cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Goa. Sea rock also hosted Kathmandu elims, Nepal in 2018 for the first time as a part of its expansion process. The winners receive cash prizes, scholarships at the music academies and a feature in media publications.[ citation needed ] The top three bands also get to open for the headlining artists on Waves main stage.
A Moot Court Event by the name “Lex Omnia” is another speciality of Waves. Participants from various Law schools all over India participate in this event. In 2015, Waves organized this event in association with NALSAR, Hyderabad, one of India's leading law school.[ citation needed ]
The Specials at Waves encompass a variety of unconventional events and competitions. Previous editions have included paintball, blackjack, poker, donut eating competition, Limca Book of Records attempt, Guinness World Record attempt, Housie, All Night Treasure Hunt and Last Entrepreneur standing, Wallstreet fete, Ratatouille etc.
BITS Goa hosts The Waves Ball, to which couples from all participant colleges are invited. The highlights of the Ball include the elaborate cuisine, a live-band, and a number of couple events and games.[ citation needed ]
Waves Ball at Waves 2015 had a theme "A Midnight in Paris".[ citation needed ]
Waves hosts a number of workshops, including Belly Dancing, Origami, Skate-Boarding, Beat-boxing, Canvas shoe Painting, Latin dance, Pottery etc. Besides the on-fest workshops, Waves organizes a pre-fest Dance Workshop a month before the fest.[ citation needed ]
Waves also organizes adventure events during the three days. Previous editions of Waves had events like Zorb Soccer, Laser tag, Paintball, Bungee Run, Slip soccer and Sumo Wrestling.[ citation needed ]
Waves gained popularity far and wide due to the euphoria and ecstasy it creates in its Professional Nights or Pro-Nites as they are called. Popular national as well as international artists perform every year at Pro Nites. Waves has previously featured the likes of Vishal–Shekhar, Priyanka Chopra, Karsh Kale, Blackstratblues, Kailash Kher, [5] Shafqat Amanat Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, Strings, Indian Ocean, Parikrama (band), Thermal and a Quarter, [6] Pakistani Rock act Raeth (band), Carnatic Rock band Agam (band), Dead Letter Circus, Candice Redding, DJ NYK, DJ Suketu etc.
The Pro-Nites of Waves are divided into 3 Nites, to cater to varied tastes of the audience:
The EDM Nite is usually held on the last night during which an Electronic musician performs. Previous editions of Waves have seen performances by renowned electronic music artists like Tony Junior, Nucleya, Quintino, Marnik, Diego Miranda, Ritviz, etc. This is the biggest musical act of the whole fest and draws the largest crowd.[ citation needed ]
EDM Nite also hosted an official Pre-Sunburn event in previous editions of Waves.
There are usually two to three acts on EDM night, with the opening acts performing initially followed by the main artist.
Indie Nitefeatures performances by Indie Music Artists. In the past the Indie Nite has seen performances by The Local Train, Dead Letter Circus, Blackstratblues, Anand Bhaskar Collective, The Yellow Diary, Indian Ocean and Sifar.[ citation needed ]
Bollywood Nite has performances by Bollywood actors such as Amit Trivedi, Jonita Gandhi Vishal–Shekhar, Kailash Kher, Salim–Sulaiman and Farhan Akhtar.[ citation needed ]

The festival is to be held from the 1–3 November, though national eliminations of different events such as Sea rock, Irshaad, Inverse and SMTF(Show Me The Funny) have already taken place in different cities across the country.

Waves 2018 featured events organized by the various clubs of Music, Dance, Literary, Quiz, Drama, Moot Court and the Fine Arts. This edition of Waves attracted a footfall of over 50,000 with students from 150+ colleges taking part in the events. It was also the first edition of Waves in which a YouTube Conclave was held with YouTube celebrities like Meghna Kaur and YouTube channel Filter Copy sharing a stage.[ citation needed ] The Pro Nites of Waves 2018 saw performances from Farhan Akhtar in the Bollywood Night and Quintino, one of the top 25 DJs in the world performed in the EDM night. The Indie Night saw a performance from music band Anand Bhaskar Collective.[ citation needed ]
A Tale In Two Shades!
