Welsh pop and rock music is popular music of Wales produced commercially in Wales.

20th century

1960s

Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey dominated Welsh pop in the 60s. Bassey released her debut single, The Banana Boat Song in 1957 and in October 1964 released the James Bond film theme song, Goldfinger. In February 1965, Tom Jones released the hit single, It's Not Unusual, the start of his long career. Meic Stevens established himself in the 60s and the record label Sain was founded in 1969 in Cardiff by Dafydd Iwan and Huw Jones. The record label rapidly became the leading record company of Wales. 1970s

Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey continued their successful careers with Bassey releasing Diamonds Are Forever in 1972 and Jones releasing Daughter Of Darkness, I (Who Have Nothing), She's A Lady. Max Boyce established himself in the 70s and in 1973 he recorded the album Live At Treorchy (rugby club). Meic Stevens released his single Y Brawd Houdini, Edward H. Dafis became a popular rock group and Geraint Jarman's reggae inspired music became popular in Wales. [3]

Meic Stevens Musical artist

Meic Stevens is a Welsh singer-songwriter. Stevens's songs have a mystical, faintly psychedelic flavour, and are mostly sung in his native Welsh language. Still largely unknown outside Wales, he was discovered by DJ Jimmy Savile, who saw him performing in a Manchester folk club in 1965. This led to Stevens recording his first single – with arranger John Paul Jones – for Decca Records that same year, though it sold badly.

Sain, in full – Sain (Recordiau) Cyf. is a Welsh record label, which took part in the Welsh folk revival.

Anweledig

Anweledig are a band from Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales; their style is a mixture of funk, reggae, ska and rock. The band consists of Ceri Cunnington (vocals), Gai Toms (guitar/vocals), Iwan 'Oz' Jones (guitar), Rhys Roberts, Alwyn Evans (drums), Joe Buckley (keyboard), Edwin Humphreys (saxophone), Barri Gwilliam (trumpet) and Arwel Davies (trombone).

Tafwyl

The Tafwyl festival is an annual Welsh-language festival which takes place in Cardiff, Wales. It culminates with a two day open air festival, normally held in Cardiff Castle.

Sŵnami Welsh indie rock band

Sŵnami are a Welsh indie rock group from Dolgellau, north-west Wales, who sing predominantly in Welsh. They won the Welsh Language Album of the Year prize at the 2016 National Eisteddfod of Wales. Their name is a play on the word 'tsunami' and the Welsh word for sound, "Sŵn", to convey the idea of a wave of sound.

<i>Codi / \ Cysgu</i> 2014 studio album by Yws Gwynedd

Codi Cysgu is the debut album of Welsh singer Yws Gwynedd and his band. The album was released 6 years after the last album of Gwynedd's previous band Frizbee who disbanded in 2008. They had achieved some level of success in Wales, having appeared several times on Welsh television and radio. Codi /\Cysgu contains songs written by Yws over a period of 15 years.

The Y Selar Awards are awarded annually for the best Welsh language rock and pop music, by the Welsh language music magazine, Y Selar. The awards ceremony is the only one particularly for Welsh language music.

Welsh Language Music Day Welsh music festival

Welsh Language Music Day is a music festival founded by BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens. Events take place on the day at its base in Cardiff, as well as previously in London, Swansea, and even as far as Brooklyn and Budapest.

Cool Cymru Culture, music and arts era

Cool Cymru was a Welsh cultural movement in music and independent film in the 1990s and 2000s, led by the popularity of bands such as Stereophonics, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia and Super Furry Animals.
