Wayne Thomson is a Canadian politician who served as the mayor of Niagara Falls from 1978 to 1983 and from 1991 to 2003. [1] [2]
In 1983,Thomson resigned as mayor amid controversy over a vacation given as a gift by a Toronto development firm,and a land purchase made by his then-fiancéBonnie Dickson. His fiancébought some land in Niagara Falls from a seller who did not want it to be sold to Marineland. Seven months later,she sold the plot to Marineland. Marineland owner John Holer stated she acted as trustee and was accompanied by Thomson when the arrangements were made. [3]
On September 1,1998,Thomson was attacked in his office by Joe Pietrangelo,a former city worker who was meeting with Thomson to discuss the city's decision to rezone his family property. [4] Pietrangelo drew a metal cane and struck Thomson repeatedly before his assistant was able to intervene. [5] Thomson was left hospitalized and required surgery. [6] Pietrangelo was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. [7] However,in 2008,he was found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. [4]
Thomson was defeated by Ted Salci in the 2003 municipal election. [8] He subsequently ran and won re-election to Niagara Falls City Council as a councillor in the 2010 municipal election. [2] He stepped down in September 2024. [9]
In October 2024,the city of Niagara Falls awarded Thompson the Key to the City. [2]

Elie Walter Martel is a former politician in Ontario,Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1967 to 1987,as a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP). He represented the Sudbury East electoral district from its inception in 1967 until he retired in 1987. During the late 1970s and into the 1980s,he was the Ontario NDP's house leader. He was on the party's labour left-wing and had conflicts with party leadership,including future premier Bob Rae. After he retired from politics,he served on the Ontario government's Environmental Assessment Board as one of its vice chairs. His daughter Shelley Martel took over his Sudbury East seat and continued to serve the people of Sudbury when it became the Nickel Belt electoral district at the end of the 20th century. Between her and her father,the Martels represented Sudbury at Queen's Park for 40 years. Prior to his political career,Martel was a teacher and principal in the Catholic school system in the Sudbury area.

Marineland is a themed zoo and amusement park in Niagara Falls,Ontario,Canada. It is operating on a reduced scale while it is slated for redevelopment. No amusement rides are operating and it is claimed that all land animals have been transferred from the facility,however videos in 2024 showed large numbers of deer and some bears still on site. The park continues to exhibit dolphins and beluga whales.
King's Highway 8,commonly referred to as Highway 8,is a provincially maintained highway in the Canadian province of Ontario. The 159.7-kilometre (99.2 mi) route travels from Highway 21 in Goderich,on the shores of Lake Huron,to Highway 5 in the outskirts of Hamilton near Lake Ontario. Before the 1970s,it continued east through Hamilton and along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment to the American border at the Whirlpool Bridge in Niagara Falls. However,the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) replaced the role of Highway 8 between those two cities,and the highway was subsequently transferred from the province to the newly formed Regional Municipality of Niagara in 1970. In 1998,the remaining portion east of Peters Corners was transferred to the city of Hamilton.
The 1978–79 OMJHL season was the fifth season of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL). The Hamilton Fincups moved to Brantford,Ontario,becoming the Alexanders. Twelve teams each played 68 games. The Peterborough Petes won the J. Ross Robertson Cup,defeating the Niagara Falls Flyers.
Frank Pietrangelo is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. He played 141 games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hartford Whalers between 1987 and 1994. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 1991. After his playing career he became involved in leadership and ownership of the Niagara Falls Canucks of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Mississauga IceDogs relocated to the Gatorade Garden City Complex in downtown St. Catharines after getting approval of the team's sale to Bill Burke by the Board of Governors on June 5,2007. The team was renamed the Niagara IceDogs. The Toronto St. Michael's Majors replaced the IceDogs in the Hershey Centre,renaming themselves,the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. The Kingston Frontenacs moved late-season from the Kingston Memorial Centre to the new K-Rock Centre,which opened on February 22,2008. On the afternoon of February 18,2008,Windsor Spitfires team captain Mickey Renaud died after collapsing at his home,at age 19,of the rare heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The playoffs began March 20,with the Kitchener Rangers winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL champions. The Rangers were also chosen before the start of the season to host the 2008 Memorial Cup tournament.

Gordon Singleton was a Canadian world-record holding track cyclist. In 1982,he became the first Canadian cyclist to win a world championship. He was the first,and only,cyclist in history to simultaneously hold world records in all three of track cycling's sprint races:the 200m,500m and 1000m distances,all in a 24-hour span from October 9–10 in 1980. An Olympic racer,he was deprived of competing in the 1980 Summer Olympics at the peak of his career by Canada's boycott of those games in Moscow. He also competed and won gold medals in the 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games,and the 1979 Puerto Rico Pan Am Games for Canada. At the end of 1986,he was named a Companion of the Order of Canada. In his middle-age,he continued to cycle and took part in Master Series races,getting a bronze medal at the Canadian Nationals for his age group in 2014. He was inducted into the Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame in October 2015 along with some of his teammates from the 1970s and 1980s. His hometown of Niagara Falls,Ontario celebrated him many times over his life,including in 2004,as their best athlete in its first 100 years. After his cycling career was over,he took over his father's automotive parts business in Niagara Falls. In 2023,he was diagnosed with Cancer,and died from the disease in March 2024.