Waves 2017 came with a new concept of celebrating the abstract. Photography events like ‘Montage’, ‘Mezzo-tint’, ‘Time Lapse’ and ‘Reverse flash’, ‘Waves Open Quiz’, ’Waves Debate Championship’, ‘Rubik’s Cube Challenge’,’Wallstreet Fete’ occurred.[ citation needed ] Other events like Sea rock, Show Me The Funny also showed continued growth from the last edition of Waves. For the Bollywood night, vishal-shekhar ended the festival.[ citation needed ]
Waves has attracted sponsorship associations from Coke Studio, LinkedIn, Cadbury, Britannia, TATA, ICICI Bank, Idea, Crompton Greaves, Reliance, Bharat Petroleum, Hero, Classmate, Redbull, Dell, LG, Reebok, AIRCEL, State Bank of India and Union Bank, T.I.M.E, Parle, Maruti Suzuki and ToneTag.[ citation needed ]
Waves has associations with some of the academics of the country for the variety of events. Including Indian Idol Academy, True School of Music(TSM), National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Indian Mime academy, Jogesh Mime Academy, Thespo, NALSAR Bangalore, Indian Institute of Photography, Terrence Lewis Academy, Saroj Khan Dance Academy, Shiamak Dawar International Dance Academy, Indian B-Boying Federation, Indian Institute of Art and Design, Style Fiesta, Chalta Hai Comedy and Old Delhi Films.[ citation needed ]
Ragam is South India’s largest Cultural fest hosted by National Institute of Technology, Calicut. Ragam blends a series of fine arts, socio-cultural and literary events, along with a variety of workshops, exhibitions and informal events. The fest attracts thousands of visitors to the campus annually and is one of the most popular cultural fests in India.
Goa Engineering College or Goa College of Engineering is a public college in Goa, India, offering courses in engineering disciplines and affiliated to Goa University. Founded in 1967 and situated at Farmagudi plateau, Ponda, it is the oldest engineering college in Goa, with over 2,200 students.
Festember is a cultural festival organised at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NITT). It is a 4-day event held annually in the third week of September. It was first incepted in 1975 by then students of NITT, and has now evolved to be one of the largest cultural festivals organised by a student community in Southern India. With humble beginnings as a fest with zero rupee budget allocation, it grew rapidly with sponsorships and collaborations. It now boasts an annual participation of more than 15,000 students from over 500 collegiate student communities across India.
Mood Indigo, otherwise known as MoodI or MI, is the cultural and signature festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Mood Indigo was held in over 4,000+ colleges and universities before ending in IIT Bombay.
Spring Fest, known as SF, is the annual social and cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur held during January in the spring semester. The first edition was held in 1960. The 66th edition of Spring Fest will be organized from 24th January to 27th January 2025.
Incident is the annual cultural festival of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal, Karnataka, India. The fest is a four-day-long event held in March in the even semester of the NITK Calendar. The fest brings together students from different colleges all over India, attracting an estimated annual footfall of about 45,000 people, and boasts a number of competitive events, workshops, competitions and performances as well as pro-shows by widely known and popular artists including the likes of Sunidhi Chauhan, Salim–Sulaiman, Amaal Malik, Benny Dayal, the duo of Vishal–Shekhar and Javed Ali among many others.
Rendezvous, known as "The RDV," is the flagship cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Taking place from October 5 to October 8, 2024, this event transcends academia, attracting students from 1200+ colleges and welcoming a staggering 160,000+ attendees. Unmaad is the annual cultural festival presented by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Conducted over a period of three days, Unmaad includes events like dramatics, music performances, dances, quizzes, debates, street plays, professional concerts and fashion show. The event has hosted performances by artists such as Amit Trivedi, Sunidhi Chauhan, Farhan Akhtar, Raghu Dixit, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Zakir Khan, KK, Kailash Kher, Lucky Ali, Strings, Jethro Tull and Indian Ocean.
Pearl is the annual national cultural fest of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. Initially introduced in 2009 as an intra-college festival, a year after the foundation of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad, the fest grew into a national level college cultural fest with participation from more than 50 colleges across India with footfall around 8000. Pearl hosts a variety of cultural events and competitions which include music, dance, literary, photography and quizzing. The fest also hosts talks and pro-shows with celebrities and bands of national and international renown appearing and/or performing during the fest in the 15 years since its inception.
