West1996 pt. 2 is the debut studio album by American rapper Lute. It was released on September 29, 2017, by Dreamville Records and Interscope Records. [2] The album serves as the follow up to his first solo mixtape, West1996 (2012). The album features guest appearances from fellow Dreamville duo EarthGang, Cam O'bi, Elevator Jay, GQ Slaughter, and High I'm Ry.
Lute originally intended to release the project as a free mixtape in 2014, but he said that he got a call from rapper J. Cole hours before releasing it, he said, Cole asked him to hold on to it for him, that he wanted to help him get the project into the right hands. [3] Lute eventually signed to Cole's Dreamville imprint in 2015. [3] The album experienced several push backs over the years due to sample clearances and other issues. [3]
Lute spoke on the album within his Still Slummin' documentary, he said:
My album is a accumulation of chapters and events leading up to Dreamville signing me. It’s a window into the last five years of my life…the obstacles, the challenges, the changes. It’s also motivation to not let people or circumstances define who you are. My only competition is the person I was yesterday. I've been patient and very appreciative of this platform and now its time to show what I'm capable of. [4]
On December 8, 2015, Lute's "Still Slummin'" appeared on Dreamville compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers II . [5] The music video for "Still Slummin'" was released on October 17, 2017. [6] On August 25, 2017, Lute released "Juggin'" as the second single, accompanied by a music video on August 28, 2017. [7] On September 21, 2017, Lute revealed the release date of the album on Instagram, [8] and released a mini documentary entitled, Lute: Still Slummin'. [9]
On September 26, 2017, "Premonition" featuring EarthGang and Cam O'bi was released. [10] The music video for "Morning Shift" was uploaded on Vevo soon after the album's release. [11]

Jermaine Lamarr Cole, known professionally as J. Cole, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Born on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cole initially gained recognition as a rapper following the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in early 2007. Intent on further pursuing a musical career, he went on to release two additional mixtapes, The Warm Up (2009) and Friday Night Lights (2010) both to critical acclaim, after signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint in 2009. Cole is regarded as one of the most influential rappers of his generation.
Dreamville Records is an American record label founded by American rapper J. Cole and his manager Ibrahim Hamad. Courtney Shanade Salter, known professionally as Ari Lennox, is an American R&B singer from Washington, D.C. She is the first female artist to be signed to J. Cole's record label, Dreamville Records. She first began gaining recognition after the release of her first EP Pho (2016) on the label. Her debut studio album Shea Butter Baby followed in 2019. Lennox has also been featured on the Dreamville compilation albums Revenge of the Dreamers II (2015), and Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019), the latter of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and earned Lennox a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album.
Luther Nicholson, better known by his stage name Lute, is an American rapper. He is signed to J. Cole's Dreamville Records. He released his first mixtape, West1996, on February 22, 2012. 4 Your Eyez Only World Tour was a concert tour by American recording artist J. Cole, to support his fourth studio album 4 Your Eyez Only (2016). Dreamville artists J.I.D, Ari Lennox and Lute served as opening acts on the first leg of the tour. Rappers Anderson .Paak and Bas served as opening acts on the second leg of the tour, along with J.I.D and Ari Lennox.