Moksha, the annual cultural festival of Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), started in 2003. It is organised in March. Moksha is a three-day national cultural extravaganza held at NSUT every even semester of the academic year of the college, with the most popular events being Hasya-Kavi Sammelan, FahreChoreography, Fashion show, Pop Show, Rock Show and the Star Night amongst others. It is considered to be one of the biggest cultural fests of Delhi and attracts sponsorships from top corporate houses of India like TCS, Intel and Airtel. The fest is attended by colleges from all over India and has enjoyed the presence of big names from within and across borders, like Edward Maya, KK, Akcent, and Strings, the Pakistani band.
Sunburn Festival is a commercial electronic dance music festival held in India. It was started by entrepreneur Shailendra Singh of Percept Ltd.
Manfest-Varchasva is the annual management and cultural festival organized by Indian Institute of Management Lucknow in the third week of January every year. The three-day festival is the biggest B-school festival in Asia, facilitating interaction among B-school students, faculty and corporates. The festival hosts various management competitions, paper presentations, quizzes, debates, case study analysis and interactive industry-student sessions.
SpringSpree, sometimes written as Spring Spree and popularly known as Spree, is the annual cultural festival of the National Institute of Technology, Warangal. Soon to be in its 29th edition this cultural fest has the distinction of being one among the largest cultural fests of South India. With a footfall of around 10,000 and participation of around 600 colleges and increasing this fest has come a long way from its humble inception in 1978. Spring Spree today has an impressive array of events to cater to every possible personality. It covers every possible genre in music, dance, literature, art and gaming. Also an important part of this fest today are the workshops on subjects ranging from ethical hacking to the basics of a guitar. Also this fest has stepped up with time to include the celebs of the day. Some of the prominent personalities who have visited the campus during this very fest are Suraj Jagan, Suchitra, Sobhita Dhulipala, KK, Shobha Naidu, Baiju Dharmajan, Naresh Iyer and Stephen Devassy. The themes of Spring Spree have ranged from Renaissance, Rubaroo India, Carnival, Fantasia and World Fest for the year 2015.
Alma Fiesta is the annual socio-cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Technology in Bhubaneswar. It is a three-day-long event usually held during the second week of January every year. The first edition of Alma Fiesta took place in 2010. It was inaugurated by Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha.
Kashiyatra, also known as KY, is the annual socio-cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. It is a four-day long mega event held in January every year, and is one of the most prominent college festivals in India. Kashiyatra is one of the largest socio-culture festivals in Asia where 360+ colleges/universities take part.
The Mithibai College of Arts, Chauhan Institute of Science & Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce and Economics is a college affiliated to the University of Mumbai offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce. The college was established in 1961 in Vile Parle, Mumbai by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal. In 2018 it was granted autonomous status by UGC.
Karavaan is the annual socio-cultural science fest of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. The name stems from the notion of all IISERs moving forward as one. The fest attracts students from colleges all across Pune, as well as national institutes all over India. It is a 3-day fest, held either in October or November in the Fall semester every year.
Birla Institute of Technology, Off Campus Jaipur is an educational centre offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. It functions under the academic guidance of the parent university Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi in terms of the academic curriculum, calendar as well as the semester examinations.
Highway 69 is an Indian heavy metal band. The band was formed in 2012 in Ranchi by vocalist Tarang Kerketta and guitarist Alvin Rozario, and has been based in Ranchi ever since its formation. The band has been the winners of numerous battle of band titles across their country and is known for their fast tempos, instrumental and aggressive style of playing. The band has performed twice as the finalists at Hornbill International Rock Contest of Hornbill Festival in Nagaland for the year 2017 and 2018. Their drummer has also bagged the title of the 'Best Drummer' in the year 2017 at this festival and was felicitated by Uday Benegal from the Indus Creed which is a band considered to be the pioneers of the Indian rock music.
Oasis is the annual cultural festival of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Started back in 1971, it is one of the oldest cultural festivals in India. It is usually held towards the end of October every year. Events are organized for a continuous duration of 96 hours and are completely managed by the student body. It hosts a variety of events in various categories like Dance, Drama, Literature, Comedy, Fashion and Music. The festival is organized with a different theme every year. In 2022, the festival will observe golden jubilee and the official theme selected is Chapter 50: Demesne of The Lost Gold.
